Ths Baltimore horses werc taken home yesterday afternoon, having been beaten, according to the estimate of the Washingto- nians, whe may, by-the-bye, have been some- what too partial to home, in furming this judg- ment.) The truth is, the gentlemen from Baltimore drove their horses over here (forty miles) at a spanking pace, after some three weeks of con- stant and killing sleighing; and ventured to encounter the fast horses of this vicinity in five or six hours after reaching W igton. With proper rest, we have no doubt that they would have come off easy victors, knowing, as we do, that Mr. Burns’s Pilot has certainly made his mile in 2.36, and that the colt of Mr. McDonald, which was driven with Felix, tone of the fastest horses in America,) cost his owner, not long since, $2.700, having beat- en Felixin a square race. ‘“ Poor Old Paddy,” the sorrel pacing horse of Mr. James Roach, of Alexandria County, Va, under the cir- EVENING cumstances, on Tuesday, ‘laid out cold’’ the E g of our old friend Paddy, (who, like ourself, hails from the kingdom of Cooney.) we are reminded of the fact that he has more “horse sense” than any other piece of horse flesh we ever knew. Thus he writes “<I was conversing with two gentlemen on my way down from the Capitol after the ad- journment of the House this afternoon, when # stranger requested a werd with me. No one answered my inquiry directly, but seme friends svon came up, who told me that my assailant was Albert Kust, M. C., from Arkansas. He gave no hint of any cause or pretext he may have had for this assault.” After sume comments on the character of the resulution of Mr. Rust, Mr. Greeley, contin- uing, writes that his assailant “turned and walked down along: I followed, conversing with two friends. TELEGRAPHIC NEwWs, FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BY HOUSE PRINTING TELEGRAPH. ONE WEEK LATER FROM EUROPE. Arrival of the Steamer Arabia. Havirax, Jan. 31.—The Cunard steamship Arabia, which sailed from Liverpool on the morning of the 19th, arrived here this even. ing, bringing 107 passengers. he steamer Asia arrived out on the i 3th ani the steamer Baltic on the 17th. The steamer Union did not touch at Southampton on her passage out. These had been intense interest caused by the news from Vienna, which was at first un- favorable. When the Austrian Ambassador handed the allied note to Nesselrode, he said he was not authorized to enter into a discus- sion, but if the note was not ace; uncon- ditionally before the 15th, he and all the Aus- trian Embassy must leave St. Petersburg. To revent this, Nesselrode communicated with Vienna direct, and Prince Gortschakoff at Vi- enna had a talk with Count Buol, in which the former } reduced a memorandum express- ing the general inclination of Russia to nego- tate, but proposing certain alterations. Count Buol received the document, but in- asmuch as it did not contain the uncenditional acceptance of the propositions, Austria could not a ed without the cencurrence of France and England. The ambassadors of these owers were accordingly sent to Lendon and ‘aris, and a reply was received that the West- ern powers had no motive to change the decis- i ady carefully considered ; and further, that if Russia did not accept by the 18th, Count Esterhasy and Austria would immedi- ately seek to obtain the assured cooperation of the other powers While every one in Western Europe was on the guc vive, the London Times’ Vienna cor- respondent telegraphed under date of Wednes- day, the 16th, at10A.M., that Russia has unconditionally accepted the propositions of the German diet. This was reported to be authentic, and caused an immense excitement throughout England, but the government — published the next day put a different face upon the affair— being in effect that Russia had only accepted the allies’ proposals as basis of negotiation This slightly relaxed public confidence, and less sanguine hopes were now entertained Doubts were expressed that Russia had merely | accepted the proposals to prolong the negotia- tions and gain time THE MARKETS Livpmroot, Jan. 18.—Messrs.
