At the Navy Yard last night, Sergeant McDon- ough, at the Navy Yard gate, learning that two of the men under his command were out on the street intoxicated, started off to look them up and bring them into their quarters. This was near nine o'clock. He proceeded to various drinkin shops in search of them, enquiring if they ha been in either of them. He had just left the tav- ern of Mr. Golden, whither be had been to look for the delinquents, and proceeded afew steps to- wards tne adjoining corner below, where a gang of ten or twelve men and boys were standing, when, as be attempted to pass them, one person stepped out of the crowd and made as if to some him; he sto; and spoke to him, requesting him to aes be wae ca duty, and cond net be interrupted ; be then passed on a few steps farther, when he was struek on the temple by a slung shot in the hands of some one among the crowd and knocked down ; while he was in the act of falling a revolver was fired at him, the ball not taking effect however. The blow which he recefyed was very severe, and rendered the sergeant senneless for some time. He endeavored ineffectually to rise from the ind several times, so much was he disabled y the blow and subsequent falt which he bad received. After a short time, however, he suc- ceeded in staggering as far as the stage office, where he obtained assistance from the stage agent, who took him to bis quarters. This attack on an unarmed man.who was at- tending to his duty, was made without any cause whatever; and the parties who participated in it are being looked after by the police. As the per- son who first arrested the progress of Sergeant McDonough: is well known to him by sight he will nv doubt be identified. Prarie Sctoors.—Yesterday the Trustees of Public Schools were very busy aiding the teach. ers in the various Districts to organize their re- spective schools. The general intelligence we have received to- day s Very gratifying. The scholars were pune- tual and every seat had an occupaut within two minutes after the schoolhouse door was thrown nm. ‘The new school, just organized in the Seventh Ward, received its complement of pupils, 60, as fast as their names could Le registered; and we are informed that more than enough children re- Main to filla new primary school. The anxiety to obtain places in our Public Schools is the best evidence of theerowing pop- niarity of the system, and we look to Congress to put this District on an equality with the States, in material aid, Mr. Evitor: Allow us to call the attention of the officers to those hoya and young men who are in the: habit of attending the different places of worship (especially those of the Methodist de- now jon) for the purpose of interrupting the services Zz the progress of the protracted meetings now being held. We deeply regret that necessity compels us thus publicly to notice the fact that some young men, who should have more t for themselves, if not for the ‘‘ house of are in the habit of congregating here, nightly, for the express pur *, as it seems, of i a disturbance, by behaving ina manner that wonld cause them to be ejected from a show of wild beasts. We haveendared their behavior until forbearance ceases to be a virtue; and, if compelled to notice them again, we will not hesi- tate to give names of all concerned. Such conduct in achurch is outrageous, and a stop should be put to it by the officers of the law. Howarp. Tue Stiri Cire. some time ago, achieved one of the most acceptable (to all concerned) excur- sions of the season, breaking fresh ground ina visit to Leonardtown. DanxorRovs Practicr.—It Is a habit of certain colored cartmen, when returning to their stables in the afternoon, to drive their horses through the streets at a furious rate. There is one offender who drives from the Seventh Ward along Seventh street to the Fourth Ward. at a rate that not only is an injury tothe horse, but ae endangers the lives of women and children while crossing the street. ‘The Corporation law is violated, and some of those who know the offenders should give in: ation to the officers that the laws might be enforced. Firg.—About eleven o’clock last night fire was discovered in the grocery store of Messrs. John- son & Reardon, corner of Seventh and M streets. ‘The house is the property of Mr. Shreeve, and was considerably damaged internally. It will be well for the police to be on the look out hereafter to prevent such displays of capacity towling sinsh in any language, in that usually quietand orderly quarter of the city, at that time of the night. AS WEGO TO PREss there is noticeable about town a movement in the direction of the new (Hunting Park) trotting course, which indicates a large attendance at the inauguration of the course this afternoon. Some fast nags have been entered and good sport may be counted on.
