aides LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Te.zerarnic Exrtoit—While the whole community of Washington and other cities were in a state of intense anxiety to hear the detail concerning the lost steamer Central Ainerica, on Friday night, about 7 o’clock, owing to the pre- vailing storm, the Southern wi —— operative, cutting off all communicatio! Norfolk.’ From that time up to 10 o'clock there was no improvement in the condition of the line, and the Agent of the Associated Press, and the operators themselves gave up all hopes of receiv- ing anything fartherthat night. About l0o’clock a faint signal was heard from Petersburg, in reply to an inquiry, stating that the Norfolk line had closed after waiting an hour beyond the vegular closing hour, by the person employed ia the Norfold Associated Press office. Finding that thix resource had failed to bring intelligence, it occurred to the agent of the Asso ciated Press that if the lines were Ssh south of Petersburg, information might be obtained from Savannah, where five of the passengers of the ill-fated steamer had arrived. An order to hold open the lines from Washington to Savan- nah was immediately transmitted, and the agents of the Associated Press at Savannah and Augusta were notified to be at their posts. In half an hour after this order had been transmitted, the state- ments of H. H. Childs, one of the resc aS sengers, began to be received. From this time until L o’clock the news came over the wires ina perfect rush, and at naif t 12 o'clock the last of one thousand words had been received, having been relayed (or re-written) at Augusta, Peters- burg and Washington, and from here transmitted to New York, Baltimore and Philadelphia, in time for the mornin, rs. Considering the a) sate state of the weath- er, the flashes of lightning over the wires, indi- cated by frequent shocks of the instruments, thi is considered one of the greatest feats ever formed on circuits of equal length. Too praise cannot be awarded to the operations in the different offices, and pagar 4 those of the Washington offices, who would have willingly stayed at their posts all night to have assisted in furnishing any details of the dreadfal disaster. Tue River.—The bird season comes on apace; the duck guns are abundant, and the sporting men begin to tell long stories about last year’s gunning exploits. This morning a beautiful fat | sai was picked up at the west end of the Ly ridge, which had destroyed itself by fly against the telegraph wire. The birds are said to be very fine Indeed this year, having had ex- cellent feeding along the banks of the Potomac, and as they abound very plentifully, the gunners will have fine sport. The schooner Wm. Capes arrived up at the Long Bridge this morning with a party of Sev- enth-warders from a down-the-river fishing e: cursion. They went down with large expecta- tions of having @ fine time among the fish and oysters, but the weather p: inauspicious and their provisions giving out, they had but a sorry time of it. When they arrived at the wharf their appearance indicated anything bot that of men who had just arrived flushed with victory, and swelled out with fishy feastings. Our stout friend, Col. » who wes of the party, whom we saw shortly after the arrival of the “Capers,” was making tracks for home with a fishing :cd in one hand a pillow in the other; when hailed by the news reporter, made no ‘wer, but pu his hat down over his face, accelerated his pace from a fast pace to a chronic run, and disappear- ed round a corner grocery. We wish our friends better luck the next time they go in pursuit of pleasure. Arrived—at Galt & Young’s wharf, schooner R.V. Holly, Travis, from Philadelphia, with coal to Maggy & Bro.; at Riley's wha: f, schooner Wm. H. Pyne, Shreeves, fiom St. Ge with wood for Riley; at Magruder & $ schooners John Walker, Farren.and J.W. Than, Cariler, from Philadelphia, with coal for Magru- der & Stone, and schooner Adam Clark, Beau- champ, from Whire Point, with gravel for Gov- ernment works. Tbe steamer Columbia arrived this morning, from Baltimore. with merchandise for R. Wim- satt, Fox & Vanhook, Barbour & Semmes, B. J. Neale, P. Fegan, Bosse & Bro., P. Thyson, E. FE White & Co., P.O. Walker. ama’s, Patno & Nourse.—The Alexandria Gazette of Saturday last, contained the following brief state- ment concerning the affairs of this house, which is of special interest to our host of suffering Dis- trictreaders. Weneed hardly add that it is not of the satisfactory character they have a right to expect. Already parties are in the market seek- ing to buy up claims against the house, and it is due to the depositors that they should be at least Protected against losses by disposing of their claims at less than their real value, by and through the prompt publication of a detailed statement of the assets and liabilities of the concern. The following is the Gazette’s statement referred to above “Mr. Pairo. of the firm of Pairo & Nourse, states the estimate of their liabilties at $200,000. They have no other creditors but the depositors. Their property of every description, has been | seg in the hands of their trustee, who is pay- ng sums of fifty dollars and under. Their de- termination is to call in their funds ax speedily as possible ; when $20,000 is obtained. a pro rata distribution will be made to the creditors, and the same plan will be observed until all are paid Mr. Pairo gives solemn assurances that at a fair valuation, they bave sufflcieut property to pay every claim, and leave a handsome surplus. He asserts, too, that a portion of their property could not be disposed of inmediately without sacrifice, and consequent loss to creditors.”” Report ov Deatus —The following is the re- port of deaths for the month of August, 1957, by which it will be seen that the total number of deaths was 115, as follows : Apoplexy 2; atrophy 2; disease of the bladder 1; concussion of brain 1; inflammation of brain 1; cerebro spinal congestion 1; cholera in- If; colitis 4; cramp 1; craup 1; dentition 3 d dysentery 11; enteritis 3; 1, bi 7; dropsy |; drowned 1; entero colitis 1, ¢ ilious fever 1; intermittent fever 1; 1; searlet fever 3; typhoid fever 2; disease of heart 3; enlargement of heart 1, hydrocephalus 1; hydro thorax 1; intemperance 1; mania-a-potu 1 marasmos 2; measles 3 miningitis acute 1; old age J; paralysis 1; pertussis 3; pleurisy 1; pueu- monia |; rheumatism 1; stiil-born 1; stomatitis 1; san stroke 1; tabes mesenterica 1; traumatic teta- nus I; not reported 5 Five years and under. from 5 to 10, 6; 10 to 20, 5; 20 to 40, 15; 40 to 60, 17; 60 to 0, 5; over “0, 3; age not reported 4; still-born, 1. Although pistols were fired, stones and clubs used, and several heads were brokén, and it is rumored one person struck with ® pistol shot, the damage to persons was very small. Two young men were arrested by the xuards and taken to the western lock-up. Jus- tice Drury beld them to bail for a further Reavis. It was remarkable that they were the most orderly drunken men ever seen in this city, the only inconvenience to persons on the footwalks being the worm fence tracks they made which rendered it difficult to dodge them. It was suggested that very little fighting whiskey was stored in the warehouses. WE CALL ATTENTION to the advertisement of Mr. Irving, Music teacher, in another column. Correspondence of The Star. Grorcxtown, Sept. 21, 1857. A fire occurred on Saturday evening, about 7 o’cleck, in the large warehouse on the south side of Water street, occupied by Mr. Henry Blunt as a whiskey hag | y establishment. The building, t her with abont 300 barrels of whis- key, a lot of bacon, the whole of Mr. B.’s rectify- ing apparatus, and two valuable outfits for two fishing landings, owned by Mr. James Hecker, was consu: . ‘The fire was purely the result of accident, and caused by the porter, a colored man, accidentally letting a lighted candle fall into @ vat containing an intlammable liguid. The house belongs to BD. & H Claygett, of Wash- ington county, Ma. and was insured in the North American Office, Philadelphia, in the sum of $2,000 or $2,500, which in either case will hardly be sufficient to cover the loss. Mr. Blunt’s loss will reach about $1,000, and that of Mr. Hecker to not less than $+.000, neither of whom were in- sured. Mr. Joseph Waters, who occupies the adjoining warehouse, met with some loss also, as did Mr. J. J. Bogue in the breaking down of an extensive shed by the falling of the east wall of the burning building. The Vigilant fire engine was speedily on the ground, in the possession of the newly-formed company, and worked well, as did also some of the companies from your city. The entire fire department of your city, we believe, was on the ground, and at one time serious apprehensions of a riot were entertained. We were pleased to see, however, that the membership of nearly all the companies gave evidence, by their deportment, of a wish to render us a service, and not to disgrace our streets by those acts of rowdyism which too often oceur—firemen’s fights. Our river wharves this morning present rather a gloomy aspect. We have rarely it ever seen so few arrivals and so little doing along themat this season of the year. At the coal docks there are several large vessels awaiting cargoes. Another steam tug, the “Spy,” made her ap- pearance at our wharves on Saturday. ‘The only arrivals since our last are the schrs. Northumberland, with coal to Myers & Son, and Cleopatra, with lumber to Libbey & Son. The flour market is somewhat unsettled, and prices continue gradually to advance—sinall sales after our report of Saturday closed, at 5.62 for extra canal; some holders are asking $5.75. The wheat market fs also unsettled and advancing— red and white of good qualities are selling at $1.23al.25 for the former. and $1.25a1.35 for the latter. SPEcTATOR. FOR RENT AND SALE.
