He ex- ressed a strong hope that by another year the in- ates manifested by many — in the city and surrounding country would ripen into healthy results, and be the ineans of cementing the pleas- @nt associations already formed among the mem- bers in a manner to advance the objects and in- terests of the Society to the final benefit of the country at large. He axsured the audience that he could safely promise them at the next exbibi- tion of the Society specimens of their efforts in floriculture and horticulture which would sur- Prise and delight all. During the evening some delightful music from members of the Marine band, led by Prof. Wag- ner, affurded pleasure to all present , silver knife. Tur River —The regatta of yesterday was a lively affair. All of the boats which were adver- tised to enter for the prize cup, started, except the Young America. The boats set out witha very favorable quarter breeze, and pretty nearly together. The Katy Darling capsized twice be- tween the Long-bridge and Alexandria. and fi- nally drifted ashore near the Alexandria coal wharves The Onctas carried away ber mainsail and — below; the Lady y Spanker was sti!l more unfortunate, rting: fer mainsail halyards no less than four mest when the first accident occurred to her the Sam’ Alien was two miles astern and failing off. The Katy Darling having given in, left but four com- itors. only three of whom passed the turnin; noe The Millard Fillmore fell so far behind the others that she gave the race up, and did not make the buoy at all. The 3. Ailen turned the buoy first, was followed by the Spanker, the Onetas being third. ‘The contest for the bome race was a bot and exciting one. The Allen hav- ing sustained no damage to her rigging was in much better sailing condition than either of the other boats. and led off handsomely, the Onetas and Spanker being pretty much equal in speed ‘The Allen arrived at the stake one half mile in advanee of the others, the Onetas followed, and the Spanker came in last. Considerable money changed hands among the beatmen about the Bridge on the result of the race. The wianing boat took the prize (silver cup) and the race was ended ‘The Thomas Coliyer bas been thoroughly re- paired at Hunter's ways, Alexandria, and it is probable she will be launched from there to-day, aud be again placed on the line between the two cities Navy Yaro Matrers —The steamer Fulton in nearly ready fur sea. The Water Witch, which arrived up from New York yesterday, brought ordnance stores for the Yard purposes. ‘The new Machine Suop is now in operation, and presents a lively aspect to the visitor. Seve- ral new steam engines of ponderous dimensions bave been constructed this season for the new shop, and which drive an immense amount of machinery. ‘The two engines which have been erected for the new machine shop are capabie of performing any amount of heavy service. The Engineers and Machinists’ department, now under the management of Captain M. E Bright, in the temporary absence of Chief Eagi- neer Hust, is in a condition to turn out at the shortest notice any kind of work in its line that may be required in the Ordaance a many hands are employed in constructing gun carriages, cus- sion cap making, making sheil boxes, other orduance work Iu the Foundry men are casting shell and buoy anchors. — Darixe Hicuway Rossgxy—On Thursday night, about 10 o’clock, Mc. Mrs. Johanna McKen- ny appeared before his honor te complain of Margaret Nain, whom she charged with appro- riating sundry dry goods. She had missed ‘a eautifat quilted petticoat,” which bad cost her $3, and two linen pocket handkerchiefs, worth thiee tips apiece. Accordingly a warrant was issued and Placed in the ot Officer Harro- ver, who proceeded with the complainant to the house of Margaret, where, after a strict search among the chattels of the poor woman, nothing tar up but two white handkerchiefs, having no mark by which they could be identified. Jo hanna swore stoutly io the property being her own, although unable to identify it by any mark. Jobanna was so ready to swear that his honor ventured to cross question her, when she insin- uated, in true Amazonian style, that she would have her say, and if *‘ his ’onor?? would not listen to her, she would make him. Thisassertion was backed up with flashing eyes and fists clenched in a manner that indicated a decided familiarity with the use of her fives. His honor heard her cae with great good nature, and then ob se that the defendant had a right to be heard through the mouths of witnesses, who the de- fendant averred could prove that she came by the goods honestly. So, the case was laid over until rday, when the defendant appeared, bring- witnesses who testified, the one that she ha: presented the defendant with one of the handker- chiefs, and the other, ayoung lad, that he had found the other article iu an old stable, and had given it to the defendant. So, the case was dis- missed by the Justice, who spoke encouraging words tothe unfortunate Sper who is in very r circumstances, with nothing to recom- eed Ser but her character for honesty. She thanked him, and taking the goods, which were her’s, left the office with a light heart, and we believe a clear couscience. Before Justice Walter —Dorothy Weirth ap- red and made oath that Catharine Waiter had feaken in upon ber premises and disturbed the peace. A printed form, authorizing the arrest of the said Catharine, was speedily placed in the hands of an officer, who as 8) ly brought the culprit up. An investigation elicited the fact that Catharine and Dorothy both lived under one roof, only one lived up stairs and the other below. Mes. Deifil also lives in the sume house, aud her husband had been discharged from a good job of work through the instigutious of Catharine’s “old mau; and the wives somehow got into a wrangle about it all together. Mrs. D . being in bodily fear of Mrs. Walter, fled up to the room of Mrs. Weirth and fastened the door, Mrs Watter followed, and broke down the bar to ner ingress; and then there was a small fight, in whieh Mrs. D. was slightly damaged about the eyes and hair. Mrs. Weirth very properly com- plaiaed to the justice, and hence the arrest and trial. Mrs. Walter was held to bail for her ap- pearance at the next term of tie Criminal Court. Centre Marxet.—This morning the old and new markets were well occupied, and the gang- ‘ways were crowded with purchasers from every section of the city. There is a sufliciency of room for persons to pass through the gangways when they have nothing but their business to attend to, frequently little groups collect, and with their hokes so occupy the space that it js difficult to pass. Correspondence of The Star. Grorcetown, Oct, 3, 1857. The promptitude and manner in which the in- terest is quarter!» met upon the stock debt of our Corporation renders it one among the most de- sirable methods for investing mouey we know of. The safety of the investment is also a matter of ro little moment, and one that should be always taken into consideration by those seeking for a remunerative disposition of their means. There is bev gent hey Possibility of loss ever occurring to those who may purchase it as a permanent in- vestment. Of late it has rarely ever fallen more than a few cents below par, and even when it has we doubt whether the very shrewdest financier in our midst could assign any good reason for such depreciation. We are not aware of a single dollar’s worth being now on the market for sale; if there is, however, we can see no good reason why it should not bring e millas much as any other six percent. stock in the land. In sub- stantiation of what we have before said it may be proper for us to remark that the Clerk of the Cor- poration met every dollar of the last quarter’s in- terest on the first instant in gold and silver. W. H. Tenny, Esq., the efficient clerk of the commissioners of the Pee fund of our Corpo- ration, has furnished us with the following offi- cial statement of the condition of the institution for the quarter ending September, 1857: jeans. puparation 6 per cent. stock + $76.072.66 Redeeming fond, cash. + 11,120.76 Cash in clerk’s bands.. . 76.37 Sum total of assets... Liabilities, circulation. Balance over and above all liabilities. . $33,962.79 There are also other sources of protit to the con- cern, to which the commissioners can look with considerable certainty, which will doubtless in- « ease this amount to over forty thousand. De- _ending upon contingencies, however, they are dot taken juto the calculation. As some persons may not be fully informed of the operations of the sinking fund, it may be well for us to state that our Corporation notes, when issued, are invested in the stock of the Corpora- tion, and, as the interest accrues on that stock, it is invested in other stocks of the Corporation, and the gain to the present time (by the saving of interest) is the above amount $35,952.79. This ii the Conunissiouers of the Sink- kept separate and distinct from any other transactions of the Corporation. ‘The notes were not issued to pay any debts of the Cor- ration, but simply to constitute a sinkins fund for the liquidation of our Corporation debt, and which, itt continues to be as successful as it has done heretofore, it will, in course of time, absorb the entire stock of our Corporation, which bas heretofore been issued, and thus entirely relieve our town of her present debt. For this wise scheme we are indebted to our late esteemed fel- low-citizen, F. Dodge, sr. The following is the resuit of the labors of Uncle George hoemaker) and his assistant, Mr. Clabaugh, Tn the way of flour inspections for the quarter ending Septeinber 30th, 1857: Whole bar- rels, 19,102; half do., 1 5 Boats continue to arrive by canal from Cum- berland with coal.
