Tue Gsoncetows Cottecs CADETS aT THE Warre House —Tho Cadets on the occasion of their late parade in this city visited the ex- ecutive mansion, where they had an interest- ing interview with President Pierce. The Ca- dets having formed in single column in the east room, the captain of the company, Chas. B. Kenney of Pittsburg, Pa, addressed the President in eloquent terms, commencing as follows Mr. President: On the part of the George- town College Cadets and the noble insti ution which they represent bere, in this chamber, the scene of so many exhibitions of American feeling and of American patriotism, hallowed too by the constant presence of America’s no- blest pride, I tender you the assurance of our earnest regard and esteem. My own emotions at this moment, standing in the presence of bim whom from our mother’s knee we are tanght to regard with reverence and awe, would indeed silence my tongue, had I not an honorable, a bigh and sacred duty to perform When an institution which some of the most brilliant scholars in our country, the most pro- found philusophers and st statesmen are proud to call their “ Alma Mater,’ has select- ed even so unworthy a representative of her sentiments, be is at once entitled to your kind attention, he speaks what even the noblest ruler cf men might be proud to hear and to deserve—ihe commendations of the good. You ses here before you hearts young and ardent, glowing with the purest love of their country; congregated, too, from the very ex- trewities of this mighty, indissoluble, Union, a communion of States in the communion of their children, from the frowning forests of Maine to the glittering soil of California, the “Spes Magne Altera Rome,” all in one mind. and with voice testifying their affec- tion for yourself, and their admiration of the manner in which you have discharged tre swful duties of your office. We are not sol- diers by profession; but we find in the exer- cise of the soldier an agreeable nd profita- ble amusement, and to this we are the more incited when we reflect that the brightest, the noblest names that adorn the pages of our country’s history, have beeh alike distin- the field. But A Diary ror Tag Yrar 1857.—For register- ing events, past, present and future; a valu- able ket companion, with almanac and calender; distances from New York to all im- portant places in the country; blank leaves for keeping a diary of every day in the year; cash accounts and bills payable, with neatly printed headin; Don’t be without one of ny usefal little souvenirs. Shillington has them. * Mr. Buonget on CiiuatoLogy.—This gen- tleman gives his second lecture on Climatwlo- gy at Carusi’s Saloon to-night. He bas made the investigation of this subject a speci and has the ability to do it full justice is charts for illustration are attracting great at- tention from scientific gentlemen gathered in this city. Centre Marnet.—The unfavorable state of the weather prevented the attendance of many dealers in the principal market, and the supply was not as plentiful as usual. The new pavement on the east front of the market bas been finished, and the repair of that on the north front is in progress. Sirppery Praces —Ice formed on the side- walks last night, and this morning several aged persons fell upon it while going toor from the market. If citizens would take seasonable precautions to remove ice on the pavements in front of their houses, many serious accidents might be prevented during the winter. Tue Fate of the Ladies of St. Mary’s Church affords a fine opportunity for an evening’s en- tertainment. It is held in Coombs’s building, on Pennsylvania avenue, between Ninth and Tenth streets. Grace Cuaurcn Fair —In planning your evening’s amusement don't forget this most agreeable resort. Tuat was a superb “hop’’ at Munder’s Academy last night. Warca Returns —The register at the Cen- tral station was untouched this morning, not an arrest made; and stranger yet there was not an application for lodging. ————e—__ GEORGETOWN CORRESPONDENCE. 8. guished in the cabinet and i in the names of all those you sec around you, and in the namo of that venerable institution which we love, while we express our high ap- preciation of your conduct as a statesman, we cannot omit the earnest mention of our thanks deep and sincere, for the particular interest you have manifested in the A/ma mater of our choice Alluding gracefully to the eminent public services of the President in piloting the ship of state sucessfully through the furious po- litical temp which lately beset her, he closed as follows : “In the name of our company, then, I thank you for the truly American and cuvnsti- tutional manner in which you have admiais- tered justice to all; I thank you in the name of the Faculty of Georgetown College, who know how to oppreciate worth and pay a will- ing tribute to virtue; I thank you in the name of all the young and glowing hearts you see around you, in which the memory of this day will be fresh as now when you, per- haps, will have been called to a higher and purer reward for your generous and patrictic labors; I thank you in the name of my ua- tive, noble Keystone State, the bulwark of a nation’s safety and her hopes, that has stamped the seal of her approbation upon your public acts with more than two hundred and thirty thousand of her freemen’s votes: I thank you in the name of every true-hearted Amer- ican citizen whe cherishes the union and pros- perity of our common country. And when you will have retired from the glory and cares ef so mighty a Government—when, amid the beauty aud grandeur of nature which make the Granite State tho “‘ Switzoriand”’ of Amer- ica, your untrammeled spirit will find new and purer springs of pleasure and delight— oh! remember still the depth and sincerity of our regard, remember that you have a monu- ment more enduring than brass, more lasting than marble, in the undying, eternal grati- tude of your countrymen.” Upon the conclusion of Mr. Kenny’s re- marks, the President replied, happily and ap- propriately, to the effect that though the Ca- dets represented different sections of country, they were still umited in feeling, that no geo graphical lines could divide the interests and hearts of Americans. No blow could be struck at one section of the country, without injuring the section from which it originated. He complimented the company on their ap- pearance, and referred to the benefits of citi- zen soldiery; of the prodigies of valor per- formed by volunteers on the fields of Mexico, all of which resulted from the habitual use of arm. In concluding, the President spoke in terms of high regard of the institution represented by the Cadets, and of its honored President On leaving the White House, the Cadets proceeded to the Washington Seminary, where they partook of a collation prepared by Gau- tier. Speeches were made and sentiments were offered by Messrz. Choise of S Carolina, O'Flynn of M an, Lancaster of Pa , Hill of Maryland, and Neale of Md. At about half past { the Cadets started from the Seminary on the'r march homeward, de- lighted with their co-oplimentary and hospi- tab'e receptions Tae Cunciit Covat yesterday had before it acase of considerable interest, as involying the legslity of the principle upon which build ing associativuns are for the most part founded. It came up ona prayer fur an injunction to restrain the Potomac Building Association of this city from selling the house of John John- son for a failuce to comply with the regula- tions of said association, ef which he isa mem- ber. The sale is resisted on the ground that the proceedings under which the association dispenses its accommodations are usurious, to which it is replied, on the other band, that the biddiogs are uot of the nature of loans, but are partnership transactions The case is still befure the Court —J/atelligencer Ggoneetown, Dec. 11, 1856, From all that we can leaia, the full opinion of Attorney General Cushing upon the merita of the poll tax and suffrage bill, ie now in the hands of the special committee of the Council to whom the whole subject was referred seyv- eral weeks since, and final action upon the subject will doubtless be taken by the Coun- cils to morrow evening. It is more than likely that an ordinance will be passed providing for the establishment of two or more election precincts, and for submitting the remaining portions of the act of Congress to the voters of the town for their decision at the next gen- eral election The attention of the citizens of the eastern part of our oity is called to the Eastern market of Mr. Donaldson, advertised in another column. It is certainly no ordina- Ty accommodation, but one for which the dwellers in that section should feel under ob- ligations to him for establishing, and on which they should bestow a liberal patronage The weather this morning is gloomy and rainy, and very unfavorable for out-door busi- ness. The cold, however, has considerably moderated, and hopes are entertained that navigation upon the river and canal will con- tinue open for some time to come. Large quantigies of pork arrived by wagons yesterday The yuality, asa general thing, was good, but it is selling pretty high—$6 50a $6.75 Quite a large crowd assembled at the Dum- barton street Methodist church, yesterday, to witness the pleasing ceremony of uniting a happy couple (Mr. G.
