|] AvrekTewEN TS SHOCLD BE LEFT AT THE Orrice SY wwecre otcoct, N\ OTAERWiew THEY wAT NOT APPEAR LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. BURNING oF rar Nationa, Tueatre.—At about three o'clock yesterday afternoon, the startling cry was raised that the National Theatre was on fire; and in an ineredibly short period of time from the discovery of smoke issuing from the roof, the vast interior of the building was in a bl of wreathed emok attention miles away in the country. The heat, when at its highest, was sufficiently in- tense to be felt as far as Twelfth st. So rar- idly did the flames spread that the wardrobe ‘woman, who was in the building, escaped with difficulty. This woman and two paint boys Were, we hear, the only persons in the build- ing at the time the fire broke out, at which time it made its appearance in the form of smoke and flame, in the upper part of the building, and almost instantly grew to a fall- ing shower of fire upon the stage and floor of the house, from the burning decorations and combustibles aloft. Of course, the firemen, who were promptly on the ground, could do nothing for the theatre. and their exertions were devotel tosaving the Union office and other buildings in fearful proximity to the burning building Fortu- rately the air was calm at the time, otherwise the most strenuons exertions of the firemen and citizens would have been unavailing to te in the confines of the edifice riginated As it was, the Union uffice was on fire several times, and was only taved by prompt and vigilant efforts. The panic spread to ihe neighboring blocks, and as far away as Thirteenth street ple were seen clearing out their valuablesin an- ticipation of a conflagration which should eweep the square. While the flames were ot their height, bursting forth from every aper- ‘ure of the building, and driving back the crowde of spectators to a respectful distance @ melancholy interest was felt in the fate of the two bulletin boards displayed in the niches of the frobt of the house, and upon which the — announced in large that Miss Fanny orant baring recovered from her indisposi- tiov, would appear that night as Rosalind in Shakspeare’s play of “As You Like lt’ The wal's cracked and crumbled with the heat, the wooden entrance and the staircase front were consumed, and yet these frai! bite of wood and psper work remaiced unscathed, but flually, when the building was reduced to a mere shell, they, tov, went the way of all things combustible. The loss to the lessees, Masers. Kunkel, Ford acd Moxley, is estimated «t from ten to fifteen tbensand dollars ; from three to five thousand of this was upon the new ecenery, &2 , for the “Oiympie Devils,’ which has been in re- hearsal for some time, and which was to have been brought cut with great care on Monday night next a this piece she company hoped to make up the loeses of the season, they hay- tng been playing lately at a loss of one hun dred doilare & night. Getz, the artist. lost bis tools, drawings, materials &>., Smith & Vessey the carpenters, their entire ou'fit of tools; J. H. Rosewald the leader of the orchestra, lost a fine violin and much valuable music, including the scores of severa! oper#s Almost the ontire wardrobe and theatrical properties were destroyed. A set of new stage turniture for parlor scenes, costing $500, was saved The lessees had no insurance, and it is be- lieved there was no insurance on the building. We hear that some weeks ego a policy of insurance to the extent of $5,000, was made cut for it in a Philadelphia company, but owing te the non-payment of the premium, the policy was cancelled. The general opinion ccems to be that the fire was the work of au incendiary, and it is said that a person who was turned out from the theatre lately for improper ccnduct made toud threats of burning the building. It is doubtful, however, we learn on inquiry, if this individual hes been in the city some days past. The greatest sympathy is felt in our com- muity for the lessees, and for the company thus thrown out of employment We learn trat an entertainment for tbe benefit of tho company will be given at Odd Fellows’ Hall next week, and have no doubt that such an ene will be substantially beneficial to the eufferers. The Baltimore Clipper of this morning ssys : “The news was brought to Mr Ford, at ‘his house, where he has been confined the past eka by sickness, just as he was about eoucluding a contract with Mr Harrison, of the Pyne and Harrison Troupe, for the leasing cf the Theatre. Mr Harrison, we sre in formed, immediately tendered his gratuitous services to Mr Ford fora benefit stimonial for hia assistance on the occasion of his loss.” The National Theatro, it will be remem- bered, was destroyed by fire on the Sth of March, 1845, the evening after the inaugura- tion of President Polk, and was rebuilt on the advent of Jenny Lind. Tho vocal part was admira- ly sustained by Messrs. Hill and O’Brien The violin solo by Prof Withers, the guitar | gigabits by Mr Keck, and the finte solo 'y Prof. Mamirni, were exquisitely executed. Indeed, the whole performance, vocal, instru- mental and burlesque, was exceedingly well rendered We have never witnessed a larger or mors brilliant audience of ladies and gentlemen in the eastern section of our city; and, thanks to a generous com:ounity, we sre glad to be able to state that the efforts of our esteemed young friends the Harmoneans have been amply rewarded. The handsome amount realized by this charitable undertaking will do much to relieve the distresses of the poor, to dry the tear of the widow and hush the cry of the orphan: and the Harmoneans bave now not only the praises of the public, but, what is boiter, the blessings of Heaven, for their laud- able enterprise in behalf of the desiitate Suspicion or Larcesy.—Yesterday, Mrs Chatain was arrested by watchmen Norwood and Ward upon suspicion of stealing 2170, the property of Harriet V. A resolution in favor of Sam’! Smash passed both Boards also. Mr. English, from the committe of ways and means, reported a resolution establishing the salary of the clerk of the commissioners of the sinking fund _ Mr. Cropiey offered a resolution of instruc- tion to the committee on market house. Both Boards then adjourned. Our city politicians (both parties) are all astir mustering their forces for the coming municipal election. It is generally conceded that the present incumbent of the Mayor’s of- fice, H. Addison, Esq , will again be the can- didate of the opposition or Know Nothing party. and we were informed this morning that R. R Crawford, Esq , was nominated by the Democrats and anti-Know Nothings as their standard bearer. The contest will doubt- less be very warm one Neither will be like- ly to leave anything undone that seems to further their cause.
