See the Weekly Star of to-day—note its va- riety of interesting contents—buy it. read it, send it to your friend in the country ' Suitasoxian Institotren —Rev. Geo W. Bethune, D. D., of New York, lectured at the Institution last night. Subject: ‘The Ora- tor’’ Dr. Bethune is a great favorite with Smitb- sonian audiences, and the appearance of his fase figure, and good-humored, spectacled , Was greeted last night with a hearty round of welcome. Tue lecturer spoke of eloquence as having, ip all history, been trampled down by des potic governments, and as approaching per- fection only in degree as the popular will prevailed. Even in Greece it was confi mainly to detoeratic Athens, and in Rome oratory reached its bighest point when the city was freest A contrast was drawn between the severo practice of the Grecians and Romans in Rhet- oric and Dialectics, and the little attention paid to them at present. No branch of edu- cation is so neglected in this country a3 orato- ry, and it is rarely named as part of a colle- Siate education, and then most slightingly When, in the absence of books, the voice was the sole channel of conimunication be tween mind and mind, and the orator had the monopoly of mental influence, as in the days of Rome and Greece, we cannot wonder at the power he exercised We live in cireum- stances widely different—in the day of the printing press. of books, newspapers, pam- phiets, and fa-ile writers The abuses of the press were amusingly dwelt upon by the lecturer. Yet it was a grand instrument for the world’s regeners- tion, and if potent for evil was 3o much the more potent for good But the power of oratory had not been di- minished, nay it had been magnificd by the press. The orator must teach religion, plead at the bar, discuss meazures of policy, or thrill tye hearts of the community in the cause of charity. The professor. the artist, the phi- josopher, the woman of strong mind and bifur- cated nether integuments, tho New England teacher of psalm singing. the politician, the citizen, all are obliged to avail themselves of the arts of oratory te their purposes. In all times the man of eloquence has been the manof power The military man who eucceeds before the putilic must call the orator to hii , and though the orator may not receive the fesces of power, yet he rules by the eloquence of his statesmanship Great captains, however, have cften exhibited a degree of eloquence. and Cromwell, Washing- ton, Napoleon, Wellington, Jackson and Tay- lor were mentioned as examples. Unlike the general, the administrator, the statesman, the philosopher, the artist, the poet, the historian, the essayist, the orator wust hide his skili from those he impels His faculty lies not in commanding what shall be done, but in leading others to do. He knows that the instant he puts himself he- tween the audience and his theme he fails. The audience cares very little about the speaker, but about the subject, and in that he shrouds himself. The superiority of Demos- thenes over bis Latin rival is that he conceals his art. Cicero never forgets, save in a fow instances, that he is Marcus Tullus Cicero,— when we read after the Roman we see the or- etor—after the Grecian, we feel him. Superficial eri are apt to underrate the power of an orator, because they cannot ap- preciate his effect upon his audience. The orator cannot work by fixed rules, and must vary the style to suit the audience and the oecasivu, and what may etrike the reader of the printed speech as irrelevant. msy have been necessary to lead his hearers up to the point to be impressed—a skirmish for vantage gtound. The proof of his power is that he produces results. An illustration of this kind of criticism was iven in the mathematician who scoffed at lomer because the Iliad ‘‘ proved nothing.”’ The orator takes a firmer hold upon his au- dience than the essayist. [et the speech and the essay be printed side by side, and which will be the most eagerly read? The news boy never cries the essay of the editor, but makes the welkin ring with the announcement of the speech This might not, however, be so true in Wash- ingtop, where so very many speeches are de livered, as elsewhere Those who thus wish to influence the popular mind use the spsech- form in writing. The President in his mes- sages uses thisform The apostles of our re- tigion took not the dogmaticai form of the essay, but the direct one of the epistle There is not a single essay in the whole Book of God He teaches in the form of personal ad- drees. Would that cur preachers would write their sermons more as though they wore to be spoken' The sceret of the superiority of the orator over the essayist is, that the latter does Rot appeal to us personally, but the former singles each of u= out—we are flattered by the et and onr individuality is awak. en! The lecturer addressed the young men pres- ent upon the advantages of being prepared for public speaking upon any emergency Should they not be able to attain the topmost round as orators they can at least acquire the ability to express their thoughts with earnest- wese and effect There is not one of us who 1 not at times conscious of thoughts profitable te others but whch we lack the ability to communicate. There are so many occasions for a man to speak his sentiments befvre the world that the neglect to acquire the ability #0 todo is ost a crime. Eloquence should be studied by the patri- otic that the people may be enlightened and the sophistry of demagogues pulicly exposed It is the duty of well-informed men not to aban- don the management of primary assemblies where national measures are originated, to the management of cffice-seeker3, builies and biackguard: ASSAULTING as Orricer. — Las: night, Officer Yeatman, while attending to his duties in the northern part of the Fourth Ward, was attacked by a young man, and a desperate fight eneued, in which the officer and his op- ponent were both badly beaten. It was re- ported that the man is dangerously injured. Although a number of men were standing around, none of them interfered to prevent serious consequences. The officer reported bimself at the guard house, his face much bruised and his fingers cut. He described his assailant, but could not tell bis name. Since the above was writen, Watchmen Norwood and Birch have arrested the young man, who gave his name as Michsel 0 Salli- van, snd he was committed to jail by Justice Donn, in default of $500 bail, He did not recognize Yeatman as the man he had been fighting witb; buton bis way to jail, enid that JF ing, county consta*le, was tie man he was after, be having had some difficulty with biw, and was determined to have satisfaction Wassixetos Cincus —The entertainments at this establishment to-night are for the ben efitef Mr Jim Myers, the Clown, and posi- tively his last appearance in our city. It was the dying request of the deceased that hie body should be deposited at Greenmount in a quiet unobtrusive manner, and attended only 5 his immediate family. Sroten Goops.—Within a fow duys robbe- ries have been perpetrated in various parts of the District, and the officers have been on the alert to discover where the have been deposited, and to arrest the thieves. Al- though the officers are satisfied that they are on the right track, they have not been able to identify the stolen property. Atreupr to Ssoor.—Officer Reynolds ar- rested a man oa Thursday for an attempt to shoot Howard Brooks. The prisoner wastaken before Justice Hollingshead, who, after hear- ing all the evidence dismissed the case. The affair grew out of the indebtedness of a friend of Lrooks to the prisoner, and upon which sume remarks had been made. She was in collision with the brig Soot- land at the mouth of the ice channel, causing some detention, but no serious damage. The ice remains thick and solid, and hundreds of people lined the steamer’s narrow pathway from the castle to her duck. The foreign papers by the Arabia contain but little additional news Queen Victoria’s accouchment was expected in March Redpeth. the ex-secretary of the Northern English Raitroad Company, who swindled his employers ou: of a million of dollars, was con- victed by the jury, after an absence of only five minutos. His alleged accomplice, Kent, was acquitted. Redpath was sentenced to transportation for life.
