EVENING STAR. BLACE EYES. BY WILLIE EDGAR FAROR. Blue eyes are very lovely— Blue of sd are soft and sweet ; So witching and so tender When kindred eyes they greet ; wean steal like notes of music ‘Neath Kohpsarae sable pall, Within the sptrit’s chamber. As sweet as love’s light call But eyes of raven color Have sybil hold cn me— And from their sparkling features I weave my poesy 1 own thetr fairy magic, Admit their mystic thrall— They shroud me in their robing As pure as angel’s pall Black eyes first set me rhyming— Black eyes still feed the fire— Adding im ioned fuel Unto the heart's desire And ever shall my tribute— The finest of love's emprize, Be paid in minstrel homage At the shrine of bright Black Eyes. A Sorprer’s Honor.—In an old newspaper printed soon after the close of the revolution, we find the following singular statement ‘-During the march of a detachment of the American army, through New Jersey, in the Jate war, a silver spoon was found missing in a house where vel po of troops had billeted. Suspicion pitched on a soldier, who was seen to have entered the apartment where the spoon was kept, and he was accused of the theft. “May I vever meet salvation!’’ exclaimed the soldier—“may I be sunk into the endless Yegions of perdition, if I have seen, heard of, or taken your spoon!’’ *‘But no one else could have taken it,’’ re- plied the host. “The soldier again went through the ‘‘man- ual’ of his attestations of innocence, and im- recations against himself if he was guilty. @ landlord looked astonished, and being an honest man, was obliged to believe the suldier But just on the point to leave the examina- tion—he taking hold of the soldier's coat and looking bim in the face—said “Now say upon your honor, that you have not got my spoon, and I shall be satisfied.” “Upon my honor,’’ said the soldier to him- eelf, after thinking a few minutes. ‘‘Upon my honor! Poh! blast you'’’ be cried, pull- ing the epoon from his pocket, and giving it to its owner—‘“Blast your spoon—take yonr #yon and be d——d'"’ The host started surprised; and while !a- menting that the great principles of religion and morality should have less weight in the mind of a intelligent being than the principle of what he conceived to be a mere ound, the soldier swung hia knapsack, joined the corps, sad marched off E> An old bachelor says that marriage was instituted for uo other purpose than to prevent men sleeping diagenally in bed. eel MOVEMENTS OF OCEAN STEAMERS.
