Tue Day Star or American Freepos; or the Birth and Early Growth of Tolerationin the Province of Maryland. By (ieorge Lynn- Lachan Davis. Baltimore: Jobn Murphy &Co. Por sale by Col. Shillington This is an able compilation from valuable historical documents, conclusively proving that religious freedom, as secured by the first great charter of Maryland, given in 1632, was never violated by the Lords Proprietary. “Upon the banks of the St. Mary's, amid the wilderness of Americ, was planted that seed which has since become a tree of life tothe Nation, extending it: branches and casting its shadows across a whole continent. The rec- vords have been caretully searched No case of persecution occurred during the adminis- tration ef Goy. Calvert, from the foundation of the settlement of St. Mary’s, to the year 1647. His policy included the bumblest as well as the mest exalted; and his maxim was peace to all—proscriptionto none. Religious liberty was a vital part of the earliest com- mon law of the province.” Taking this as an initial point, Mr. Davis woes through the chronicles of the Province, and while fortifying his position by argument piled upon argument, he gives his readers a Slimpse of the members and general state of society, of the religion and legislation, of the life and manners of the men who worshipped in the wilderness, at the first rude altar of Liberty. The work abounds with historical facts, many of them relating to the ancestors of families now living around us, andeyen our professed “ American’’ friends will find much of interest in its pages. We commend it to public patronage, as a vuluable contribution to the archives of America. Grace O’Mattey. By William H. Maxwell. Philadelphia: T..B. Petersou. For sale by Col. Shillington. WE SINCERELY TENDER Virginia Financial Affairs —We hear many complaints from large property holders in Virginia, that the dealers in stocks, &¢ , at the North, fail to appreciate Virginia securities of any and all sorts, at as high rates as they deserve. It strikes us that this fact, which, we know well, operates seriously against the Prosperity of the State, ie the result of the mirmanagement, wholly, of her Legislature when tinkering upon her financial affairs They permit some of the Virginia banks to issue notes payable (in specie) in out-of-the- way places, not to be reached by the person holding them under a journey requiring from three days to a week, and far off of any route over which a public carrier of bank notes and other valuables travels regularly. The fact that they are made redeemable at points which make them almost as worthless as notes of non-specie paying banks, being intentionally concealed from the casual observer by the fineness of the lettering in which tho informa- tion is printed on the notes. Moses Newest, President. Aten W. Dongs, Seeretary. We learn that the resolutions on the subject at the recent session of the United States Agri- cultural Society in this city have been printed, and will be forwarded to the members of Con- gress whenever the House perfects its organi- zation. The replies to the letters accouipany- ing these resolutions will show what the real interest of each member in agriculture is, as the committee are instructed to repert them. It has been too often the case that solicitations for Congressional countenance in agricultural matters have been thrown under the desks while the honorable recipients would oceupy hours in acknowledging invitations to some little political barbecue. And yet, what a large proportion of almost every gentleman's constituents are agriculturalists? We hope that when the memoria! of the National Agri and bid fair to destroy her financial reputa- tion, ere long, completely. It is sincerely to be hoped that the present Virginia Legislature may #peedily begin the geod work o: reform in this connection Miss May—the New Amorican Soprano. — Below the reader will find an extract from the Paris correspondent of the Philadelphia North American concerning the rising American cantatrice. Many of our fellow-citizens will remember her as Miss Juliana May, the daughter of our late fellow-citizen, Dr George May, aud the cousin of Dr. John Frederick May, the Hon. Henry May, and Co}. Charles A. May, U.S. A. Her mother is the daugh- ter of the late Theodore Lee, Esq , and the sister of Mrs Joseph Gales of this city. Pus- sessing a remarkable voice and figure, the latter giving evidence of a strong constitution, this talented and beautiful young lady has studied her profession much longer and more assiduously, under the best masters of Italy, than any other American. We have fre- quently heard of her eminent success and promise, from travellers on the continent, and have looked forward to hear of her brilliant debut with great interest indeed. We fear that it will be some years before she returns tion prohibiting all debate for a week; mo tion laid on the table. : The House then proceeded with the 119th vote for a Speaker, with the following result, viz: Whole number of votes cast, 195; necessary to a choice, 98 : For Richardson 67, Banks 91, Fuller 29, Campbell of Ohio 5, serttering 3.
