——eE i j) ieee Oye ihe EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. | Sr. Marrnaw’s —Yesterday, both morniag and evening. we formed one of the immenge throng, which filled aecteeas ble standing or Dg 5] of St. Matthew’s church ; the ceasion which drew so ther was the salient’ dedication of t dition to Ne church lately made. It was a t the Right Rey. Bishop McGill of Richmond, would preach, but —— a delay- ed, the many to whom talents of this pre- late were 80 well known, and who had been attracted to the church by the announcement made on the previous Sunday, were disar- inted. Notwithstanding the services were e most intereeting, solemn high mass was celebrated by Rev. E. Lyman of Baltimore. assisted by Rev. J. B Rev. G. McEthen y The music by the choir was more than fine— the Mass, Haydn No, 5—and acknowledged to be the most difficult, as well as the finest of the productions of this great master, was fault- an given by the choir under the direction of Mr. Crouch, musteal director. The orches- tra, which embraced the first talent of this city and Baltimore, was led by Mr. Keikhoffer, ii by Mr. Lenschow, well known as the leader of the farfamed “‘ Germania.”” Under such leadership, it was impossible that the music should not have been perfect. The so- rano solos were admirably rendered by Mre. c Young, of Baltimore. The tenor solo, in 0, ‘et incarnatus est,” was given the ¢ by Mr G@. French with a feeling and excel- lence which was duly sppreciated. Mr H. Palmer, the organist of the church, presided at his post with that talent for which he is go justly celebrated. i We have to note the exquisite manner wit! which Mr. Crouch sung the ‘‘ Pro Peceatig”’ from Rossini’s Stabat Mater, also the Jubilate Deo solo by Mrs. Young, and the duett, ‘Que est Homo,’’ from the Stabat Mater, sung jn the evening by Mrs. Young and Miss Kelly. We might sum up our gratification by pro- nouncing the entire service perfection, and se remember the pleasure enjoyed. ie improvements to the church were sug- gested and carried out under the su of agentleman connected with the artment , resco painters—Messrs. AccrprasLe Present —On Saturday evon- ing last, Mr. Singleton Golden, a hack- man of our city, was the recipient of a costly and magnificent coachwhip, prepared atthe instance of a Baltimorean. The pre- senta‘ion took place at Messrs. Reese and Thomson’s restaurant, Pennsylvania avenue. The whip is truly a most supericr affair, with a plaited worked handle of sixteen strings, such as are used for violins, and is said fs 3 the first work of this description attempted in this country for twenty years. It is heavily mounted with pure silver bands, and haga massive head of the same material, upon which is engraved, ‘+ Presented to Singleton Golden, Sept»mber 27, 1856”? It is imper- vious to water ; and while combining the qual- ities of ornament and practical utility, refleets the higheet credit on the manufacturer, Mr. D. E. Beehler, of Liberty street, Baltimor-. Before presenting the whip, the donor made the following brief remarks, which were hap- pily responded to by Mr. Golden - Singleton Golden—Sir: In fulfillment of previous promise, { now take great pleasure in presenting to you this whip, as a fitting testimonial of my Ligh regard for you as an experienced and careful hackman In our free country every legalized calling is honor- adie, though in many instances xot honored ; and hackmen have stood in the front ranks of the most abused. This, no doubt, has arisen in a great degree from the want of system ur roper understanding among yourselves; but, that as it may, I fecl convinced that they are, as a class, more sinned against than sin- Bi; The tired traveller, or pleasure-seeker, while comfortably seated within your coach, seldom contemplates the dangers and anxiety of wind which constantly surround you, by way of collisions, pitiless storms or the taking fright of your horses—ocaurrences always to be anticipated, and unavoidable. Could every one see you through the same giass from which I take my view, they would be unani- mous with me, I think, in asserting that the hackman’s duty is one of anxious solicitude and greatest responsibility. Encouragement should greet you at every turn whore duty is performed, and expressions of regard extend- ed when deserved. Such treatment would impel you on to constant vigilance in your calling, and prompt you to remedy whatever defects may exist in your present system In conclusion, I would observe, in presenting this whcp, that I entertain overy confidence o1 the manner in which it will be used by you, but would particularly enjoin, should your pas*ion at any time be suddenly provoked against your horses, the noblest of the animal king- dom, spare the lash! And now sir, accept the gift, with my grateful appreciation of your conduct and treatment on every occasion in which your coach has been brought into requi- sition by me. Nationau Tazatae —The dramatic enter- tainments of this popular resort, will be re- newed this evening with the appearance of the beautiful and gifted Lizzie Weston Da- yeoport, sustained by the clever young actor, Mr. A H. Davenport, and the full aud very efficient dramatic company engaged at the Holliday street theatre, Baltimore. The ini- tial play is a thrilling production, replete with exciting in erest, entitled, “The Actress of Padua; A story of the Stage;’’ in which Mrs. Davenport has achieved deserved popu- Jarity. The characters of the play are dis- tributed with admirable judgment amongst rvision reasury * the talented members co ing the company The conclading farce of ‘‘ The Young Widow.” is an ontiitng’y neat and diverting trifle excellently cast. Honom to tat Passipext.—The field, staff, aod mere / officers of the volunteers of the District of Columbia, are to assemble at fhe railroad d to-morrow morning, at half- past 5 o’clock precisely, to perform escort duty. They will form an escort of honor to the President of the United States, from the com- mencement of his jouer on avisit to New Hawpsbire, and will be relieved by the vol- unteers of Maryland at the State line or the Sa of Baltimore. ‘The company of President’s Mounted Guard will assemble at the Executive Mansion at 5 o'clock on that morning to escort the Presi- dent to the depot. DisgracesuL.—Saturday night, a crowd of ‘oung men gathered on the corner of Ninth and streets to witness an expected fight. The belligerents were on the spot cursing each other in such phrase as they thought would best entertain their respective backers. But the fight did not come off, very much to the disgust of the expectant audience. As the arties eerie fighti cen 1 invited opponen' come down street and get NA head knocked off. Accipsxt.—This morning, s colored boy named Lewis Travers had his arm crushed in the cog-wheels in Havenner’s steam cracker bakery. The accident was, it is said, the re- sult of bis own carelessness, he being at the time omer in @ controversy with another boy in the machine room. A white man was severely wounded in the same establishment a few weeks ago a crushing bis fingers be- tween the rollers.
