EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tae Foss ww rae Fawtny !—Euit Star—Sir: Permit me alight ‘mate. Bs tion, published in your paper of this evening. Mr. Ratoliffe was not elected chief marshal, as there announced. He was only nominxted and declined in favor of Col. Selden. It is due to myself to state that I was not present in this preliminary stage of the proceedings. Coming afterwards the impression made on my mind wasthat Mr. R waselected. I learn since, that impression was wren; As it was stated, however, in the same par- agraph, that “he declined to serve on that Oceasion,’’ I regard it asa matter of no con- sequence whether he had been eleoted, as an- nounced, or not. { see, however, that some writer in your Paper of the same date, over the signature of “A Member of the J.D A.” questions a fact which I consider quite important—that is, the unanimous election of Col. Selden. I regret that a member of the J. D. A. has done this, on his own account; for, unless he comes out Bow, over his own proper name, and states what other candidate opposing Colonel Selden was voted for, and how many votes such op- posing candidate received, he may appear ie the rather unpleasant light of having made an incorrect statement himself. J. N. Canpenrzr. Waseiserox, D.C., Dec 24, 1856. Note.—The gist of the difficulty or question in issue between the contending factions at- tending the meeting of the Association (Jack- son Democratic) on Monday night last, we ap- Prehend to be, whether after it had been de- clared adjourned by the officer (first Vice Presi- dent) occupying the chair, after putting the question on a motion to that effect it could by right be again called toorder without the formal eee notice required by the rules? And, f no such right existed, of what validity are its ings under such circumstances? To the public at large this tremendous Struggle is of no importance whatever. Yet as all the world desire to know just what all the world does, wo have so far opened our columns to this charming little muse. TeausenG’s FareWewt Concert.-Thecon- cert on Wednesday night opened rather in- auspicicusly through some mismanagemert in the matter of seating the people, and in cor- sequence of the house being badly warmed. Thalberg opened with benumbed fingers D’Angri shrugged her ample shoulders, con- tracted her brows, and glanced angrt/y, it- deed, in all directions as if to ascertain from which quarter came the chilling blasts which threatened to ruin her deservedly-to-be-cher- ished voice. Madame De Wilhorst drew her furs about her pretty throat. and perhaps somewhat of the immense pathos with which she sang from J/ Trovatore was attributable to personal discomfort. D’Angri’s wonderful vocalization, even more than Thalberg’s per- fect execution, soon, however, warmed the au- dience into enthusiasm, which reacted upon the performers, and thenceforward the pro- gramme was carried through with bravos and ercores ad /ihitum. This concert was an- nounced as positively the last of Mr. Thalberg in this city, but we trust that he will recon- sider that decision and visit us again at least en bia return from his southern tour. Smoorn Fries ann Levies.—Everybody will he glad to see, by the House proceedings of Wednests.", that there is a prospect of the speedy demolition or abolishment of depre- ciated foreign eoia, and the substitution of our substantial and every way convenient deci- mal coinage. Mr. Phelps repo-ted, with amendments, the Senate bill relative to foreign coinage and the coinage of new cent pieces Mr P explained that the object was the withdrawal from cir- eulation of all depreciated foreign coin, re- ceiving Mexican and Spanish quarter, eighth, an¢ sixteenth of a dollar pieces at twenty, ten, and five cents The Committce of Ways and Means propose that the President shall fix. by Proclamation, the description of the new cent coin. That precedent was set in 1796. Mr. Phelps urged the immediate passage of the bill, but, objection being made, its consid- eration was as epee for two weeks. We trust it will then be ‘* put through” and be- come a law. Frozen to Deata.—This morning, an elder- ty man, decentl7 clad, was found dead uw the ice in Tiber creek, near Pennsylvania avenue. Several persons identified him as P. McHennis, a tailor, who has worked-for sev- eral merchants in this city. It was supposed that he attempted to crores the creek on the ice, but. being intexicated, fell and died where he was found. P 58. Since writing the above we have some additional particulars McEnnis, it appears, was a steady and industrious man; he may have been drinking a little, but the place in which he feil is even dangerous to a man per- fectly sober. ‘The condition of the place near the old depot is a disgrace to the city. The deceased leaves a wife and seven children. Messrs. Wall & Stephens, in whose employ he has been for some time, will have him de- cently interred in Glenwood Cemetery. Sometuine or AN Excitewent was created yesterday on the Avenue, near the Kirkwood House, by a Mllision occurring between a gentleman connected with the Coast Survey and the captain of one of our crack military companies. Captain R. accused the other of writing certain articles in a German paper published in Baltimore, to which he (the cap- tain) took exception, and for which he pro- posed to get satisfaction by the use of a formi- dable looking cowhide which he proceeded to draw from his pocket. The party accused denied the authorship of the articles referred to, and there the affair terminated, to the apparent dissatisfaction of some of the ‘‘fancy”’ who had congregated and probably felicitated themselves upon the prospect of a muss. On Duty.—Yesterday, the auxiliary guard was on duty—balf in the morning and half in the afternoon. This was ordered that the police might have an opportunity of visiting all portions of the city. The central station and the lock-up houses were all opened for the reception of prisone Very little of other misconduct was exhibited stan the day, and tbat as usual by tipsy individuals. Wr aave tefore us a handsomely executed colored lithograph, being an interior view of the famous In ndence Hall, Philadelphia, with all ‘‘its furniture, the cracked bell, table upon which the declaration was signed, with its original green baize covering, por- traits of Jefferson, Franklin, &c., &c. he print can be procured of Mr. Wagner with o- without a frame. Tue River.—The Alexandria Gazette of yesterday says Navigation is entirely sus- pended, the river—above, opposite and for several miles below this place—being frozen across from shore to shore. The steamboat Powhatan, which left Washington on Tuesday morning for Aquia Creek, had not returned last night when our paper was put to press.’ As Iuprovement.—Strangers in future will have but little difficulty in finding the streets running north and south. The numbered streets are designated by tho lamps on the cor- ners at the avenue, and so painted that they can be distinguished by day or night. The lamps are placed at the corncrs from the First to the Fifth Ward. Fixe Ants.—Mr. Vannerson is treating the citizens of Washington to some tiful speci- mens of the art Photographic, inthe way of Da- guerreotypes. Ambrotypes and Photographs, at an exceedingly low rate, and every one ought to avail himself of this opportunity to possess one of his beautiful pictures. We see rear Paiveatce bas opened again at the old stand, under Dexter's Hotel, with books and presents forthe million. Philbrick gives all who call to see him and buy his books their money’s worth and a handsone present. See his advertisement ia our col- umns to day. @ A Coup Bata —Yesterday, a colored boy who was amusing himse!f by ekating on the capa!, broke in near Seventh street ia acd was res:ued with some difficulty. Mrs Florence appeared in parts, songs, and dances innumerable, displaying, in fact, a versatility verging on the miraculous. Ts. Florence and her talented husband take their benefit to-night, and it will unques- tionably be a bumper, as no performers here, within our recollection, have so won upon our play-going public or have more warm personal friends. — Preserve Tas New Yorx Lencer.—Now, at the o ming of the New Year, is a time to begin to save all the numbers of the ‘‘Ledger.’’ The present number is dated January the 3d, and contains the first ehap- ters of Emerson Bennett’s tale of frontier life, ‘* The Refugees: an Indian tale of 1812.” It has also the continuation of ‘ Sarah Percival, or the Bride of the Houseof Gold ”? We would advise you to call on our friend Shillington at once, and make arrangemente for the Ledger for next year. Save it, and you will have a splendid volume. * PARTICULAR ATTENTION of jud, of fine Havana Cigars is called to the “Grabucos”’ from the celebrated factory of Joaquim Ar- guelies, and the Brevas, ‘Queen of the An- tilles,’’ from the factory of Juan B. Romero. These cigars, for fineness of flavor, cannot be excelled in the ccuntry. They can be had only of E. C. Dyer. t _ THE MANAGERS of the agcooiation for the re- lief of the poor of St. Johns’ Church take this method of returning their grateful acknowl- edgments to Mr. Wm. H. Palmer for his kind- ness in providing an excellent and abundant Christmas dinner for the poor children of their parish school. AccibeNt.—Yesterday, a little boy named Roach, aged about fourteen years, had his band badly torn, on L street north, by the bursting of a pistol with which he was amus ing himself. He was taken to the infirmary to be properly treated. CuRISTMAS DAY passed off as it should, with- out disorder, and yet was universally ob. served. The various churches were well filled through the day, and at night many very de- lightful social gatherings took place.
