EVENING STA DEATH AND THE MISEB. BY HARTWELL RICHARDSON ‘On an iron box with belts and locks, Sat a miser counting his store ; Death being a wing, for the fun of the thing Flew in through the bolted door, But the eager miser was none the wiser, And he never dreamt of harm ; ‘Til: death draws near with a wicked leer, Aad seized the miser’s arm. ‘Now the miser knew death by his noisesome breath, And his grim and ghastly emile ; But objecting to go to the world below, He asked if he’d wait awhile. “No! there is a ship at sca belonging to me, with glittering gold, 10) give her to you, and cargo 100, If you'll just fet go your hold !” “No! why, then ll give, if you'll let me live, ‘The whole of my broad estate ; Pve silver and guld in sums untold, gems and plate ; But my soul, you kuow—its lost if I go— No, » youll nox refuse 7? Death shook his head, and smiled as he said, “A miser has none to lose.”? A REMINISCENCE AND A Morat.—The Boston papers contain the announcement that the mansion of the late Professor Webster, at Cambridge, Mass., is to be sold. What reflections is this simple notice calculated to cail up! A house, famed for the most «legant hospitality, where were wont to mect the beauty, the taste, the fashion, the intellect of the land; where every accessory to comfort, to enjoyment, to happiness, was at hand, where all the amenities of the family and Social circle seemed to blend with even more than the usual felicity that crowns the most favored lo: of mortality! And now, where are the inmates whose pres ence, in the day we are calling back from memory ofthe past, was a porns ie? We will not go beyond the suggestion of the reminiscence. It prompts reflec- tion that it will do no harm to any to dwell upon. There is a stern, ‘sad, sorrowful lesson in it that may be laid to heart by all We have often thought while ing to the once was and the is now of that mansion, of Wirt’s toach- ing end eloquent description of Blenner- hassett’s “ Beautiful island on the Ohio,” as being peculiarly appropriate to the subjects of our reminiscence. He reared there a palace, and decorated it with romantic embellishment of fancy. A shrabbery that Shenstoae might have envied, blooms around him. Music that might have charmed Calypso and her nymphs, is his. An extensive li spreads its treasures before him. A Philosophical apparatus offers to him all the secrets and mysteries of nature. Peace, tranquility, and innocent shed their mingied delights around him. And, te crown the enchantment of the Scene, a wife; lovely even beyond the sex, and graced withevery accomplish- ment that can render it irresistible, had blessed him with her love, and made him the father of her children. In the midst of all this peace, this feast of the mind and ofthe heart, the destroyer comes. He comes to turn this paradise into hell. Reader! This destroyer was «Mammon, the } erected spirit that fell from heaven.” Moctnr Vernox.—The ladies who baye taken charge of the scheme to bu Mount Vernon, the residence while liy- ing, and the tomb when dead, of the il- lustrious father of his country, have put forth an eloquent appeal to “the Daugh- ters of Washington” to interest them- selves in the matter. We are pleased to see that the ladies of Richmond are moving in the matter; they could not have a nobler mission. The tomb and the home of the father of his country should belong to the citizens of his na- tive State. Success to their patriotic en- deavors say we — Richmond Post. During our collegiate course, owing to sedentary habits, we became quite dyapep- tic, and were very mach troubled with vertigo For more than twelve years after leaving coll! we were laboring under these two afflicuons. In whe spring of 1853, our general health became so delicate that it was with great difficulty we could attend to the ordinary duties of our profession Everything We ate immediately turned acid, our digestive or- ns became wholly deranged; losing as it seemed to us, all their activity and vitality; we were con- stantly depressed ia spirit, our energy almost for- sook us, and nothing but necessity urged us on to action. We had taken strong medicines, observed great icujarity.in our diet, and ail to no al ap We despaired of ever recovering our health, when a female friend of ours imporiuned us to get a bottle of Hampton’s Vegetable ‘Tincture, assuring us that we would find great relief from its use. We briefly replied, “we would not give a doliar for all the Tinc- ture Hampton ever made, so far as Our own individ- ual health was concemmed.”? We had no faith in it nor any other medicine in effecting a cure on us. In the kindness of her heart, however, without con sulting us about it, sie sent and got one bottle and urged us to accept of it, and for her sake, as it could not possibly injure us, to use it according to direc tion. For the high regard we had for her and ber act of kindness, we promised todo so. And witti- out exageration we can truly say that before we had used the contents of one bottle we felt like a new man We used, consecutively, from ten to fifteen bot- tles. We were afraid to give it up, fearing our old diseases might return. Since then, our di ive clear, organs have been uniformly correct, our he: and so far as our labors, toils, liabitities, responsi- bilities, and worldly cares will allow, our spirits have been buoyact, and-we eat what we please, and as muc we please. and when we please— and all is well. For the sake of the afilicted we make this statement, hoping that ethers may find the same relief from its use that we have. It should be heptin every tamily. Such was my condition for twelve months that the physicians and ail who saw me said I must die. While in this condition, I was carried to watering places in Virginia, Tennes- see and North Carolina, but wasnot benefited by any water to which | was taken. While on my way home, I stopped a week at Rutherforcton, a em | village in North Carolina, to try the effect of some Chalybeate water in that place. About the jest of the week, I went into a drug store w get some, medici ef child and myseif. There ge physicians in the store, and one of them seemed to take some interest in my case, and, after asking me some questions, said he had been a dyspey and had been greatly bene fitted by the use ef “* Dr. Hoofland’s Gennan Bit- ters?’ prepared by you, and be insisted that I would uy Bitters He also calied the next day at my room, and insisted so h that | would try them that] asked him to ectise one bottle, He did it, and | commenced taking it as directed, and { do say I was more benefitted by it than all the water and medicine | had ever trken. Afler reaching home one of my neighbors cam to me fur a prescription and medicine, (he a dy+pep- tic,) and 4 gave him nearly all the Bitters I bad left, which effected much good in his case.
