December 6, 1556, Tuesday Nex’, at 1 p. m ,—is the day and hour fixed for again taking up the Whitfield ease. Tho Republicans wore yesterday in a clear minority of three votes absentees four only are Republican party men and eight are set down as being in favor of admitting Gen. W. on Gov. Geary’s certifi- cate. Messrs. Cobb af Georgia, and Mace, both of whom sre imperatively called away from Washington by circumstances beyond their control, have paired off. Three Republi- cans are so sick as to make their attendance almost a matter of impossibility, while we do not know one on our side in that situation. Some of our absentees are confidently looked for to-day. Under these circumstances we do not perceive how Gen. Whitfield can possibly fail to be admitted unless through heedless inattention on the part of some of his friends, Whoever among them may be absent from the hall at 1 p, m. on Tuesday next, unless kept away by sickness, may be responsible for the triumph of Mr. Grow's movement; « position which wo trust none of them will venture to occupy; a8 it will make for any gentleman maintaining the validity of Gov. Geary’s cer- tificate as the prima fasie evidence necessary to entitle Mr. W. to take his seat, an excru- ciatingly warm birth at home at the end of the session, or no sound conclusion may be drawn from the signs of the times. Whitfield to be legate from Kansas, on the SHOEMAKERS WANTED —THEE. \ workmen and two women’s, at No 117 between 19th and 20th strects. by LEVI we Humphreyville, B Pet i D P Tho Whitfield Case.—The test votes taken yesterday in the House vindicate the correct- of our anticipation expressed a week ago, that ina full Mouse the Republicans would find themselves shorn of their majority. Two hundred and nineteen members (without the Speaker) answered on roll-call yesterday. With that heavy vote they were beaten by three mejority, as they could muster but 108, against 111 contending for the validity of Gov. Geary’s certificate as embracing the prima facte evidence necessary to entitle General Whitfield to take his seat; leaving those in- clined to dispute his right, to proceed against it a3 in all previous cases wherein the right of a Member or Delegate holding.a similar certi- ficate to take his seat, has been questioned— no other precedent being on record from the foundation of the Government urtil to-day, if we are not greatly mistaken. Gen. Whitfield’s supporters on Monday last offered to postpone the question until Tuesday next, or to any day certain, when the absentecs might reason- ably be expected to have reached this city. That proposition was opposed, because the Republicans desired to reap, in his case, the advantage of the absence of an undue num- ber of their opporents. Or, in other words, to oust General Whitfield by 2 trick: knowing that a full House would defeat their purpose. They have wasted a week in the vain effort to accomplish that end of so questionable mo- rality, and so evident impropriety so far as the necessities of the public business are con- cerned Their policy has, so far, ended in making patent their reprehensible purpose, ud exposing the fact that they are not at this session to carry matters with so high a hand, as of late in the House hall. very great mischief there has fled, or nosound conclusion is to be drawn from the result of the contested votes given yesterday.
