The valuation of property has already ep- peared in our columns. hs Great success has attended the erectivn of the new West Market-house, the stalls in which were sold at auction on the Ifth of No- vember, 1855, realizing $2,590—being a hand- some income on the amount of its cost. The improvements on the North Market have had the same effect Both markets are now wel! attended. Plans have been adopted for the erection of anew Centre Market on its present site, which hae a north and south front each of 493 feet, and on Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth streets 275 feet each, having an outer front of over fifteen hundred feet In the First Ward, little bas been done on streets Great pr 3s hns been made on the south Treasury Building extension, the front of which is of granite. In the Second Ward, the principal improve- ment has been the reduction of the grade of the carriage and footway between G and H streets, and the graveling of C street, west of Tenth street. Theold Franklin engine house has been removed, and the angle enclosed by @ neat csct iron railing In the Third Ward. additional underground drainage has been provided, and improrve- ments made on the Northern Market. Considerable grading has | heen done on the grounds attached to the United States hot houses. in the Sixth Ward, the grading of Seventh strest east bas been continued and some of the groucds filled up. Within the Navy Yard great improvements have been mado in addi tional workshops, &c. In the Seventh Ward, very little has been | done on streets, &c. In this Ward is situated the Washington National Monument, on wh hing hes been done within the past ye: and there appears to be b for the present. Enterprising spirited managers are wanting to forward this | great werk. A lofty brick butiding has been | erected on the Mall, to be occupied as an Ar- | mory for the city volunteers and for the de- posite of military trophies. Rails have been iaid from the railroad depot to Maryland ave- nue, and aloug that avenue to Polomac bridge. The railroad from the Virginia side of the Potomac, on the line of the turnpike to Alex- andria, has been completed, and cars have been running on it for some time, carrying daily a large number of passengerz, Xo. poor prospects and public Distressixe Evext.—A most afflicting oe- curence took place about 10 o’clock on Satur- day night, resulting in the death of Mrs. Daniel, wife of Judge Daniel of the Supreme Court. Though a great annoyance, the fly is yet useful in ridding the world of carrion with great rapidity, and thus revented pestilence. The prodigious fecund- hy of the fly was noticed, and the estimate was made that the progeny from a single fly, withfits multiplications, amounted to over two millions yearly. The theory that flies, in their march across a ceiling, back downwards, sustain themselves by the suction of the foot upon the wall, was controverted by the fact that flies walk up the sides of an exhausted receiver with the same facility as the walls of a room. How they sustain themselves upon the wall, is yet in doubt, though it seemed probable that they were enabled to do it by some viscous matter upon the foot.
