We take piide in again presenting a model weekly paper At this interesting junctore the carefully digested array of political sta- tist’es, item’, and news given in the Weekly Star will be found of special value. The other departments of the paper exhibit their ususl comple ene =. Price—3 cents per number, or $1 25 per year a SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS The Intelligencer, in introducing to its readers a communication from a Kentucky subscriber, advocating the claims of Mr. Fill- more, says: r “The value of experience and of proved capacity would seem to be more highly appre- ciated among us in every department and walk of life than in affairs of State, and in matters of practical administration under a mt as remarkable for the complexity as for the harmony of its arrangements. No would be so indiscreet as to commit a P mal or mechanical commission to cone who had not by some previous training quali- fied himself for the task; yet how many are willing to confide the highest official trust and the most delicate affairs of State to untried and i mced hands! But, if the value of experience in civil affairs is to be under- rated or overlooked, it is none the less impor- tant, nor the folly less in disregarding its claims, especially when coupled, as in the case of Mr. Fillmore, with principles and qualities of cardinal and peculiar value to the Repub- lie at the present critical conjuncture.’ A Philadelphia correspondent of the [xtel- ligencer says of politics in that State : “‘The Fremont party have not as yet put out an electoral ticket in Pennsylvania, put are awaiting the result of the State election. If it goes against the Democracy by a large majority, they will then probably announce their ticket ; but if the Democrats succeed, or are defeated only by a small majority, they will not attempt a separate ticket, flattering theméelves with the very fallacious hope which cannot and will not be realized, that the Fillmore party will concede a portion of their ticket to them, but which under no cir- cumstances cr in any contingency will be ac- corded. The Fremonters, therefore, in sucha result, muct either abstain from voting or must support the ‘‘ American” ticket, which is out out, first and last and always, for Fill- more.” The Union, in announcing the Democratic triumph in Florida, says : “The Kuow Nothings entered into the can- vass with great spirit, and from the first were sanguige of success; but the result shows that the 2 oe of this gallant State cannot be shaken in their fidelity to the Union and the Constitation.”” The Union looks upon it as a significant fact, that whilst the Fillmore procession was passing Independence Square, in Philadelphia, on Thursday night, where the Fremonters were holding their meeting, “‘ the two masses joined tn cheering the Union ticket?’—dissi- pating the idle stories which charge that the Buchanan and Filimore men are arranging a combination of their forcer. The Unton adds: ** No stronger proof of a cordial s ath: between Know Nothings and Black Repubit. eas could be furnished, unless it is found in the fast that the Know Ni othings are giving their hearty ror to a State ticket in whicn they know that Black Republicavism predom- inaies. That the success of this ticket would be a Fremont victory is known to the Know Nothings wh» support it. It is absurd for men to supportit. It is absurd for men to support such « ticket and pretend to be friends of Fillmore.’ PERSONAL +++» A Mrs. Cutler lectured in the congre- gations! church at Bureau, Illinois, for the “rel'ef of suffering Kansas,” on Tuesday last. . see If we are such a debilitated, degener- ated and sickly race as the English and their admirers pretend to think we are, ‘ how is it that we always lick em ?’’ says Jonathan + Oliver O'Donnel and lady, Charles R R. Greg ory, friends of the parties. _c+rs Hon. A G, MeGrath, of South Caro lina, declines the re-nomination tendered him by his friends. He says: “My mind is com- platy settled as to the course I should pur am not a candidate, and will uot serve tf elected. I am grateful to my friends, but they will serve me best to let recent events lose tke excitement they have caused. But, as if to relieve the aforesaid Centre Market from its whitewashed sides and moss covered roof prom- inence, a number of enterprising men have been at work, dotting the square with little shanties, some of them on wheels—to be re- moved from place to place, when necessary, to avoid damage by the continual alteration of the grades! This is a good idea, and | amon, worthy of a patent. Thus, Newtown has risen with the demands of the times, and as suddenly as many a western village. The Baltimore Riots.—Really ove would have supposed that the deeds of blood perpe- trated in Baltimore on the day of the municipal election would have satisfied the most sanguin- ary of the moboerats who seem to have control each day filled with details of new outrages, shootings, beatings and maimings. Taken in connection with the many other acts of violence committed there latterly, the city of Baltimore utation—in lieu of the proud designation of “the Monumental City,”? she is becoming known as the ‘‘ Mob City.”” city there is ccarce a building unscathed ; in- deed, that many of them are literally riddled by balis.
