Birra ANNUAL Sxssion or tas Usitep Srargs Aanicuntvran Society.—The exhibit made by Prof. Henry yesterday of the doings of the Sm:thsonian Institute in the Meteorolc- gical Department shows that very satisfactory Tesulta have already been reached. The Institution has published a valuable work upon “The Winds of North America,” by Prof. Coffin, and one upon “The heat and light of the Sun upon different parts of the Earth’s surface,’’ by Prof. Meach Blank tables have been carefully prepared and scattered through the country to be filled up; and rain gauges also had been sent out to those who will guarantee to return the re- sulta of their experiments to the Institution Prof. Henry spoke of the glorious system of observations that might be carried out were Lieut. Maury to take the cea, the Smitheonian Anstitution the eastern portion of North Amer- ica, the War Department the West, and Cane- da and the Hudson Bay Company the North. Prof. Nash, of Muss., offered a resolution, refaced by a handsome littie speech, thank- Be Prof. Henry, and requesting his address in a written form for publication among the transactions of the society; which was adopted. Dr. Newberry, who was geologist to the Government expedition for the railroad sur- vey under the command of Lieutenants Wil- liamson and Abbot in 1855, spoke of the agricultural resources of Oregon and Califor- bia, expressing an opinion unfavorable to the Pacific coast us an agricultural region, with the exception of limited districts such as the Willametie Valley of Oregon and the Sacra- mento Valley of California. A motion to buy Chinese sugar cane seed sufficient to plent one huadred acres of land was rejected, on the ground that experiments of ample extent are now on trial by the Patent Uffice. Prof Nash explained Mr. Brown's (of Phil- adelphia) theory of wool. . ; A resolution on the subject of vine cuttings was then referred to the executive committee. Mr. Jones, of Delaware, presented a report in favor of petitioning Congress to grant each State $500,000 in lands, for the purpoee of es- tablishing agricultural universities. r. Waring, of N. ¥Y , moved and argued in favor of an indefinite postponement of the subject. x. Army, of Kansas, (formerly from Ill ,) opposed the postponement of the measure He thought that elewentary ichools of instruction Were more necessary for the success of agricul- ture than the establishment of universities ; bat he was otherwise in favor of the petition. The subject was passed informally over. The vote rejecting the motion for the pu:- chase of the Cuinese sugar cane seed was re- considered, on motion of Mr Olcott, and the resolution adopted after considerable debate. Mr. Jones, uf Delaware, made a report from a commit ppointed at the last annual meet ing on the general subject of agriculture, with various recommendations; which was adopted Oa motion of Mr. Fraser, of New Jerzey, it was resolved thet the members be requested to make accurate reports to the Society at the next annus! meeting, of all information upon agriculture! experience Dr. Prince, of New York, made some re- ‘TEE Orrice st AY NOT APPEAR marks in favor of the Chinese po o, which he considered of equa! importance with the sugar cene ir Newberry, of the Smithsonian Institute, presented a resolution in favor of geological survey, which was adopted. Printers have a way of their owa of doing up these affirs hand- somely, putting their entertainments quite be- yond the reach of competition in brilliancy, enjoyableness, and all that constitutes a gen eral good time. Consequently their annual festivals are affairs eagerly looked forward to and long remembered afterward. Our information of the programme for to- night is, that the chances for a happy evening are most auspicious, every preparation having been made to that end Among cther fea- tures, Esputa’s Band has been engaged to fill up the intervals of conversation, speech, and soast-makiog, with some choice music.
