B. De Bow, E-q , from which we last had oe- easion to make anextrect. It is fromthe pen | of his predecessor in the Cencus Bureau. If we comprehend the point in controyorsy, it is simpy whether the Census returns forwarded to this city Ly the Census takers and now duly filed among the public a:chives here wore the originals or copics thereof, made by the Consus takers Cirectly from the originals. We con- fess ourself unabie to fathom the importance " Of this question or its practical bearing. We have thrown tho Near’s columns open to Mr Kennedy, because he claims that Mr. DeBow’s statement copied into them virtually does in justice to him. As Mr, DeB. will soon be in Washington, we presume that he will duly | rejein to Mr. h’s publication cf to-day Sevenrn Census —Mr. /iditor: In the Starof yesterday, there appeared an article assuming to he a defence of the manner of taking the Seventh Census, inst resentntations of Mr. liurlbut i | burg Review. We do not suppose that any one of onr readers is 90 stolid a2 not to see that these arguments against the duty make the strongest possible demonstration that it would be jast and proper under such a system which makes commerce the great source of the support of the Govern- ment. “Our theory of Government is, that all men derive an advantage from its protectien. The people have created it for that purpose, and they consent to taxation for the sole end of realizing that object. Every article of taxa- tion, therefore, which is of universa! use, and the consumption of which is a comfort and ad- vantage to all, is, in an especial degree, prop- erly subjected to its proportionate contribution to the support of the Government. The con- trast of this proposition is one that has long | been contended for by the North : that no tax ought to be levied upon any article of com- merce, unless a certain body of their capital- ists can make fortunes out of the exactions of the Government In short, they claim that the taxing power of the Government, exercised in the most odious manner, and to tho ex tremest extent, shall only be made the means of enabling them to exercise a still more ex acting and intolerable power of taxation over the whole peopie. Such is the history and the ethics of the Protective party, and borein is found the secret of the Northern movement in favor of the entire removal of the duties on sugar ’’ Extension —In the Senate Naval Committee room of the Extension will be found a series of six pictures illustrative of our naval history, painted by George R. West of this piace, viz: Battle of the Constitution and Grrriero; Per- ry’s Victory on Lake Erie; Cutting cut of tne Philadelphia in the port of Tripoli by Deca- tur; Violation of the neutrality laws by Great Britain in tho destruction of the Privateer General Armstrong in the port of Fayai; En- gagement of the Bon Homme Richard and Serapis; and the Launch of the Minnesota at the Navy-Yerd. The space allowed the artist for the execu- tion of these pictures is too smal! to do the subjects justice, considering the nature of the paintings and the point from which they are to be viewed ; and the style of the decoration Pcmpeiian) is entirely too gaudy in color to w the fine points of the pictures to be fully appreciated; but in point of Historical Cor- ss, nautical accuracy, position of the ols, details of the rigging, and color and effovt, both naval men and artists criticice them with unstiated praises, indeed. We understand that Mr. West has presented designs tor auother room we hope he wiil be allowed more space and the liberty to rec- ulate the ernamental designs to suit his pic ture India Agent Dodge — Indian Troubles. Several parties had leit Santa Fe to endeavor to ransom him, if possible. He is saii to bee son of Senator Dodge, of Wisconsin. The Political Parson.—For the following pertinent remarks upon that now so prevalent genus of (so-called) ministers of the gospel, we sre indebted to a late number of the Boston Post: The “ political parson’’ said to every Demo- crator national W hig who attended hischurch and paid him for preaching the gospel—* My polities is redigron,, your politics is stv, and therefore it is my duty as a minister of Christ to preach polities in the pulpit, and you are hound, as my parishioner, to sit quietly in church Sunday after Sunday and listen to my denunciations of your principles, your party and your candidate for the presidency, and to pay mo besides for abusing you, because this is my ‘religion,’ and I am an ambassador for Christ. and in bis stead I exhort you to be reconciled to Fremont!’ Not as St. Paul hath it—‘‘now then we are awbassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us, we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.’” Such was the blasphemous perver- sion of the commission of heaven made by the ** political persons.” Presuming upon the just reverence of the people for the pulpit, these political priests pretended not to see themselves as others saw them; the mere portizans of Fremont, and not “the ambassadors for Christ.
