ExpLanation.—We stated, yesterday, that ‘the Marion Rifles, in worthy imitation of the Franklin Fire Company and the Americar Rifles, intend, next week, to give an excursion *| down the river—the proceeds tobe applied to the relief of the Portsmouth, Gosport, and Norfolk suffersrs by the yellow fever.”’ A member of the Marion Rifles, however. has informed us that their benevolent enterprise is not in ‘imitation’ of the other companies named, but was projected at least as soon as those of the Franklin Fire Company and the Marion Rifles. We willingly make the de- sired explanation; bat, at the same time, would say that all of them are equally entitled to public commendation for their benevolent efforts in beha'f of the distressed. Tae ALarM or Fire, near 11 o'clock last night, was caused by the burning of a stable located in the First Ward, and belonging to Mr. John Wilson. We are informed that : 2v- eral stables have been burned on and near the same spot during a few years past. The fire- men were on the ground, and went specdily to work. But with all their efforts, they could not save the building, a frame one, from de- struction. Taisties.—The act making an appropria- tion to defray the general expens>s ot the Cor- ration for the year ending June 30, 1556, contains the following item: ‘‘ For the extir- “pation of thistles. one hundred and five dol- faa? Firta Disrrict Potice.—Roberta Knox- ville, profanity, workhouse 60 days; Malinda Jenny, do., fine and costs; Elizabeth Clark, colored, assault, dismissed. At this time there are abundant crops of the thistle in various parts of the city, but, as they arc not “‘ripe for the harvest,’ the work of “extirpation” has been delaycd! Instead of ‘“extirpating’’ the weed before it comes to weed, and thus effectually destroying it, the work authorized by law is not commenced ‘until <fter it comes to seed, which are naturally deposited forthe next year’s growth. It seems Pay conceded by the law-making power that the annual appropriation must continue to be wade, in all time to come; and hence, to ex- pend the money, there ms¢ bo thistles to up- quot, to cut down, or, in the legal phrase, “‘ex- irpate '"? e repeat, the work is always delayed until they come to ceed, inztead of its being com- o— as soon asthe weed peeps into day- ight. it may be that the thistle is considered or- namental during its vigorous bloom, and that the “extirpation’’ is perfoimed in its decay- ing state merely because the law calis for the @ppropriation ! _ Watcu Retvens.—Margaret Ring, profan- ity, workhouse 60 days; Chas. The advertising columns of the Star will give to persons abroad some idea of the num- ber and extent of the excellent seminaries of learning with which our city abounds. The first on the list is the Georgetown College. This time-honored institution is situated upon the high ground immediately on the western extremity of our city. A more appropriate spot for such an institution could not, proba- bly, befound in the Union. Its elevated po- sition affords an unobstructed view of nearly the entire District of Columbia, besides por-, tions of Maryland and the Old Dominion. From the upper stories and dormitories of the m buildings, the National Metropolis, with Capitol, President's House, and other public buildings, Navy Yard, Arsenal, and Washin:- ton Monument, together with portions of the high lands of Maryland and Virginia, a part of Alexandria, Arlington House, Analostan IMand, and some twenty miles of the beautiful Potomae, lies full in view. Indeed, in every direction in which the eye is dirceted, the most gorgcous and romantic scenery, natural and aicdficial, lics spread out before it in per- feetly enchanting loveliness. As au evidence of the superiority of its location, in point of healthiness, but a single death has occurred among its students since it was founded. Of the efficiency and usefulness of the faculty, it is useless for us to say anything. The scores and hundreds of brilliant scholars which have been sent forth from it to adorn the va positions, both in church and state, me yculty. and tillers of the soil,at home and b has given to the Georgetown Colleze faculty a world-wide fame. q We learn from the Georgetown Advocate tuat Wm. H. Edes, Esq., has resigned bis seat in the Board of Common Council. The tine for an election to fill the vacancy, has not yet been made public. We have atso hear rumored that James Goddard, Esq.. will more than likely be the Kuow Nothing candidate for the vacancy. We regret to learn that the call upon our citizens to assist the suffering at Norfilk aud Gosport, has not been responded to as was hoped and anticipated. Up to yesterday morn- ing, but a very small amount indeed had been contributed. This omission, we are satisficd. does not grow out of a want of benevolence on the part ef our people, but forgetfulness. We, therefore, renew our notice of last week Ali sums of money, whether large or small. left with Mr. W. Ht. Edes, will be promptly ferwarded to the above named points; and we sincerely hope that our citizens generally will come forward immediately in their usual libera! spirit, and contribate an amount which siall do credit to themselves and the place of their residence. ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’’ Flour is held at $$.75a$9, as in quality No change in grain market. Specrator. Artack sy Hienwaymey.—As Lieut. Bush- xed W. Hunter, U. S. N., was returning to ‘bis home in Alexandria county, last night, about dusk, and near the junction of the Alex- zadria and Columbia turnpike, two ruffians tuddenly made their appearance; ore of whom seized the bridle reins, while the other, calling ‘uvon him to “ stop,”’ jumped into his carriage. The lieutenant seized his gun, the pointing of which at the highwayman on tue ground caused the scounarel to relax his hoid; and then, with the butt of the gun, he knocked his companion from the carriage. The villains took to their heels, finding that they had en- countered an antagonist equal to the emer- geney. Arrangements have been made to be there at 3 o'clock, p. m., when those who wish to partake of tne hospitalities of the mansion, the invigorating bath, or the deli- cacies of the season, can be gratified. But, apart from the means of enjoyment thus af- forded, the proceeds of the exeursion are to be applied to the relief of the Virginia suffer- ers by the ycllow fever, a fact that should not be forgotten. Quick Reters.—A very well-dressed man applied at the guard house Last nizht for \dg- ing. He was accommodated, and this thorning di charged at the usual hour. Without being disposed or deeming it necessary toge inte the particulars of the case, I can say that the astonishing resalts that have been pro- duced by the use of that medicine on a member of my own family, and under my own observation and superiatendence, after the skill of the best physicians had been exhausted and all the usual remedies had failed, fully justify me in recom- mending its use to all who may be suffering from that dreadful malady. Ido not mean to say that it ts adapted to all constitutions, or that it will afford the same relief in all cases; for, of course, 1 can know nothing wbout that—but of what I have seen of the effects, I would not hesitate to use it, in any and every case of Scrofula, with persons for whom I felt an interest, or over whom I could exercise influence or control.
