The Vigilant Fire Company turned out yes- terday, in considerable numbers, to partici- | in the funeral obsequies of their deceased ellow-fireman of your city, Mr. Spring. The fine private dwelling of V. Taylor, Esq., of the firm of Boyce, Taylor & Co , is rapidly approac! completion. This will be one of the finest buildings on Bridge street, when denon and quite an ornament to the neighborhood. welve of the eighteen magnificent new omnibuses of the Union line, intended to run between the Capitol and Navy Yard, are near- ly completed, and will be placed upon the Toute as soon as the building intended to shel- ter them at night iscompleted. After these shall have been finished, it is the intention of Mr. Vanderwerken, the proprietor, to com- mence immediately the construction of the coaches necessary for the Georgetown route. The flour and grain market has become more firm and steady, and the _— of the latter have slightly advanced. Flour is firm at $675, and wheat at $1 40a$1 59 for red and white of good qualities, The regular session of our City Councils commences thisevening. The most important business which will first occupy their atten- tion will be the poll tax and suffrage bill. Nationa, Tueates.—We are happy to say that Jefferson had a fine benefit on Saturday night. He is not only at the head of his pro- fession as an artist, but he ia a gentleman in every sense of the word, and it gives us satis- faction to reeord the success of cne every way so worthy. To-night, the accomplished scenic artist, Mr. Gets, takes his benefit, and we trust will prove a handsome acknowledgment on the labors. This is also the last night of the ‘Queen. From his tattered and utterly worthless clothes and the fact that nought besides but 4 a key was found on him it wasclear that he was miserably poor. Tae Wasaixartox County Scaoos, atleast nthe footing offered in the act of Congress ofthe 11th of August last, do not seem to be desired by the people. Returns from three of the election districts have been received ‘vy the elerk of the Levy Court of the follow- ug charseter: District No. 1 voted 3 for “achool”’ and j¥ for ‘‘no school;’’ district No. 2 voted 6 for and 19 agsinst, and district No. blikewise gave { vote for and 12 against @ school. The very decided sentiment ex- pressed in these votes indicates the necessity of revising the act of Congress and making it com! able to the popular wish it seems that the grand objection to the system proposed in the aet is that the control does not lie in the people themselves, but in the Levy Court.— tntellsgencer Arresteo —This morning, Uficer Watson and Watchman Norwood arrested two colored boys, Alexander alias Sonny Jackson and Tel- emacdus Harris, who are charged with various vobberic#, and among them the robbery of George Burns’ shoe store, and Samatag’s va- riety stere on Pennsylvania avenue. They were left in eustody of officers at Justice Donn’ office while the arresting officers went in search of the stolen goods. ‘he officers have been searching for this party for some days past. The San Francisco Balietin, of the evening of the departure of the steamer, says : It is impossible to give a correct return of the State in time for tho sailing of the steamer. Sufficient, however, has been ascertained to give the State to Buchanan by at least 8,000 The Democrats will have a majority in the Legislature. The ‘‘ People’s Ketorm Ticket” has been carried in this county by an over- whelming majority. Our county Legislature ticket will, in all probability, be Republican. The county electoral vote is for Buchanan. The San Francisco correspondent of the New York Commereiai, writing on the 5th, says: The election yesterday passed off very quiet- ly; and, as compared with previous elections, shows great moral and political improvement. A body of citizens was organized to watch the polis, protect the glass ballot boxes and pre- serve order From the twelfth district, sit uated at the Mission, about two mile? out of town, a requisition for an additional force of citizens, to preserve order in that district was sent to the city in the afternoon. The counting of the votes was conducted openly, and citizens were allowed to witness the proceedings in all the districts excepting the fifth, where the room, though open, was too small to admit more than the Inspector and judges The Germans have generelly voted the Bu- chanan electoral ticket, and for ail the rest the Republican ticket. Fremont, itis said, will carry Santa Ciara county by a large ma- j ,» but it is not supposed that throughout the State he will get 20,000 votes.
