Pox,—The State Department at Wasbington has*made public a method of treating small pox, proposed by Doctor Landell, of Brazil. which is to dissolve a little vaecine lymph, ‘‘from four to six drops,” in as many ‘‘ounces of cold water, and give to the pa- tient a spoonful every two or three hours.”? “The favorable result of this exhibition is, that it mit- igates the symptoms, modifies the species, and cures the small pox.’ These results are certain- ly all that could be desired of any remedy, and if Proved to be the effect of the alleyed remedy, would entitle it to our most serious and respect- ful, we might say grateful, consideration. But, asthe Boston Courfer observes, it is well known that many of the most virulent animal poisons, euch as that of the aattlesnake, the saliva of rabies, &c., when Introduced into the sto- mach, lose all their poisonous quallties; and may therefore be swallowed with entire impunity They invariably require, in order to be eifective, to be inserted into a wound of the skin, or to be applied to an abraded, or raw surface. This rule, ras we know, is universal, and applies there- fore to the vaccine virus as to any other of the animal poisons. Instead, therefore, of waiting until one has the small pox to try a measure of the Most certain inutility, the Courfer gives the ex- cellent advice to take the only known course to prevent the sibility of an attack, viz.,to be properly and thoroughly vaccinated. It will be of more value in case of exposure than all the di- amonds of Brazil, or the syrups of Pern —Penn- sylvanian — ARTESIAN WELLS iN ILLINo!1s —The follow ing statement relates to Iroquois county, Hl, wi some 30 Artesian wells are in successful operation: *-The water {s cool, and, like the highland water of Pennsylvania, is considered by adistinguished chemist in Chicago to be very — In one instance, in consequence of im- perfect tubing, a well owned by Mr. Harper was rendered entirely useless. It discharged with the water a great quanitty of sand and stones, some of the stones about the size of ahen’segg. It could not be remedied, and in a few weeks several tons of sand, stones and gravel were vomited from the bottom of this water volcano. The ground was noticed to sink and from fear of being engulphed. Mr. H. moved his house some 60 yards ira the old site, The earth all around, for 20 to 30 yards, has supk, leaving a large 1 of water. The well is not entirely useless, but wi!l afford sufi- cient water for ordinary purpose These wells are made ata cost of from @150to $200; and in view of the fact that our water heretofore was im- pure and unhealthy, we feel proud to inform your readers that these wells are a saccess, and we know of several in the southwestern part of the county, the owners of which could not be de- Prived of them for three times their cost.’? I eard some of the most extravagant encomiums of it that ever man listened to. . : In my own practice I always kept it strictly for hu- mors—but since its introduction as a geni family modicine, great and wonderful virtues have been found tn it that I never suspected. Several cases of epileptic fits—a disease which was always cousidered incurable, have been cured by a few bottles. O, whata parey if it will prove effec- tual in all cases of that awful malady—there are but few who have seen more of it than I have. I know of several cases of Dropsy, al! of them aged sople cured by it. For the various diseases of the siver, Sick Headache, Dyspepsia, Asthma, Fever and Ague, Pain in the Side, Diseases of the Spine, and particularly in Diseases of the Kidneys, &o., the coe has done more good than any ne ever own. No pee of diet ever necessary—eat the best you can get and enough of it. Directions for Use.—Aduits one table-spoonful per day—children over ten years dessert-spoonful— children from five to eight years, tea-spoonful. As no directions can be applicabie take sufficient to operate on the bowels twice o day. MANUPACTURED BY DONALD KENNEDY. No. 120 Warren Street, Roxbury, Massachusetts. Agents for Washington.—Chas.
