A Goop Max.—Mr. Editor: On Sunday last our quiet town was visited by a procession from your city, and, for its credit, I hope will be the last of the kind that will*annoy our citizens and violate what ought to be a sa- cred day. And for what purpose was this motly erowd marched through our streets, fol- lowed by white and black men, women, and children? Nothing but show and parade, for certainly it added nothing to the solemnity of the occasion. Moreover, these parades bring together those who annoy our citizens by breaking into the engine houses, ringing of bells, breaking up church service, and drink- ing and carousing. Those having charge of the music on Sun- day last appeared desirous of annoying those in the bgt si church, for in passing that venerable edifice they increased in noise, both instrumental and vocal. It is to be hoped that the authorities of the town will take steps to arrest and check these abuses in future. A Crtizex. Grorerrown, Oct. 7, 1856. This isa good man. From the ends of his horror-bristling hair to the scarf-skin of hi virtuous pedal extremities, we are sure he i without guile. No doubt he gives thanks many times a day that he is not like other men—publicans and sinners We hail it as one of the advantages of consolidating the two cities, that in geoph ay we shall annex this good man to Washington. Bat what procession does he refer to? Can he mean that of the Odd Fellows and Masons which on Sunday last foliowed the remains of & lamented brother to Oak Hill teresa y that funeral which touched all beholders its affecting solemnities conducted with that rigid decorum peculiar to the funeral service of the great brotherhoods of Masonry and Odd Fellowship ?—was this one of the “parades ’ he speaks of which brings together those who break into ine houses, ring bells, break up charch service, drink and carouse? We are afraid our righteous co: dent has read his Bible to beri é little purpose if he bas not discovered that the life and teachings of the Saviour, he professes to follow, was one continued rebuke of just such Sunday Phari- seeism az he exhibits. ~ Tus Coxprtion or Youna Taroor.—The Baltimore Sun of this morning says: ‘‘ Nathan H. Secondly, it was not proven that he was mistaken, but the gentleman, in consider- ation of the youthfulness of the guilty party, declined to prosecute. A Goop Cuaxce vor Investuznt.—C. W. Things and matters generally in our city, are unusually quiet at the presenttime Every description of business, both mercantile and mechanical, seems to be movingon at a steady aud prosperous rate. Persons eng»ged in either of the above descriptions of employ- ment appear to have but little time to spare, since the days have become considerably shortened, to devote to anything else; conse- quently the discussion of politics and such matters, ig confined chiefly to those who have least at stake, and know the least about them. The little excitement consequent upon the municipal election in Baltimore has pretty well died away, and both parties seem to be satisfied with the result The Fillmourners regard it as a foreshadowing of their future sucoess, and the unterrified Democracy regard it as an unerring indieation of their triumph in the State on the 4th of November. The better portion of each party deplore and la- ment the disgraceful moos and inhuman butch- eries that occurred in our sister city. There is but one way to cure the evil—let the law- abiding portion of each party cease to wink at such conduct, and frown down and discard from their associations the reckless authors, and they will soon cease. Better do it while we can, before we have universal anarchy, or may be the mobites and their abettors will rule us with a rod of iron. It seems a little remarkable that a called meeting of our City Councils is to be had on Monday evening, and that no member of either Board should have any knowledge of the fact. If we are correctly iuformed, the Charter gives the Mayor the power to convene them whenever he shall be requested (in writing) so to do by acertain number of members And we are well satisfied that no such request has, as yet, been made. The newspaper item from which we gather the information that they are to be called together, also says that con- siderable business of importance is to be laid before them, among it the poll tax and suf- frage bill, and that the passage of an ordi- nance for carrying out its provisions is indis- — before another election can be held. uch is not the fact ; the power to do so or let it alone rests entirely with the Corporation. e are pleased to see that an effort is about being made to revive and reorganise, in part atleast, the firedepartment. nis is certainly a little gratifying. It could not be in a much more inefficient condition than it is at this time If a five of any magnitude should un- fortunately cecur among us we should have to depend almost entirely upon the Washington fire companies to suppress it. See notice of joint meeting. The Democracy are having a grand demon- stratio: Brookville to-day. ik, Ould, Esq., of our city, is one of the speakers.
