EVENING STAR. (© AUTERTIENENTS sa0ULD BE LEFT AT LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Taz Sxow Sroru xp its Errects.—The late great storm undoubtedly deserves to he recorded among the memorable events of 1857. It commenced in a mild, insinuating sort of way, about midnight on Saturday night, and by daylight of Sund2y morning had got a Jetty fall head of s mon. Tothe bostofor Reliet the churches were thinly attended on Sunday. In the evening seme crazy attempts were made to goa asleighing, the ambi- tious youngsters who undertook it speedily concluded it would'nt pay, and returned to their holes. All through Sunday night, the storm continued to rage, piling up the snow, rattling shutters and signs, r) r og down chim- neys, upsetting liberty poles without regard to aapser 8 and politics. twisting the white drifts into a thousand fantastical shapes, and playing the very old Nick generally. On Monday morning “ the face of all nature looked gray,” and the appearance of things about front d-ors and back yards indicated a fall of snow to the astonishing depth of some thirty feet, but a closer survey showed con- siderable inequalities in the surface. In come places the ground was swept bare as a house floor, and again the enow was thrown up in drifts ten, fifteen or twenty feet high, takiog various singular assuming at one time the outline of ainous sweep, and ct another the waves of the ocean, and snon curiously carved like the exterior of an Old World cathedral The roofs of buildings were heavily burdened with drifts which every now and then dropped without warning upon the heads of such people as were with difficulty forcing their passage upon the sidewalks, a14- ing considerably to the inconveniences of locc- motion The citizens of Washington on Monday presented the appearance of a remarkably quiet, domestic, stay-1t-bome people. Coffee and tea were partaken of with wry faces, as the milk mon had concluded to stay at home, with the rest of mankind. The supplies of bread were cut off, tov. as the baker was at home indulging the joys cf the domestic fire- side. Almost all city intercommunication was cut ef ; omnibuees, hacks, and «ther vehicles ne- cessarily suspending operations During tke day an attempt was made by some of the col- ored cart drivers riding their horses in pro- cession to break a track in the streets. but the light snow drifted in again almost immedi- ately, rendering their labors useless On yesterday the wind fell. and the snow was sufficiently got under to allow a retump- tion of city travel, and te-Jay there is high earr--al upon the avenuc, with the myriads of brillient sleighing equipages abroad. INTERRUPTIONS TO TRAVEL. Travel by river or railroad was, of course, suspended by the storm The Sunday evening train from here to Bal- timore at 4 m., proceeded as far as Bla- densburg aad was obliged to turn back, be cause of inability tu force a way through the immense snow drifts. An additional engine was attached, and the two engines arrived with the train at the Relay House a litt'e be- fore midnight, and re the Locust Point janction, about two miles from the Camden Station, about ons o'clock, at which they en- countered a very heavy drift, and could pro- ceed no further. The passengers were made as comfortable as possible, and early Monday morping arrangements were made to send re- lief from Baltimore city. The first attempt, however, was unsuccessful, but finally the efforts of three engines, with snow plows, and an army of laborers with shuvels, opened the track to the stalled train. The engines were literally dug out of the drift, the forward one being comp!stely covered. The train reached Camden Station at 2} o’clock Monday after- noon, having been twenty-two hours on the road. At 44 o’clock, on Monday afternoon, the ex- press train left Baltimore with five camel en- gines (coal burners) and a number of snow plows tor this city, and yesterday morning at 9 o'clock another train with two ¢ arriving bere at 3 o'clock yesterday The 4) p.m train, which left here yester- day, arrived in Baltimore at S o'clock last a tween the Relay House and Baltimore the enow in the cuts is from ten to fifteen feet in depth. cars on this line will to-day, it is ex- fected, be able to resume their regular ran- bing time Latham’s omnibuses came through this morning from Alexandria, and the turnpike is reported to be in good condition. INCIDENTS, RTC A number of stray cattle, caught abioad and houseless by the storm, rendezvoused about the market house, and some drol! acci- dents have happened in consequence. Last night a young man passing through the mar- ket building tound himself suddenly astride of acow lying in the gangway. The frightened animal dashed off with her burden at a break neck pace, treating him to a first rate cow ride, finally throwivg bim upon a pile of now with no bones broken AtthejcornerofSeverths r etandtheaven:e the boys gathered last night, according to time-honored custom, peiting with snowballs all sleigh-riders who failed to duck their headz to the young autocrata of the pave A great deal of amusement was created sesterdsy by the exploits of an amateur bus ter in a‘ yaller’ sleigh Through the top heaviners of the vebicle or the driver, there was 2 perpetual series of up eu! the boys congregated about the establishment in crowds tendering. as usual, a gr deal of imperti nent advice to the unfertunete proprietor The horse was a sensible beast, and after each eatastropbe, stopped composedly in his tracks, while his master picked himself up, shock out bis ruffed feathers and sighted b:s “ yaller ’ sleigh Ai the city post office, crowds were gathered Jesterday afternoon, waiting the serting of the ponderous accumulation of back mails brought by the train which reached here at 3 o'clock, p- m. Maniciots Miscater.—Last night, a num- ber of young men were parcing about the streets at an early bour, throwing ice and epow balis at the windows of various stores and dwellings, and tearing down sign posts Officer Reynolds arrested some of them and took them before Justics Hollingshead, who, after lecturing them, dismissed them on their promise to do better.
