a a ot LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. AN AQUARIUM at THE SmitHsoniaN.—The Smithsonian Institution is soon to possess a new and highly interesting feature, viz: a marine aqnarfum, or ax it is sometimes termed, a ‘‘varlor fish pond"? berne a giass case or tank of sait wa- ter, Sou, a collection of murine plants aud animals. The tank has 2 marble floor and glass sides. Upon the floor is deposited a foundation of sand and pebbles, and upon this ix placed rock-work disposed in grottoes and mifiature caverns, where such marine animals as avoid the light € shelter themselves. Points of the rock are owed to project ahove (he water to recommo- the amphibia when they chooce to take an Sea-weed and other marine plants are in miniature forests, and then the sea aving been introdrced, the equarium is ready forits occupents. Not the least intecesting feature of the aquarinm is the manner in whica each department is made to minister to the wants of the others, inan endless circle of good offices. ‘Taking advantazeof the known fect that plantsim- mersed in water and expesed to the action of light throw off gen gas, an Enczlish naturalist by the ame of Watrington tried the experiment of sup- plying exygen to fish ina glass g by the in- troduction of growing plants. This succeeded; but, after a time. green vexetation bezan to accu- mulate on the sides of the vessel, from the decay of the leaves of the plants. ‘To remedy this, Mr. ington placed snails—tirst pond snails, and rwards marine snails, or periwinkles—in the which, feeding greedily on the decaying »le maiter, restored all to a healthy stat and, moreover, produced an abundance of eyys which were devoured eagerly by the fixh, and were apparently their natural food. Thus 2 per- fect equilibrinm wes established: the plants sup- plying the oxygen for the animals, and the latter ‘sto purify the water to make abitable for the plants Within a few yeais the study of m: and animals has grown to be a ma ngland; » from an article inthe New York Evening Poxt, is about to become so in this country. ‘The Post notices some inteiesting experimenting made the late season at one of the leading watering places, by a mere school girl, who was the owLer of an aqua nd whose custom it was to cull from the rocks and sa whatever specimens of anvumat or vevetable life might add to its attract- ss. This ix the oldest volunteer military company in the District of Columbia. It was or- in September, 1536, and the history of its ation is rather peculiar. In the Summer the dir-ctors of the Washington and Bal- timore Railroad Company extended an invitation to the volunteer Cos aes of the city of Balti- more to visit the Federal city. At that time, in the thre es of the District, there was not a single military company.to receive ‘the expected visitors; accordingly, a few patriotic zentlemen, among them John Mills, now at the head of out municipal guard, went around, and, in the space of three weeks, had obtained the signatures of forty-five men toward the formation of anew company. These men were organized under Capt. John A. Blake; Ist Lieut. Richard France, 2d Taeut. Wm. H. Mauvo, and 3d Lieut. John Mills. ‘They were uniformed and accoutered, and made their fist parade on the 12th of September of that year. in just three weeks after the first signature was obtained. Since that time the company has passed throuch many changes of officers but has always maintained its character- istic exerilence as a military company, and {s to- ay, perbaps, the best-drilfed volunteer military nization in the District. They have, since their formation, buried twenty-one members in uniform. Their officers and men ave all of them gentleman of high standing in the commu- nity. On the 10th of September, forty-three years ago— thea in command of the Northwestern army—I was sitting in my tent, a postman rode up with a letter to me; I broke the seal. What do you think that letter coutained? It announced the glorious truth, which will forever be inscribed on the brightest fases of our country’s history: ‘We have met the enemy and they are ours,’ from O1- iver H. Perry. This news spread like lightnin; and sent a thrill throughout the entire army, suc as it is impossible to conceive. Then came the glorious news from Baltimore. This added to the general enthnsiasm and patriotic ardor of the American forces.” Unitep States Hose.—On Friday night, the thorough organization of this new Hose Company was completed by the election of the following ofticers : President—B.
