a , NING STAR. INTELLIGENCE. A Weppixe Ceremony was celebrated yes- ferday afternoon in the First Presbyterian Church on Four-and-a-half street; Col. M. Thompson leading to the altar Miss Mary G. Douglass, and the Rey. Byron Sunderland, in a solemnly impressive manner, conducting the im ant ceremony. A large number of ladies and gentlemen were present, including the mar- ried as well as persons now in a state of celi- bacy. The latter bad a fine opportunity of seeing bow such ‘‘ knots’’ are “ tied,’’ and to prepare themselves accordingly for the hyme- oH a performance. popular and gallant Colonel, it is well known hereabout, is a mem- ber of the Washington bar; and nearly ali of his bretbren in the law paid him the com- pliment of their presence, togethet with the Jadges of the Criminal and the Orphans’ Court, and the clerks and the other attiches of the several legal tribunals. On the con- clusion of the ceremony, nearly all of the assemblage advanced and congratulated the bride and groom on their happy union; and during half an hour, very many hopes were expressed ttat the twain may realize their fondest anticipations and the fruition of their cherished hopes; while the hand-shaking was conducted in all the warmth of unadulterated friendship. “Who next?’’ we —— = oung lady significantly inquire of her female Soeeunion: while a deep tush suffused the eheeks of the maiden who was thus accostel Ah! ‘who next ’’’ (pass it round) is the im; patient interrogatory ' Covrr or Ovatms.—Yestorda: of Joseph Maura, application was made for papers from the Treasury Department; which was granted. This isa claim (arising under the 9th article of the treaty concluded between the United States an Spain in 1319) for losses sustained by the claimant in consequence of the invasion of West Florida by General Jack- son in 1814. The amount was allowed by the judge at Pensacola as far back as 1824, in pursuance of the provisions of the act of Con- gress, approved March 3, 1323, to carry out the provisions of the 9th article of the treaty of 1819 with Spain. Payment has been re- fused by the Secretary of the Treasury on the ground that the claims for losses in 1514 were uot embraced by the treaty. In the case of James P. King, Judge Sear- borough delivered the opinion of the court, ring testimony to be taken. This is » elaim fur $12 900, pilot's fees at Brazos Santi- ago, during the late war with Mexico King was branch pilot under the laws of Texas, but the acting quartermaster at Brazos San tiago disregarded his commission as such, and refused him his fees for pilotage. Testimony was ordered to be taken in the ease of Lemuel P. Todd, a purser in the U nited States navy. The court holds that gov- ernment should indemnify bim for losses ari- siog outof the depreciation of Treasury notes received by him to be expended in the public service. In the casa of Richard De Trevilla, testimo- ny was ordered tobetakep. The question volved relates to the commutation of rev tionary officers under the several resolves Congress. The petition in the case of R. T. P. Allen was pronounced defective. After being amend- ed, the taking of testimony will! be ordered. The Solicitor coneladed his argument in the Florida claims case. Simon Stevens, Ezq.. of Pennsylvania, was Sworn on attorney of this court; and the court adjourned. NatioxaL Tugatrr.—%n Saturday even- ing we sre to have ““Mazeppa,”’ dramatized from Byron's beautiful m, presented us an equestrian spectacle. Itis seldum such noy- eities are produced, but, when they are, they should be seen by al!, as they impart a tangi- bility tothe fearful, though still grand c tions cf the poet’sfancy. No theme furnishes sueh opportunities for the playwright to dis- play his ability or the scenic artist to demon- strate his pictorial skill. ~-Mazeppa’’ is re- plete with processions, combats, tableaux, startling positions, 2nd daringsituations. The Sight of Mazeppa tied to the back of his un- tamed steed, willbe given with great effect, the trained horse Rocket having been secured to make the fearful run up the precip from the stage to the ceiling of the theatre All the popular actors from the Baltimore Maseum will appear in the drama. The laughable farce of My Neighbor's Ww will likewise be performed, in which Mr. Jefferson, a chip of the old family block, wi'l impersonate the character of Doctor Smith, in addition tv that of Drolinski in the spectacle. “Hewastry,”’ in the Intelligencer, of this g, in an article on the destitute poor of EVE 4 in the care u- of ice returued to their desolate humesa, “ trusts that men of wealth. and those good women of wealth found in Seriptural times, and bappily always here and there apon oarth, will bear in mind those peor familics of no ability, or at mo-t Very slight, who are returuing to those poor EC te cities. Every nove and corner was filled with gay and beau- tifat young ladies, and gallant and chivalric youug volunteers. The merry dance occupied all, and the merrier laugh testified the ux- ‘toyed happiness of ali antil their usual hour for separating. Tue Paestpext’s Mouxtep Guanp, irly a Gallant corps, will giv eir third grand an- sual ball on Tuesday evening, the 20tu instant. Those of our fair readers who have had the pleasure of being present at the former similar sutertsiuments of this company, will need no vord of commendation from us to assure them hat the Guard will fully sustain their well ‘arned reputation. We therefore predict for hem no lack of bright eyes and merry oearts @ the occasion. Cou. [comuuntcaTeD. W. D. Wattacn, Esq.—Dear Sir: My at- } tention has been called to an article in the Or- gn of yesterday, which says that I was initi- | ated into the Order of Know Nothings in this city, and held office in the Second Ward Coun- | eity, &c. Permit me through the columns of your widely extended paper, to vindicate my- self from the falsities and calumnioes therein expressed. ‘atly contradict the assertion that I ever hgyve been “duly initiated in Our Order,” and nfidently assert that “Our Order’? cannot produce any one of their functionaries who officiated in the initiation of which they speak; neither cau they name the day, the year, the official Know Nothing, or Kuow Nothing of any degree, who eaw, heard, or is in any manner personally cognizant of the fact that I ever qwas initiated. Therefore, the immense labor of excommu- nicating me from ‘Our Order’ and placing me among the heretics, is a work of supererc- gation. My position in the Organ office, as clerk, I obtained over the claims of many prominent Know Nothings, simply because the owners believed from the testimonials I produced as to capability, &c , that I was qualified to per- form the duties of the post I solicited. I was , personally unknown at that time to any of , them, and coming, as they did, from nearly every Ward in the city, it is highly improba- ble that Icould have been a member of “ our Urder’’ of the Second Ward, or any other couneil without the knowledge of the great ‘: Virginia Prophet,”’ or some other of their number. While there, I worked for my sala- y alone, without endorsing the principles of * Our Order,’ and often proclaimed it, which I can substantiate if necessary. I never desired or sought admission into ‘Our Order’? and tha knowledge I obtained cf their proceedings was wholly voluntarily on their part The above facts being true the charge of perfidy and betrayal of confidence is absurd and ridiculous have takea this manner though reluctantly? of placing my true p tion before the public, totally disclai having taken any obligation to support ‘our order,’ and trusting in theirjadgment if the receive not the interpretations of ‘ false prophets, "’ to acquit me of any betrayal of confidensg in the matter.
