= = _——————— LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tse MoyTtaty Munzrtine of the Teachers’ Association took place on Saturday at, the Smithsonian Institution. The attendance of teachers, public and private and of both sexes, was full. The duties of the chair were ably dischar; by the President of the Associa- tion. r the reading of the minutes by the Secretary, & series of questions for discussion, offered at the prior meeting, were taken oP: spoken to, and disposed of. Business next in order was an essay on intreducing the study of the Constitution and Laws of the United States into common schools. It was a oonsid- erably long and apes prepared paper, b: Mr. 8. Y. AtLee, exhibiting much rese:re and meritorious industry t gave rise to several highly interesting speeches from dif- ferent members, wherein more than one of the problems anxiously asking solation from our family, city, State and General Governments were stated and discursed. It seemed to be the prevailing idea that the mere learning of the provisions of the Constitution by youth is insufficient to remedy their fast increasing dis- orderliness and insubordination, especially in the larger towns and cities. But one method that could be depended on for insuring a sen- sibly general compliance with the require- ments of —_— law and duty to country ap- peared to be left; that is tosay, the cultivation of the moral sense, the allegiance to God, and to country and law through Him. Lack of reverence is the glaring evil with our youth; they practically act as if nothing is greater, wiser, or better than themselves. They show little or no sense of responsibility, and rush at an immature age into all the indulgences granted in other towns and countries only to mature years. By some of the speakers it seemed to be thought that the boys were so bad because they had bad examples in the men—not the men in ordinary walks of life, but legislators, councillors, and states- m No matter what the cause or what the remedy of the evils complained of, the speak- ers all seemed to acknowledge their existence and deeply to deplore th: A vote of thanks Leeda Mr. AtLee for his able address. — Intelligencer. — - A Cartore.—Saturday night, the auxiliary guards of the Fifth Ward beats made a de- seent upon a house kept by Robert Cross, where Cross and a crowd of colored D wero found gambling. Whenthe pegel ade the discovery one of them was sent to call in the guards of the adjoining beat, while an- other watched the house. When they all had arrived they consulted about a plan to get in without giving the alarm to those inside. The officer who had been watching the house Lad noticed a large dog on the premises, and be, eetimg upon the hint, managed to get up a very tolerable imitation of the pawing of a dog upon the door. One of the colored per- sons inside inquired ‘‘ Who's dat scratehin’?”’ Cross replied, “It’s the dog; let him in.” A young man, named R. Pumpbrey, opened the door, and thereupon all the guards walked in. Cross extinguished the light and escaped. Pumphrey was caught outside by a gentleman who happened near by. The others were taken in the house, and confined in the guard house until yesterday morning, when they were disposed of according to law. Horse Taigr Arrestep —A few nights sinee Mr Archibald White, residing in the vi- civity of this city, had a valuable horse taken from his stable. From some circumstances Mr. White suspected that the thief would take the horse to Baltimore for sale, and accord- ingly on Saturday last be visited that city and engaged the services of officers Pierson and McKinley who commenced a search and short- ly discovered the horse in the possession of a gentleman in Old Town, who had purchased him for the sum of $140, and who gave the of- Scers such a description of the party who sold hia the horse asenabled them to trace him to @ groggery upon the Point, where be was spending tae proceeds of the sale ina drinkin frolic. All but $3 of the amount was recovere: upoc the person of this man. who when taken before Justice Durham gave his name as Jacob Bierbaugb. Heconfeased the theft, and state a2 @ provocation that Mr. White had refused to trust him for three bushels of wheat Jus- tice Durham committed him to await the action of the authorities of this District. 3 Uswetcome Visirors.—Saturday morning a numberof very fashionably dressed young men were noticed walking through the Centre Market, displaying their gold chains, pins and rings in a manner that attracted universal at- tention. Frequent inquiries were made as to their names and residences, but no satisfac- tory answer could be given until a delegation of the city police was observed following close on their heels, It was then whispered that they were “ swells’’ from Philadelphia, on the lookout for‘ green uns.’’ They have not been beard of since Saturday afternoon, when, it is suppozed. they left the city to keep out of the Teach of our police. Z a Seriovs Arrain.—Friday night, a Mr. Jas. Scrivener had a leg broken by falling frem the stepsof a house in the Second Ward. He had been drinking, and stopped at the house to light a cigar, when he was seized by a man and thrown from the steps. The fractured limb was set, and he was doing as well as could be expected until last night, when he was at- tacked with delirium, and became so vi- lent that it was necessary to callin the Guards on that beat to prevent his doing damage to himself. They secured-him, and have, by tarns, remained with him until this morning. Scrivener’s friends are arranging to remove bim to the infirmary. Proranity in Tax Srrezt.—Yesterday evening, a colored woman created considera- ble disturbance in the Second Ward by using most profane and indecent language. Watch- man Norwood arrested her, and several colored persons who were near volunteered to become witnesses against her. When they arrived at the guard house Mr. Norwood arrested all of them and put all in the cells, charging them with the same offence, it appearing that they had been guilty of the same disord and indecent behavior. They were retained till this morning. and disposed of by the police magistrate officiating. Pourrican Discussion at CouesviLuE.— The discussion, on Saturday, at Colesville, he- tween Messrs. Cluskey and McCutchen, of this » drew together a large assemblage at that point. The debate was opened by Mr. Clus- key, who ocoupied three quarters of an hour, and was followed by Mr. McCutchen, who *poke for the same length of time Mr. Clus- key again took the stand, and treated Fill- moreism to such a ling that Mr. McCut- en evidently g the cause up as “past praying for.’’ and did not attempt a reply. A New Coaca Factory —The new coach making establishment of Mr. Thos. I. Doulin and Matthew Wilson discovered a beautiful lake, five and one half miles in circumference, in Sibley county, township 14. A Peritovs Ring —A journeyman hatter, residing about half a miie trom Plainfield, while going from that place to his home, on Saturday night, being on the track at ths time an extra coal train was going up the Central railroad, was caught by the cow-catcher, and after several unsuccessful attempts to notify the engineer of his whereabouts, he arrived in Somerville He kept his courage up with the idea that the train would stop at some intor mediate station, but it being merely a conl train he was obliged to go all the way through.
