Wallack and Mrs. Melinda Jones with unmistakable manifesta- tions of their high appreciation of the manner in which they rendered the text of Ehak- speare in their respective parts of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Nothing can be more dif- ficult in a histronic way than to satisfy such an audience in a great play. Those who do *0 may fairly be written down as having ascended to the top-round of the theatrical ar- tist’s professional ladder. Mr. Wallack is just now in the full vigor of manhood, and has evidently improved step by step in his twenty years professional experience, until he has fairly become the very first (genera!) tragedian in America at this time. There are American pieces and one or two others in which Forrest may excel him ; but in classic —Shakesperian—drama, Kean only has been his superior on thia side of the Atlantic.
