In vearly all yarns or plays in which Yan- kees figure, they are supposed to be *- a lceile tue darn’d ceute’’ for almost any body else, creating a heap of fun, and coming out clean ahead ; but that even Connecticut Yankees -- the cutest and alfiredest ¢zg/¢ critters on the face of the yearth, when money or trade's in question—are ‘dove’? now and then, upon tho most tific principles, we are going to prove. It is generally known in the newspaper world, that two or three Eastern men, a few years ago, started a paper in Philadelphia upon the penny principle, and have since been rewarded as they deserved. They were and are, men of great enterprise anc liberality, as far as their business is concerned, and thereby they got ahead of all competition, and made their pi/e. The proprietors were always ‘fly’ for any new dodge, by which they could keep the lead of things, and mc- nopolize the nows market. The telegraph had not ‘turned up’ in the day of which we write—the maz/s, and now and then, express horse lines, were the media through which Great Excitements! Alarming Events!! The publi:her’s partner wasin New York, fishing for novelties, and he determined to astonish him on his return home, by the hird busivess! A coop was fixed on the top of the ‘> bildin,”’ as the great inventor of the ex- press had suggested; the wagon was bought, and, with two hundred dollars in par funds, handed over to the Pigeon Express man, who in the cour-e of a few days takes the birds into his wagon, to take them out some few miles, throw them up, and the publisher and a con- fidential friend were to be on top of the “ bil- din,” looking out for them They kept looking'—tiey saw something worry like a whale, but a good deal like a first rate bad se//’ The lapse of a few days was quite sufficient to convince the publisher that he had been taken in and done for—reg- ularly peeked xp and done for—upon the most approved and scientific principles. A “Well, what’s the new in New York—got hold of anything rich?”’ was the first interrog- atory mm “H i-s h! close the door,’’ was the reply, indicating something important on the apis. “So, my dear fellow, J’ve got a concern, now, thet will put the sixpenntes to sleep as sound as rocks !”’ “No. What have you started in Guiham ?”’ “Exactly. if you don’t own up the corn that the idea is grand-immense—I'll knock under.” “Good! One paper makes the following criticism _The two stories of Babel that remain are visible on the plain, we are told, at a distance ofsixty miles. By amathematical calculation we have ascertained that an object, to be visible sixty miles away, on the level occean, tnust be two thousand four hundred feet in height. As these two stories are cnly one fourth of the whole height to which the Tower of Babel was carried, it is easy to caloulate, that when the undertaking was broken off, those old builders had carried their tower to a height of nearly two miles! _It is really remarkable that those enterpri- sing sons of Noah should have so got the start of their Maker, before he succeeded in Ping them. It is also alittle remarkable, that when ‘-the earth was yet soaked with the waters of the flood’’—its inhabitants having butlately come out of the ark—that there thould have been population enough to build 80 colossal a structure. Our curiosity is also excited to know by what sort of tackle they contrived to raise their bricks and lime to the enormous height of nearly two miles. _ Oxe Use or Burxpixc —To make minute injections of parts of animal bodies “for sur- gicel or anatomical preparationa,”’ the great art is tormpty the blood vessels thorough- ly.
