On the question being taken the bill was passed over the veto. Mr. Houston, from finance committee, re- perted the following resolution: Resolved, That the Corporation Attorney be requested to furnish the Board of Aldermen with such instructions as may enable the Col- lector of Taxes so to form his advertisement as to render valid the sale of property of delin- quent tax a adopted. Council bill for | spp the south fronts of uare Nos. 795, 822, and 846, was passed with an amendment. A joint resolution authorizing the Board of Managers of the Metropolitan Mechanics’ In- stitute to erect a temporary building on Lou- isiana avenue, was passed. The following Council bills were 5 An sct making an appropriation for putting wooden trunks across M street north, between Eighteenth and Nineteenth streets west, and Connecticut avenue and K street north; an act for repairing Twentieth street west, from Pennsylvania avenue and @ and H streets north, between Twentieth and Twenty-first streets west ; and an act making a further ap- propriation for the burial of the deceased out- door poor. Adjourned. Common Counct!.—The Board met at the usual hour. The amendments of the Board of Aldermen to the market bill were non-concurred in. And then the Board adjourned. Ixavevratios Day.—The following is the ‘official’ account of the proceedings of the Jackson Demoeratic Association, held on Mon- day night last: Ata me of the “Jackson Democratic Aszociatior heid on Monday evening, Dec. 22, the following proceedings were had : The President of the Association, Mr. Rat- cliffe, was chosen Chief Marshal for the 4th of March, with power to eppoint thirty-one assistants—one from each State. He having declined to serve on that occa- sion, Col. Wm. Selden was then elected Chief Marshal, with power to increase the number of assistants above mentioned by adding one from each of the wards in the city. A letter from the “ National Democratic Asaociation’’ was handed in by the President, and read by the Secretary. On motion, a committee was appointed to 09 reply. : ba motion, the President was authorised to invite the co-operation of the citizens of Wash- ington, and the members of the difforent clubs in the city, in making arrangements for an in- auguration ball, to be given on the 4th of March next It was then resolved that a copy of the pro- ceedings of this meeting be sent to the Daily Union and Evening St r for publication, and the meeting adjourned. Dasiet Rartcuirrs, President. J. U. Canpenrer, Secretary, pro tem Note.—It seems, according to rumors on the Avenue, that they had a high time of it at this meeting, and that one party claim that no vote whatever was taken — the propo- sition to make Mr. Ratcliffe the marshal on the 4th of March; and, further, that the meeting adjourned without making any such election whatever. On the whole, great shines are cut up in the hall of the Jackson Democratic Association when its rival ae or sies get at loggerbeads over personal ques- Fons st the bendfal of them who stand their meetings regularly sitice the oceasion for their services has passed away don‘t learn to be governed by good temper and by something like respect for parliamentary law and rules of order, the outside barbarian Democratic world of the District of Columbia may be ex- pected in time to question the actual divinity of their right, by prescription, to regulate ell things Democratic for all in these benighted diggings. P. 8.—As we go to press we have the fol- lowing communication : To ths Editor of the Star: The announce- ment made in the Union this morning, that Col. William Selden had been unanimously elected Chief Marshal of the inaugural pro- ceesion on the 4th of March next by the Jack- son Democratic Association, is entirely incor- Teet At an irregular meeting of that Association, held last night, the subject was considered, but no final action taken—it being deemed too important and too national in its character to be disposed of at a small meeting of the Asso- ciation, and as a consequence an adjournment was carried, Mr. T. J. Galt, first Viee Presi- deovt in the chair. After the Association adjourned, and most of the members had dispersed, Mr. Ratcliffe assumed the chair, and with the assistance of about thirty persons who remained in the room, elected Col. Wm. Seiden Chief Marshal of the inaugural procession on the 4th of March next A Msueer ov tuz J.D. A. Wasaisertos, Dec. 23, 1856. Storling exchange is dull. eee ' GEORGETOWN CORRESPONDENCE Ggoreetowy, Dec 24, 1856 Our principal and most fashionable business street (Bridge) gives unmistakable evidences of the approaching Christmas holidays. The quantity and quality of almost every descrip- tion of useful and fancy articles displayed at the windows on either side, is quite unusual ; but at none is the display so rich and tempt- ing as at the following, which may be found advertised in the columns of the Star. The first on the list, east, is the ice cream saloon and confectionery establishment of A. 8S. Arny, who has certainly been taking Jessons under Santa Claus and the Goddess of Epicures ; for surely no man understands better how to cater to the tastes and appetites of all claeses, old and young, than Arny. His supply this sea- son is unusually large, consisting of every species of the most delicious cakes, fruits, ice creams, toys, &c. Ac. On the same side we find Mr H. E. Berry, with acrowded assortment of every description of dry goods that could be’ mentioned, which he is disposing of at first cost. A little farther west we find the book and periodical store of E. K. Lundy, who seems to have taken special pains to procure a supply of just the very sert of books, &o., to suit the bolidaye. And as nothing can be more appro- priate as a Christinas present than a hand- ome book, we wou!d advise our resders to go to Lundy’s and examine for themselves Oa the same side, we meet with Seymour's d fur emporium s suffici-nt to completely captivate perfect curiosity of the kind. Asa manufacturer of ladies’ furs, doubtless Sey- mour has no superior, if equal, in thie country; and as an evidence of the popularity of the cut and finish of his fur goods among the ladies, we wou!d remark that be is daily re vg orders for costly sets from persons re- siding in the surrounding cities, and a few days since he received one for a valuable set from Philadelphia His moderate prices, too, probably has something to do with his great success intrade On the other side of the street is our friend Atz, where we find in rich profusion (cheap) everything in the way of confectionery neces- sary to satisfy the most fastidious; alee, a rare collection of toys, suitable for Christmas pres- ents for children, fine fraits, &c A little west of him we again plunge among the cost y silks and other descriptions of dr; goods of Mr. J. H. Smoot, where prices will be found moderate, and proprietor and clerks gentlemanly and unusually accommodating. The barbor is blocked up tight and fast by ice, and navigation completely closed The steck cf flour in market is unusually light, and sales are now confined entirely to home trade—he!ld at $657. Wheat, from ns, selling at $1 452$1.52, but little g Pork has bec maud from 7 to 37 9 THE HOLIDAYS.
