There are likewise counterfeit Site cane bills on the Augusta branch of the Bank of the State of Georgia. The engraving is rather cuarse, and the r is thick and yellowish. The hilapelphia Sun, of Monday, says: “An extensive business was done on Satur- day last in passing $5 counterfeits on the Me- chanics’ Bank of this city. The notes are admirably executed, and well calculated to deceive the Laced 55 of paper money. Two oung men, nal Jas. Noble aud Robert illes arrived in this city on Saturday even- ing, in the cars from Lancasier county, and alighted at the Market street Bridge, when they walked into the city, passing off a num- ber of the counterfeits. “ They entered six stores between the Bridge aud Sixteenth street, Berhating clothing aud dry goods, for which they tendered a counter- feit $5 ateach place, receiving the change without creating the slightest euspiciou. The seventh place entered by them was the dry ood store of Mr. Chance in Market Streat, tween Fifteenth and Sixteenth streets, and this gentleman being an excellent judge of prernd serg a arrested Hlilos and sent him | to the Ninth Ward sta-ion house, when officers Clapp and Piss went to the store, and took the prisomor to the station house. On Monday evening they were greeted with a full house, aud the genersl coneur- renee of opinion was that they are, decidedly, ass amusers. In fact, the repeated ap- plause of the auditory was confirmatory of Ri this fact. They are refitting it from stem to stern and adorning it with everything suitablein the way of vrnament and tikely to conduce tothe pleasure and com- fort of those who may patronize them. Their eareer af managers of the Holliday «treet thea- tre has been a3 eminently succesful as their tours with their famous compauy of Ethiopian serenaders. Munder, professor of this - popular and polite art, will resume the daties | of bis school on Thursday afternoon, at his Assembly Hail, (adjoining the Star offies,) which is one of the largest, most beautiful aud conveniently arranged rooms in Washi with the addition of two dressing and supper rooms. His unbounded success in attracting to his late May festival, at the Naticnal The- atre, upward of four thousand persons, is an evidence of his enterprise, as well as of the popular approval of his professional duties Among the lovers of heaithful and innocent amusement, dancing has becee an **instita- | tion;’’ therefore, ail who will indulge inthe rt should be weil accomplished; and mone is better fitted te impart the necessary instraction, including botu esse and grace, than Professor Mander. Conporatioy OxGax.—The jvint recolution by the Board of Common Council about We months ago, proposing to give to the “ American Organ’’ newspaper the printing of the proceedings and laws of the Corpora. | tion, was taken up, last night. in the Board of | Aldermen, for consideration During the discussion, Dr. Miller, of the Second Ward, argued that the printing should be given to the lowest bidder, and that it should mot be conferred upon the ‘ Organ,’’ merely | because it expresses the views of a majority of the members of the councils. Mr. Bayly proposed an amendment to the joint resolution—that the printing shall be given to the newspaper having the iargest city cireulation; but this was rejected; and the measure, as originally produced, was passed. Lecrure.—Miss Nivison, a graduate of the Philadelphia Female Medical College, will deliver, this evenins, at Carusi’s the introductory lecture to the secon on anatomy, physiology and hygiene; the first having been exclusively for the benefit of and before ladies. We have reason to believe that the lecture will be attended by the most in- telligent and respectable families of this city, including both sexes. It is said, by ladies who were present during the first course of lec- tures, that Miss Nivieon bas aii the requisites o€ a popular lecturer, and that ner manner of imparting instruction is of the most pleasing character. . Expuaxatory.—We published an item, yes- terday, stating that one of our citizens recent- ly got into alittle difficulty, and that for a scrimmage and the fading of a pair of shoes, be was beld to bail. Lest it may Le supposed that there was 3 dishonest intent on bis part, it is dae to state that he enjoys a good charac ter, but will oceasionally indulge in a heavy dose of alcohol. Court ov Ciaius.— Yesterday, Chariecs Nay- lor was sworn au attorney of this court. Mr. Thompson, of Washington, asked lsave ef the eourt to amend the petition in the case ef MoElderry, in which the court had deliv- ered the opinion that it was defective; which was granted. The argument ia the ease uf Letitia Humph- and others was resumed by Col. Auderson, oer. , Who had not concluded his re- marks when the Court adjourned. Wasuixcron Natioxan Moxuwent.—Tbe ruins of the Ancient Carthage are to be com- memorated in the Washington Monument, fur it appears that a beautiful block of marbie, from the ruins of the Carthage, for the Wash- Monument, has been presented by Mr. David P. Heap, sonof the late consul. The Dlock is of variegated red and white marble, and was cut from one of the columns of the temple of Esculapius. Srvevcan anv Paixecv. A considerable majority of these are claimed by the Democrats. There is no means, however, of ascertaining whether the commit tee is net egregiously “sucked in’’ in being induced to calculate on many of thore who will mount the ears with shouts on their lips for the Demveraey. Tux Graxd Assiversaty Bart of the Northern Liberties Fire Company will take lace this evening ut the A-sembly Room: Tuisians Avenue. We doubt not there wili be a full attegdaace of both sexes. Nearly the entire issue has been brought in, and promptly ex- changed by the assistant clerk of the corpora- tion, Major Jewell. Busiaess upon our canal is slowly but stead- ily inereasang.
