EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. — Sexpay Ssow Srorw No 3.—Washing- tonians were surprised on rising yesterday Morning—some agreeably and some disagree- ably—by finding the earth cladin a bran new white mantle of snow, in place of the rather tattered, milk and molasses colored one she wore on Saturday night. Some rubbed their eyes, thinking it all a confounded unpleasant dream, and addressed themselves to sleep again, hoping that broad daylight would have something better in store than a third succes- sive snowy Sabbi ut morning past. and noon, and evening, and still the flakes fell, and this morning they are “ at it again,”’ as from confirmed habit they didn’t know when to stop. So we may expect another sleighing oarni and the unfortunate horses will cateh it again. and the suffering poor must endure another season of suffering and privation. A fresh call is now made upon the sympathies of the charitable. There are probably five thousand people in this city depending on their day labor support at occuyatious which are suspended temporarily by the weather. Do not leave the needy to be cared for at this time by the city councils, or by charitable as- sociations. What is wanted is, discriminating individus! charity. Give out all your little jebs, sucn as washing, sewing, scrubbing, shoveling snow and coa! We saw a man shoveling snow in frout of his house this morn- ing. who is estimated to be worth some fifty thousand dollars, while some poor wretches, who looked as though they hado’t eat a warm meal for a month, stood shivering on the corner, shovel in hands waiting for a job. Wasn't this emall potatoes? Natiowar Ixstitcre —At the annual meet- ing of the National Institute, held on the 16th inst , the following gentlemen were elected officers for the year 1556: Lieut M. F. Mason, Washington. a Brevoort, Es Poor Poxto.—The reaslers of the Star have, doubtless, come across the wonderful story of the Boaten dog, Pento, who committed suicide by throwing himself upon the railroad track through mortification at having been whipped for stealing meat. At a ‘‘cirele’’ of canine spiritualiats, held the other night in the rear of the Star Build- ings, the shade of Ponto appeared, and, in a series of tremendous raps, denounced the above-mentioned report as a gross libel upon his fair fame. He admits the suicide, but de- nies the meat. It was simply an affair of the affections ; having been betrayed by the lady dog of his choice, the fairest but most fickle of her sex, he had, in a fit ef desperation, re- soved to put an end to the existence which had now become a burden to him. Editors who have unwittingly given currency to the slander, will, as an of justice to Ponto, cir- culate the contradiction. Memaers or Concress, public speakers, vocalists or any other cla:3 affected with hoarseness incidental to speaking, will do well to read the advertisement of “ Bronchial Troches,’’ which have commended themselves to many distinguished divines, and are recom- mended by prominent doctors. They possess the power of affording relief to the throat af- ter any continued exertion, and we know of many in the theatrical profession who find them truly valuable. The prescription was originally put up by Messrs. John I. Crown & Son, of Boston, and sold to a few, who, find- ing it suited to their wants, recommended it to others, until it has thus worked its way along, and become of the most valuable rem- edies for bronchial affections known. Jno. F. Callan and J. B. Moore have the valuable remedial agents for sale Tar Poor Bart.—The gallant Highlanders have again taken the field, carrying the ban- ner of benevolence. It will be cheering to the hearts of those suffering from cold and hunger during this stormy season, and grati- fying to our numerouz benevolent readers, to know that they are meeting with a success which gives henor to our city as well as to the allant corps in the undertaking Professor Munder, with characteristic munificence, has given his splendid Assembly Hall for the oc- casion, free of all charge. Tho diplomatic corps and Executive departments, together with the legislators of the Union and our own citizens, are already nobly responding to the benevolent appeal Natiowan Taeatre.—Those who were dis- hema at the unavoidable non-appearanee of Mr. Chanfrau and Miss Albertine last week, will be pleased to learn that they will certainly perform on Wednesday ovening A very attractive bill is offered, comprising the laughable farce of the “First Night,” which, together with “ The Toodles” and “Jack Shepperd,”’ cannot fail to fill the house. The versatile talents of Mr. Chan- frau, and the pleasing acting of the beautiful Miss Albertine. have won them high praise wherever they have appeared. Ha' Ha! '—The “ Merry Bachelors,’’ al- though it ie Leap Year, are not discomfitted, bat announce their determination to give a Grand Ball, at Odd Fellows’ Hall, Navy Yard, on the 24th instant. We intend to accept this invi » we do—and we shall ‘make a note tiractive af- fair. - Tar Buoower —Despite her eecentricity of costume, the fair Dr. Lydia Sayer ia acquiring considerable practice, and is highly spoken of by those who have profited by her professional services. Many of her friends hope that she will deliver a locture ou her theory of “Health, ond if she dees we shall cortainly attend, over ovking the idivsyncrasy of dress in our admiration of the cultivated intellect which “the blooucr possesses, Caimusar Cornt— u Norbeek, Thomas White, Henry Crowell alias White, and Wm.
