The following from The Ulster County Gazette of Jan. 4, 1800, gives a brief account of the faneral of Washington : GorGETowN. Dec. 20. _ On Wednesday last the mortal part of Wash- ington, the Father of his Country and the friend of man, was consigned to the tomb with solemn honors and with funeral pomp. A multitude of persons assembled from many miles around at Mount Vernon, the choice abude and lest residence of the illustriousechief There were the groves—the spacious avenues—the beautiful and sublime scenes—the noble man- sions, but slas' the august inhabitant was now no more. That great soul gone. His mortal rt was there, indeed! but, oh, how affecting ' ow awful the spectacte of such worth and greatness, thus to mortal eyes fallen—yes, fall- en! fallen’ In the long and lofty portico, where oft the hero waiked in all bis glory, now lay the shrouded corpse. The countenance, still com- Posed and serene, seemed to express the dignity of the spirit which lately dwelt in that lifeless form. There, those who paid the last sad honors to the benefactor of his country took an impressive and 2 farewell view n the ornament at the head of the coffin was inecribed ‘* Surge ad Judicum’’—about the mid- die of the coffin, “Gloria Deo,”’ and on the silver plate, GEXERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON, Deparied this life on the 14th December, 1799. Et. 68. Between 3 and 4 o'clock the sound of artillery froma vessel in the river firing minute guns awoke afresh our solemn sorrows—the corpse was moved—a band of music. with mournful melody, melted the soul into all the tenderness of woe. The procession was formed. and moved in the following order : Cavalry, infantry and guard, with arms reversed ; music; clergy; the Gen- eral’shorses, with hia saddle, helsters and pis- tols ; Colonels Sims, Ramsay and Payne, pall bearers. The corpes. Colonels (ilpin, Mar- steller and Little, pall bearers; mourners: Masonic brethren ; citizens When the procession bad arrived at the bottom of the elevated lawn, on the hanks of the Poto- mak, where the family vault is placed, the cavalry halted, the infantry marched towards the mount and formed their lines; the clergy, the Masonic brother and the citizens descended to the vault, and the funeral service of the church was performed. The firing was repeated from the veasels in the river, and the sound echoed from the woods and bills around. Three general discharges by the infantry. the eavalry and eleven tapreay of the artillery, which lined the banks of the Potomac back of the vault .paid the last tribute to the entombed com- mander of the armies of the United States and to the departed hero. The sun was now setting, Alas! the Son of Glory was set forever! No! the name of Wash- ington, the American President and General, will triamph over death ! The unclouded bright- ness of his glory will illuminate the future ages. I Severs! hundred men are now engaged in Sponge the grounds of the great Central Park, New York. IJ Some idea of the extent of the Great Wall of China may be gathered from a remark of Dr. Bowring, in a lecture on that country recently de- livered in England. He said that if ail the bricks stone and masonry of Great Britain were gathered together, they would not furnish erials enough for such a wailas the wall of and that if all the materials in the buildings in London were put together, they would not make the towers and turrets that adorn it.
