ASTORY OF THE +: CONSUELO” ORDER. The Cownt Gerfaut de X——, although by p>sition :nd fortune thrown into the highes circles of Parisian society, had from the en- trance into life, eschewed all its follies. The Count bad serious tastes, was fond of study, and, above all. of music, which he had culti- vated especially. He was both a scientific and and an aristocratic musician. ‘f In pursuit of this art. the Count had gone to Italy. TLe.e be resided for some years. On his return, be was observed to utterly ehanged in character. A other things, masis, which had been his ruling passion, was now his aversion. The sound of the human votes, esprcially, kal an influence over him which appeared almost to produce maduees. Mysterious rumors were circulated with re- galt the adventures in Italy which had pro- juced this change; but to none did the Count Gerfaut confide the real cause, Count Gerfaut had conceived a profound pas- siou in {taly for a Sa i Loins donna, Gina Ostravi, a creature of beauty and genins, whose fume was destined to exceed that of all her predecessors, although as yet confined to Venice, Verona and Padua. Cerfaut loved her mius as much as he loved heraelf; and whea asked her to become his wife, he néver iu- tended that she should quit the @. Gina, however, by some strange caprive, felt offended that her lover should desire her still tocontinue on the stage; she thought he loved her genius better than herself; and so she married—not Gerfaut—but the Prince of P——, and taking possession of her palazzo, left the stage forever. But Gina had loved Gerfaut. She strove to ide even from herself the feelings that would arise in her heart, and not desiring to linger on the past, she began with renewed enthusiasm to take to her art. and expressed in music what sre darod rot whiiper even to herself. All hor — palied on her, the Prince became teful to her—she longed, she pined for a word {com Gerfant. But he was in Paris; he had mever even = to breathe bey nume. At length the Princess de F——’s health gave away, hor outhusiaam for music took the ebaracteristics of a monomania, and beyond all doubt the Princess was insane. To great Parisian physicians was the Princess sent, and her name was for the first time echoed in the Parisian world. Quiet, gentle, silent, the Prineess, aceompa- nied by a companion chosen for that purpose, was soon at the Bois de Boulogne, at the Opera, at the Italiens—beautiful, but so pale that as she listened in wrapt gestasy to the music. it was impossible to believe her other than astatuc. The Princess soon attracted the morbid curiosi- ty of the Parisian world. Gerfaut heard her name. For the first time since bis return from Italy he entered the Opera House. There he beheld her—a pale, beautiful vision of the woman he had so adored. Their eyes met, then a deep blush overspread the neck and shoulders of the Princess, but Gerfaut turned away without a word or a sigh. He sought the = sician who was to effect this wonderous cure. What would save her? Noth- ing but a retarn to the emotions of the stage. There alone could the pent-up passions find vent Gerfaut, calm and firm, it the Prince ; he told him how he had loved Gina—he told him how they had separated—he told him that she must be saved ; though he swore to him that he would never see her more. “Save her,”’ said the Prince; “TI will trust you, but on a public stage the Princess de P—— never can appear.” “ Nor ahall aee.”’ In_ the old ancestral hotel of the Faubourg St. Germain Gerfaut set to work; he arranged a theatre, he ougaged a company. an orchestra. and then—for without a public an artist's tri- umph could not be complete—he invited all the elite of the fashionable and musical world. Ginlietta and Romeo—not Bellini’s, but Zin- garelli's tender music, worthy of Shakspeare’s poem—was the opera the Princess was ever singi This was the opera chosea. She was rt - At the first strains of the orchestra an eye brightened, life seemed infused in the statue ; she comprehended where she was; the applause which greeted her as she entercd seemed to give her strength; she sang as mortal never sang befure. Gecfaut listened with de- spair and juve. At length came the last scene. Juliet islaid in the tomb. Stealthily comes Romeo to see her once again; the tom) is opened, and Ro- meoclasps hisarms around her. With ashriek, he starts away, and Juliet falls heavily back into the tomb. The Prince and the guests rush on to the stage, but too late; Gina Juliet lay dead—not in mimic, but in real death—in her tumb. She had never moved nor spoken—no, not to the Prince, nor to those around her; but Gerfuut had reached her first, and being over her, bis lips to hers, had caught the last faint turmurings, and they had said her Jast words on earth—t'amo. Tae Count Gerfaut de X. has entered the order of the monks of La Trap) , at Pesth, and the Prince is raising a magnificent monument to Gina, in warble, that is to be one of the wou- ders of modern sculpture. Two monuments to ber memory—the living man turned to stone for her sake, and the marie endowed with life to bid her live forever A Berrer Seseviation.—The other day a country lad “ drapped’’ into a family grocery in our city, we will not say what one, with a basket on his erm containing a limited amount of print butter. His first question was to as- certain whether the grocer wished to purchase avy butter. Veing answered in the negative, as the keeper had a plentiful supply, he started out, but evom returned again offering it at a sum considerably below the market value, ashe desired wo get home, he said, at an early hour. ‘The butter looked nice, and at the price the grocer thought it a safe operation; & he weut inte it, to the boy’s relief, who quickly de- parted for home. Shortly after the purchase was made a lady customer came in to buy but- ter, and the new lot was presented, whic gave satisfuetion, a3 she left with one of the neat looking prints ou her plate. A few hours, how- ever, had searzely rolled around before the lady returned with the identical primt, though somewhat marred with a table Kaite’ * Dr. —, why, what kind of butter have you sold me’ said she. ‘Butter, madam ?—isn’t it good?” © Good! why it’s full of fur,’ “Pur?” said Mr. ——. the grocer. “Yes: fur,” replied the lady, “‘just take the knife and draw it through it, aad you will see."” Mr. —~, the grocer, did so and lo! sure enough, the biade came out as fall of fine fur as a hare’s back. Indeed, whatever w: the knife was drawn through, across, up or down, it came out of the print as filled with be proacd substance as a new hat-body. course the money wus ‘anded and the batter taken back. But how did the butter become furred? We opine that some thirsty young grimaikin mount- ed the churn to drink from its contents, lost its balance and met a creamy grave. The good furmer’s wife came along, caught hold of the eburn handle. and, in ignorance of her late sad catastrophe, went to work agitating the cream and the departed kitten’s together in one grand set-to of splurges. Of course when the ‘butter had com’’ and the contents of the charn'emp- tiot out, a missing member of the feline family “turned up,” but it would be too great a loss to throw the butter away, and, moreover, the city people would not know about it, amd were used to similar things, hence it eame to town. Do you wonder that the boy was in a hurry to get home” We don’t; and we cam say, sinee the event, “ butter has riz’’ in our: esti- mation —Dubuzue Express. _—_ Oo ty-Paris, it is ssid, is gradually changing, . e make py te aes city.
