EVENING STAR, LOCAL INTELLIGENOR. Tas Fase anv Accepted Masons or THE ct or Convwara —Saint John’s Day bh December) is to be one of un- of the District of Columbia, who will meet in the Grand Lodge for the purpose, among others, of —— their newly elected Grand Master, George C. Whiting, Charles F. Frailey, the talented, eloquent and head of the Order here for several years past, who declined a re-elec- tion. A very full representation from the lodges of the District, and a large attendance of Masonic brothers will be drawn —— next Saturday afternoon The proceed: of the past year will be published in ( usual interest to the : pamphlet form as soon as possible after this Saint John’s Day meeting, and will contain a very credit- able the committee on correspond- ence (Whiting, chairman)!; two reports from the committee on the Independent Grand Lodge of Canada (French, chairman); the re- port of the transactions of the Masonic Con- gress at Paris; the brilliant address of the Rev. Doctor Sunderland at the celebration of last Saint John’s Day, besides domestic Ma- sonic matters of exceeding interest ; and the cay of all will be the official address of Grand Master Frailey, delivered at the last annual meeting, which — be = and ractised u; by every Mason and every oe It intindecd, a text book for the Craft. A Perrvugp Breata.—Who would have a disagreeable breath, when, using De La Jour’s Balm of the White Water Lilly asa dentifrice, it can be rendered sweet, and leave the teeth white as alabaster? Put a dropon your tooth-brush and wash the teeth night and morning A Beautsful Complerion may easily be ac- uired by using De La Cour’s Balm of the ‘hate Water Lilly. It will remove tan, pimples, and freckles from the skin, leaving it soft and rosy. Wet a towel, pour on twoor three drops, and whsh the face night and morning. Shaving Made Easy.—Wet your brash and pour on two or three drops of De La Cour’s Balm of the White Water Lilly, rub the beard well, and it will make a beautiful soft lather. Price fifty cents. Forsale by Charles Stott, Washington, and by druggists generally. iuportant to Gas Consumers.—The “ Cir- cular’’ which appeared a few days since in our columns, —— filling of gas me- cers with alcohol or whisky to prevent their freezing, seems to have given rise to cunsider- able involved, which we think it advisable to cor- rect. The rules specified in the Circular refer exclusively to the size of the meter, (which is marked on a brass plate on its front,) and not to the number of lights used inthe house. It is probable that fully three fourths of all the metres used in this city are “three light’’ 5 metres, to fill one of which with whisky would cost Afty cents. —— in regard to the expense Arrestap —Yesterday, officers Williamson and Fanning arrested a man named Jobo Kelly on a charge of stealing a horse, barouche and harness from Richard Cridler. He came from Leesburg with Mr. Cridler, who on his arrival gave the horse and vehicle in cha: of Kelly to take to a liverystable. Kelly sold the horse to Mr. John Kane and the vehicle and harnessto Mr. Jas. Donnelly, and the same night broke into Rainey’s stable to get the horse out in. He was taken to the guard house, and this morning was sent to jail for court, by Justice Birch. Wes WOULD CALL THE ATTENTION of the readers of the Star to our friend Shillington’s large and elegant assortment of Gift Books, Juveniles. Games, Ladies’ Work Boxes and Writing Desks, very handsome bound Bibles and Prayer Books, Card Cases, Gold Pens, Pen Knives, Purses, Backgammon Boards, Fertfolios, and a thousand other different fancy articles, suitable for presents for the holidays By calling early a better selection can be made, and the crowd of the holidays areided. Resaway —Saturday night, when the storm was at the highest, a pair of horses ran down the avenue ata desperate pace, dragging a coach after them and alarming passengers on the street, who, on account of the darkness, were unable to decide which was the <afest road to take. From whence they started or where they stopped we have not been able to learn. It was supposed the driver had left them to seek shelter from the rain, and the horses were taking a bee-line for shelter also. A New Democratic Association. —On Sat- urday night last about one hundred persons met at Temperance Hall to form a ‘‘ National Democratie Association.’ Lucien B Peyton, Esq., was elected its president, and — Sproule, Esq., its secretary. Various appropriate res- olutions were passed, and speeches were made by Mesers. Wagner, Sproule and others, ere they adjourned in hi spirits. Caiminay Court —Saturday, the following cases were disposed of: Christian Krouse, as- sault and battery, acquitted; Wm. Sullivan, assault and battery with intent to kill. guilty of the assault only. . To-day the court wae engaged with the case of Donaldson, charged with an assault and battery on Jacob Shoemaker. Texta Street Beinge.—Ano:herdangerous accident oceurred last night to a gentleman ) cressing Tenth Street bridge, which is in a dilapidated condition. This is the third we have heard of in the last fortnight. Whoever as the charge of the bridge in question is laying the foundation for heavy damages against the Corporation of Washington. Tae River.—The Alexandria Gazette says the river below that city, is nearly free of ice and navigation again open There is a quan- tity of floating ice in the river between that lace and Washington, and the steamboats on cacarday were unable torun. The steamer for Aquia Creek, from Washington, however makes her trips regularly. Beactivcn Piano Fortes.—A musical friend at our elbow suggests a puff for John F. Kilis's Piano Fortes: but we know they require no thing of thekind. They sing their own praises He keeps none but the best, aud has the largest stock we ever saw in any one establishment Really what a handsome present a piano forte would make. Tat two Supers Fuc.-cranp Caiceerine Psaws used by Thalberg and Gottschalk on Sateday night, will, we learn, be left for ssle at ‘he music store of Mr. Richard Davis. We heve seen a testimonial! from Mr. Thalberg, satifying to the superior excellence of these riruments. - Savep —Op Saturday night, two gentlemen icked up @ drunken aad nearly drowned in- dividual from a flooded gutter in the Fourth Ward. He was taken to the guard-house, dried, lectured and dismissed. Farsa ALanu,—Yesterday afternoon, some boys succeeded in creating an alarm of fire; but the Gremen goon discovered the trick, and there was no excitement. To-Morrow we shell publish our Christmas record, affording a complete and convenient guide to our readers in making their holidsy purchases. The weather on Saturday night was suffi- ciently disagreable to turn back ordinary concert-goers. yet Carusi’s saloon was even more closely packed than on the first appear- ance of M. Thalberg in this city. D’Angri, the “superb Ionian,’’ made & dashing debut. A deep-chested plump bru- nette, she attracted attention by her personal appearance as well as by her voice, which isa grand contralto, flexible, sonorous and sympa- thetic. In response to a vigorous encore, she gave in masterly style La Gracia dt Anda- lusta. Thalberg displayed as before, that quiet perfection which never falters and car never exceed itself. His performance of the Rondo “ Cenerentola” by Rossini, was perhaps the best appreciated by his audience, and in an- swer to the enthusiastic encore which follow- ed he gave that delicious morceau, the “ Sere- nade” from Don Pasquale. Gottschalk appeared in the closing piece— the duett from Norma—and with his white teeth, correct figure, dainty mustache, and seductive smile, looked quite a much the lady- killer as ever. The emulous performance of the duet by these masters of the piano seemed to ran- sack and bring out every capability of the in- strument. Thalberg’s quiet telling style of exerting just sufficient power for his purpose stood in marked contrast to the brilliant but florid execution of Gottschalk. On Wednesday evening, Thalberg, D’Angri and Madame De Wilhorst give a grand per- formance at the National Theatre, an arrange- ment which will serve to give the performance & more popular cast, as the size of the house allows a graduated scale of prices. Baavry.—The women of Eastern countries are famous the world over for the texture of their skin and the loveliness of their complex- ion Much of this they owe to the means they take to preserve it and heighten its beauty. For this purpose one standard preparation universally prevaiis—the far-famed Au/liston or Orient Water—sometimes termed. in sig- nificant Eastern language, the “Bath o/ Beauty.” It gives the skin that peculiar softness of texture so greatly admired, and that beautiful, mild g/ow which no art can tmitate. We understand that measures are beiug taken to place the Kalliston abundantly in the American market, it being found pecu- liarly adapted to relieve the effects of our changeable climate—the harsh winds and the burning sun—the severe cold of winter, and the dry, burning atmosphere of summer. Alluding to the pone interment of a distinguished High Church theologian by some of the journals, Bishop Doane writes : “My dear Mr. Editor: Has not the name of Dr. Hussey, Professor of ecclesiastical History at Oxford, been confounded with that of Dr Pusey, Regius Professor of Hebrew? I think so The former, I believe, is dead, the latter, I devoutly trust, is to live many years of hon- ored usefulness.
