WHOLE NO. 7009. MORNING EDITION—TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1855. ~ ‘THE ELECTION TO-DAY. POLLS OPEN AT SUNRISE . «.. + 6:35 4. M. POLLS CLOSE AT SUNDOWN... . 4: TWELVE THOUSAND CANDIDATES IN THE FIELD Appearance of the Metropolis the Da: Before the on, . Names of Candidates for State, County and City Offices. THE POLLING PLACES. VOTE EARLY. THE DAY BEFORE THE ELECTION. WARE CANDIDATES ON CANVASS—DISPLAY OF BAN- NERS AND POSTERS—TRE AMBRICAN EAGLE, THE SHIP OF STATE, ETC.—ESLECTIONSERING POETRY— EULOGY OF A CANDIDATE, ETC., ETC. ‘The various political parties are making extensive pre- paratlons for the approaching contest. They have “hung out their banners on the outer walls,’’ and are awaiting ‘the result of the contest with the most intense anxiety, For some of the offices there are at least twenty candi- “Gates, eech of whom is sanguine of success, and all of ‘whom are ready to sacrifice their own interests by ac- cepting offices for the public good. Every means have been resorted to by these and by their frionds to secure their election, and money expended with a liberality that knows no bounds. All the old principles by which par- ties were formerly known have been completely lost sight of in the general scramble for office, and the great object of candidates at present is to get themselves ‘on as many cifferent tickets as possible, without regard to party. It is quite common now to find one man nominated by the ditferent varieties of shells which once constituted the democratic party, by the reformers, the republicans, the liquor dealers, and a number of others, to all of whom he has pledged himself to support and carry out their principles. Pledges are so plenty now that they may be had for the asking, and politicians were never ‘known to be so lavish of promises and offices. As for bflices in the gift of candidates, they bave increased far ‘beyond all former precedent, for at least s dozen have ‘doen offered to every one that is really in existence. It 4s astonishing, too, how many honest men ani unmiti- gated scamps have been put up at this election, and if everything said against them isto be believed, there is dardly one who is not guilty of every crime except that ‘of murder. Cards have been published in the daily ‘papers containing the most violent assaulta on political op- ponents, and warning the people against voting for them as the most dishonest of men. Then again, on the other side, those same opponents are lauded up to the skies and their virtues set forth at length before the eyes of the wondering reader, perhaps in the very same paper. But the papers are not the only medium through which the virtues and the.vices of rival candidates are set forth: virculars, handbills and posters of the largest dimensions stare at you on every side, from the walls of buildings, lamp posts, trees, awning posts, and wherever a bill can be posted, eulogizing or condemning friends or foes. Here, for instance, is one which will at once attract the ‘attention of the passer by with the glaring letters that ptand st its head, cach one of which is at least a toot long. It commeaces somewhat after this fashion:— “ Who is Col. Lakimin? Aman who needs only to be ‘known to be respected—a man who is beloved in private fife, ard whose integrity and many virtues place him above reproach. He has consented at the carnest re- “quest of many friends to stand forthe office of Inspec- tor of ach boxes, and they take pleasure im recom- mending sim as an honest and reliable man—as one who possesses ihe ability to perform the onerous duties of ‘that oftice, and who will not prostitute it for the evil and malicious purposes of designing politicians,’’ Then fol- Jows 4 Song list of names of “reliable citizens,’ whose ony interest inthe matter is their strong desire ‘to have good men clected to office.”” Occasion is taken to throw out some insinuations against the character of the opposing candidate or candidates, all of whom, it is inti- mated, are either incapable of performing the duties of the office or are unworthy of the peoples confidence and support As may be supposed, Dill stickers are doing a heavy Dusiness and are in great demand all over the city. They are employed night and day, and are among the most valuable {tiends and worst enemies of aspirants for popu- lac favors. This may appear strange, but it is s fast nevertheless. We heard of one who made twenty dollars during the last three or four days by posting his bills over tlore of rival candidates wherever he could find them; but he afterwards got a pretty severe beating at the hands of some ‘strikers’ who detected him in the act. Some of these bills are rare specimens of the art of printing, und are got up with the most stricing effect. They are generally embellished with ships of State, ‘farms of mechanics holding hammers, temples of liber- ty, horns of plenty, (horns by the way are plenty these times) bee hives, and American eagles innu- merable. Never before was the eagle rade to perform such heavy duty--be is exhibited in every position, and his services have been enlisted for the occasion by all parties. Then there are the humorous and the satirical posters, which are intended for all who are fond of a joke, and the grave and dignified for those who think the ‘lection is no joke, One of those which cate under our notice was evidently intended to use up the Know Nothings, and if it don’t succeed then there is no virtue in posiers, ‘Sam’? was represented by a remarkably lean specimen of humanity, pursued by a figare with the long tail and horns which are supposed to belong to a certain well known character, while a number of jolly looking individuals are looking on and enjoying the race ‘wilh the most intense deligat. The temperance men ‘aie not so well represented on the walls as they were at the last election, and ia the course of our peregrinations over the city, we did not see a single ban- ner with the name of a temperance candidate inscribed on it, It is to be regretted that the politictans, with very few exceptions, have abandoned the poetic muse, although they appear to bave cultivated the other branches of the fine arts most assiduously. There was one couplet which should secure for the author an undying fame, It reads a4 follows, and we think the lovers of poetry will agree with us in the opinion that in its line it stands unequalled: “<1 do not look for office in expectation of booty, For if elected 1 will perform my whole daty.”” It will be perceived by critical readers that there ares few slight defects in the metre, and that the rhyme is not quite so perfect as it might be; but to such we can only ray, in langusge somewhat like that ased ty the celebrated dir Lucius O’Triger—when sincerity guides the pen, be is @ brate who would quaw@ With the ay > \ue banner line there is not 60 great an exbibition as we bave seen at former elections, but what there ir, iapretty good. It must be remembered, too, that the westher has not been very favorable for the purpove, ‘and that a large number were blown down a few days age. The most extensive, varied and artistic assortment 4s to be found in Broadway, where nearly all the tickets are prevented for the instruction of voters and the eit cation of the public generally. Within a few doors of Maiden lane the banner of the city refurmers has been given to tae breeze, and we perceive that the broeze hav mace quite a big hole init, This ts rather invaspictous for thei ticket; but they ‘mast not be discouraged. There is no spread eagle, no ships of State, no horns cf plenty, no temples of liberty—nothing but the oaxes of the candidates aad the offices they all ex pect to get. At the head of these is the following, in ‘slinple, modost,"unaseuming letters, which weak eyed however, would bare some aiMiculty in seeing:— povevenrerere ® vote: 5 Ne penne penne SU SICWPAT REVORM SOME Baree ce reel eevee tne TOAPVEUELE EEO D Tie next to this, as you proceed further up Broadway, te the American banwer, a pcndsrous affeir, aad almost fu man-of-war. It is also large enough for the we!ns estitute © pow en aru! tshroeats, the only orna oy voters may know to what party thy belong, the follow. ing announcement is made at the heasl:— rereceeese. AROOCOLOLIOELE DELO ES AMERICAN NOMINATIONS, COOOL OE TONEERODIIIIOOIE DODO LOUEDOOOLDOE IEEE EL @ Passing further up Broadway, we find a large number in the vicinity of Grand street. There was one some where in the region of Leonard street, but it appears to have gone in the wind. It was, however, the only really artistic affair which has been got up. The name inscribed upon it was Harry Howard, who proclaimed to his friends in large letters that he was up for the office of Street Commis- sioner. Harry was reprecented as large as life, all but the legs—the banner not being quite long enough, those very useful appendages are cut off some where about the knees. The amputation of those, however, seems to have little effect upon him, as he is supposed to be run- ning as hard as he can for the house on the other side of the way, although if he makes as little progress in his race for the office as he does towards it, his chances are rather poor. In one hand he holds a fireman’s trumpet, to remind his friends of the services he has performed in the fire department. Broadway House and Constitution Hall have both dis- played in front of them two immense banners. Opposite the former is the banner containing the names of the candidates of the whig party. It ix decorated with an eagie and ship of State, and is very neatly got up, with colored letters, At the head is the following, setting forth the particular section of the whig party to which the candidates belong:— MOO LO LESLIE LOCO COLOLE ELLE DDLELELELELEEDDE EDEL : REGULAR DEMOCRATIC WIIG NOMINATIONS. Aeeverrecseosorecnensesnsteetneeen tere ereee ‘The heading of the banner opposite American Hall, ix as follows:— nee eeeenoes, POLICE CE OLE LERDODLE LE TELE: AMERICAN STATE TICKET, OOOO LE LODE LO ODOOLOLE NIIIPEDILEDLELEDELDLEDEDODE DY Constitution Hall, whish is above Bleecker street, and which was the scene of the late Whig State Convention— the convention which repudiated every attempt at fusion —wakes a liberal display of canvass, and presente the can- didates under the following head:— SOCIUEPOLOCEEODOOSE LD OEEOOOODEDEDLOU LODE HEHE REGULAR NATIONAL WHIG NOMINATIONS. aeecararenenenencneeneeneenteenene lies ee hese etienete ‘The voter is further reminded that this is the na- tional whig ticket, by a likeness of Henry Clay, which ornaments its centre. The friends of Mr. Leffingwell are determined to keep his name before the people! for we find it no less than twice in Broadway. His name is displayed on banners painted with all the colors of the rainbow, intended evi- dently to express the hopes which his supporters enter- tain of his election. The banners exhibited in the Bowery show a great falling off in that locality in the love of the fine arts. ‘They seem to be utterly ignorant of the existence of the American engle, the ship of Stote, ond all the other patriotic and electioneer- ing emblems. They are evidently modest men in the Bowery, and are content with simply giving the names ot thelr candidates, and the parties by which they have been nominated. The first banner is suspended across the street near the theatre, and bears the following inscription :-— PE POLE LE DEOLOL DDDEDL ODED LODPEE DE IDODIE DONE: UNITED DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION. YOR COMMISSIONER OF REPAIRS AND SUPPLIES, NATH’L 8. SELAH. Ores eeeeseeeeenene netPtesPeeaebe at Lebe PPT IODE ET EED Alittle above this is another, equally unpretending, which reads as follows :— enenee, POMEL IIOOE LODIIIOLEDDOLELEDOLEDIFEOELEDOLELEDE r REGULAR DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION FOR SHERIFF, JAMES C, WILLEIT, 3 POOORTIOI DOL EDDDDOLILOLESOOLLOLOSEDEDLIDIDEDLOLEEDODR Then above this aguin, near Grand street, Mr. Shepard has hung out his banner :— pecnecees nnceeerrenreeese se: DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICAN NOMINATION. TION, en eg. SHEPARD. ODO DOODLOUDYEREDODO LODE LEDOLODE PEPE DPSODE DE DEED: From the foregoing display of banners, it would appear that the Bowery isin the sole possession of the demo- eracy. In Hudson street there is a grand amalgamation of banners of ail parties, and the walls are literally covered with posters, Candidates, not content with having their naines presented on the full ticket, have had them print- ed separately, with the office for which they are nomi- mated, and posted up in the most conspicuous places. In Chatham street the display of banners is not so great this year as at the last election. Whether the candidates are less liberal in their expenditures in thot district, or they are satisfied with the publicity they receive through the medium of posters and handbills, we are unable to determine. There were, it appears, about haifa dozen altogether before the late storm, bnt it made wild work with them, and those that were blown down were in very few instances put up again. Before you enter Chatham street, the first banner you see ix that exbibited on Tammany Hall, covering nearly one- third of the front of that building, which presents a long Ust of candidates for the support of the people: — a 7. amen ARE CITY AND COUNTY Ticker REPUBLICAN a James ©.
