Ose might think that the Ferrers. Fabens, Oaksmiths, et ad omne genus, who have been fussing and tearing about in New Yor’ for the last fortnight to Procure colonists fer their ecooa plantations in Nicaragus were a little out of order in their upper works, and afficted with seme want of duc sensibility in regard to the mora! quality of the act of siaughteriog and robbing by wholesale the good people of Ceutral America. But a bit of reflection on the subject leads to some doubt whether the mental aberration ig not on the other ciile—that of the emigrants whom there men tecruit for the service of Walker. It is tooroughly settled now. by a compari- #on of ai] the iste accounts, that Walker does not hold a foct of ground in Nicaragua except that which bis men stand upon—a narrow line, Pome dozen miles or so in length. frem Virgin Bay ts Juan del Sur. There has coased te be the slightest pretence that Waikeris the Government of Nicaragua. The whole coun- try is in the possession of President Kivas, who was the (tovernment when Father Vijil came here, and who sti!! continues to be the ony Government, er de jure or de fucto, of the Republic of Nicaragua. Walker isa foreign invader, at the head of a few hundred other. foreigners, who de nothing but to slay, burn and destroy, and t render the name of American bateful in ell Spanish America Dusicg the year that Walker bas been en- gaged perpetrating all these outrages in Nica- ragua be bas received between four and five thoucend recruits by means of the several transit sieamers fro n Francieco, New Or- le zd esyecially New York. Of these re- cruits all have lived a life cf poverty, sick- nets, privaticn, ard military slavery without ® parailel in m dern times, and four fifths of them have yerished missrab!y of country fe- Vers. camp fevers, cholera, starvation, military tyranny, and all the other inevitable deficien- cies ard excesses of a mere band of marauders undertaking to carry on a war of cor quest. In the face of all this, hundreds of men are stil found in New York, to sell themselves— no, net cell themselves, but give themselves away—io te the wretched bend-slaves of a merciless master, with the moral certainty of dying in a few months «f starvation and fever, | in the pestileatial jungles of Central America And all these pocr wretches are allured to this fate by the delusive promises of a handful of land speculators, who undertake to grant what they have not got, and cre deluding to their destrvetion the poor men who go to Nic- aragua to teke and at the cost of their own | liver, when they might evuat at will upon the | richest lands and in the mst salubrious cli- | mates of the world, without leaving the United State ' Does not al this render it extremely ques- trocable whether, a‘ter all, Huntington js | more crazy than soxe-ther people in New | York ? | If Huativg on is a wonomaniac of forgery, | are not Weiker’s :e-ruiting agents in New | York moncmniaes of fi ibus ering’ In both | cases, where sia! w> :ank their willing vie- | tim ? Hurlbut has fallen very recently inte very reugh Lanls—into those cf J B De Bow, Esqy., iate the Superintendent of the Census It seems that to make good his false- | of all the returns, : hoods against the South, published in the Edinburgh Aertew, by way cf getting over the proof of their want of foundation embraced in the U.S. Census, this scaly fellow (Hurlbut) must needs tell a falsehocd about Mr. De Bow too. Saying— ‘The Census of the United Stator, prepared in 1850, under the supervisivn of a wall known Southern writer and advocate of slavery, Mr De Bow, rettrn8 the total, etc , etc.” It is commonly stlezed in the United States that the relurns were tampered with to serve a party purpore, ete , etc.” The latter thus disposes of the charge of this | poor devil No one but a blind zealot, or craz fac- tenict, could make such a charge, if he a Occupy but a woment in examing the matter. The reasons of this are obvious enough. Since, i Full copres of aii tho retutns are deposited in mantiseript in tery County and State in the Union. whilst the originals are now filed away in the Department of the In- terior at Washington, whcre they are acvessi- ble at any Moment toovery one. Ofcource, in the Certainty of detection, only a madman. 8 well as a knave, could have undertaken to ““tamper’’ with them, for “ party”’ other “ purposes "’ “Second: From the tery nattre of an offics employing such a jarge number of pers ns, like that of ‘the Census—persons from the North, South, Vast and West—through whoso hands all the voluminous returns must pasa before they can reach the head ef the ofice— persons who make all the condensations and Verifications, and to whom everything dove in the offive taust necessarily be as familiarly known as the alphabet i self. Third : From the fact, easily areertained at Washington, that during the Whole course of my labors upon the Senin and Mortal- ity Reperts, 1 continued at the head of the office tnder me, and responsible to me for its details, a citizen of Pennsylvania, whom 1 bad appointed, who was, 1 believe = Whig; and had never crossed, J thénk, Mason and Dixon’s line, unti! e+ont the time of bis en trance at the Cenzus office. This gentlomin had the general direction of the labors of the clerks ; assigned to each his department; re- etived the reports, and finally handed them overtome. He is still in the office, in charge and the manus ripts which formed the basis of the publications.”’ After thir, Hurlbut will probably pitch on sckie one else when aiming to sustain his false- hoods published abroad against a sect his country, by telling plansitls i—s aboutan individual ReorSacks Exploded. —The Charleston Mercury declares the stories ab:ut crusty to slaves in that city, now and for come time past g published in the New York Evening Post with a great pretence of particularity, are gross fabrications. Charles Fairtax. [- , (Democrat,) formerly of the District of Columbia, is elested clerk of the Supreme Court of California by over eighteen thousand shead ot his highest antag- opist He received more than two thousand votes more than either Congressman on the same ticket Wilder.—We hear that many efforts have been made and rre now being made to induce the President to pardon Wm. H. Wilder, who it will be remembered, is now in the State's prison of Louisiana for forging land warrant papers. Tho plea alleged is his ill-health. | Gur opinion is that he will be left to serve out his term, his caee having been one of the most flagrant known to the history of the Pension bureau. He is well known here, having been among the very fastest men who were in the habit of visiting Washington periodically Resignation of an Army Officer.—The resignation of Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Jo- seph Ht Raton, captain third infantry, has been accepted by the Pregident, to take effect December 31. 1856 Tho Current Operations of the Treasury Department —On Saturday, 27th December, there were of Treasury warrants entsred on the books of the Department— Texas debt warrants...+ressesee For the redemption of Stocks, rthe Treasury Depsrtment For the interior Department For Customs. Tur Aknowswire Hoax.—Another and still more forma! contradiction of the truth of the narrative, *‘ Railways and Revolvers in Geor gia,’ ha: been published. Mr. E. Molyneux, British Consul for the State of Georgia, has tran-mitted to London a letter from RR, Cuyler, President of the Central Railway of Georgia, affirming that the whole eccount, from beginning to end, is a sheer fabrication. Mr. Molyneux, having been on intimate terms with Mr. Cuyler for nearly thirty years knows bim to bea gentleman cf undoubted veracity; and, moreover, from his own «‘krowledge of the excellent management of the railway in question,” he aseerts that such an occurrence as that related in the Times could no more have taken place on the Cen- tral Railroad of Georgia than on the London and Western Railroads. The Times, in a leading article on thie etrange affair, acknowl- edges the corn, and owns up to having been sadiy houxed, and yet, in closing it; article, pathetically calls upon Mr. Arrowsmith to exp!ain what he means by ruch naughty doings Tur Sktx.—No part of our physical organi- zation, says the Boston Traveller, is more worthy of careful attention than the skin.
