oO) eee aS SS =e EVENING STAR. Local Intelligence. Cooxixc wit Gas.—Mr. Willard, of the National Hotel, has in operation, at his popu- lar establishment, a simple ee for ig bah oy ject more bar, in ing on the subject, says: “One of my neighbors, who has tried it, ex- presses himself in great praise of its econo: and suceess; and a beefstsake from Mr. Wil- Jard’s gas gridiron was served to me, presery- ing its juice, and exquisitely done. Mr. Guay, of the Monument House, who is one of the best judges in the country of the culinary art, has adopted it, and recommends it as a fael and labor saving invention, which is des- tined, I believe, to confer untold benefits and comforts on all classes, and should, as it must, amply rewsrd its public spirited inventor.” The bars cf the gridironare hollow. To these the is communicated by means of a guita- ean tale attached to the ordinary jet. In these bars are small perforations, the ges e:- eaping through which is ignited. presenting parallel strips of flame. Over this a plate of ribbed iron is placed, and the article to be cooked laid on, with the result above doscribed. In fact, cooking in any of ite styles can be ex eouted by this simple arrangement, and ata cost cheaper than by any other description of fuel. The cleanliness of the operation, and the preservation of the swoetness of the meats, to say nothing of the convenience of the ar- rangement, must certainly recommend it to general favor. Tas Franxxurs Target Compaxy.—This novel association of cur young citizens pa- waded yesterday forthe purpose of Raving their firs: target practice. They were accom- panied by excellent martial music, attached tothe Marine corps, marched well, were out in good numbers, considering the threatening aspect of the weather, and attracted cousider- able attention from our citizens ‘here were five prises to be shot tor—two for the officers, a@splendid gold pencil and a very beantifa! aetring. Tho gold pencil was won by Capt A. Tate, and the ring by Lieut. Williamson The prises for the non commissioned officers and privates consisted of aeplendid zo!d locket, efered by Capt. Tate; a silver eup, offered by Lievt. S. 0. Eckloff, and a handsome gold ring, by Liext. Evans. ‘The first was wou by pri- vate C. J. Canfield; the second by private Spring; the third by private Crampsey. The leather medal, :Le prize to the poorest at- tempt, was awarde:! to one of the corps, who odtained mcre applaure ‘kan ary one of the bet- ter marksmen. Dianottcan Vittaisy —On H street near Fifth lives an old man named Grushon, whose honesty and industry have gained for him respect of all his acquaintances. By pra- dence and hard labor he has managed to pur- chase for himself a horse and furniture car, which have been his principal means of sup- port. He kept his horse in a stable near Fifth and H streets, but it seems the unfortunate beast, by stamping on the floor of the stable, annoyed the neighbors. Last Thursday night some one went to the stable and sealded the poor beast badly on one of his shoulders. Not Satisfied with this specimen of his malicious propensities, the person returned again the following night and sealded him again on the other shoulder. We nave no idea of the pun- ishment proper for a person guilty of a crime of this description Aside from the injury done to the poor old man, such treatment of a dumb animal should ontitle the wicked party to a long term at the Aard-st labor in the penitentiary. [comauntcatED A Caxprp Coxression 1s Goop ror TH Souv.—Dear Mr. Editor: As you seem to have acted as Fathor Confessor of all those true penitents who have generously resolyod to expiate the sin of Know Nothingism by tears and mourning, [ wish to avail myself of the absolving power with which you are invested, acknowledge my fault and disclose the reasons of my conversion Many object to the Know Nothing Order, because of its proscriptive character; but [I object to it, and have separ ated from it, because it is not proseriptive enough My oase, perhaps, differs a little from any that has yet como under rour knowl- edge. You will remember, Mr. Editor, that st the first clection in our city, in which this Order was triamphaut, the policy of the cor- porate authorities, as announced by leaders of the party, was to have none but Native Americans in their employ, and to rid the Metropolis of forcign influence. Being a na- tive myself, this announcement was received by me with joy, as I thought of the delightful change that was about totake place. Do this, geatlemen, I said to myself—rid us of foreign influence, and yeu consummate the attractions which our city holds outasaresidence Crime will be unheard of, and the auxiliary guard and rolice functé officio. The very trees on our Avenue will grow more luxuriantiy—there will bo no such thing as dust—property will advance—the Corporation debt will be paid— marketing will te cheap and money plenty— @ perfect willenium, But, alas! I have wait- ed iu vain to see !he promise fulfilled. To be- sure our friends have done something. They have decided to remove Roche and McCormick as a tax on the community—they have taken possession of the Washington Monument—they have poisoned one dog, (and some horses— £4.,) because, besides being suspected of having Scotch terrier blood in his veins, he was undoubted)y nothing more than a Popieh spy. But all this is very little. When I lock around me and see our public works monopo- lized by foreigners—our streets opened and graded, and our buildings erected and deco- rated by the same, I find that eur city author- ities have done nothing towards redeeming the ledges which they gave upon their election. by, Mr. Editor, I thought that the glory and the profit, too, of these works were henceforth to belong exclusively to Americana. How ig it that native shovels and pickaxes are not en- gaged in grading our streets? How is it thet Dative chisels are not employed to prepare the stone for our edifices? Lexpected our Know Nothing authorities to do this, but they have failed. They have failed to relieve our city of foreign influence, and the consequence fa that Property has not risen, nor has the corpora- artment of|tion debt been paid. Bat I am told that grading streets acd erecting public buildings are not important offices. Are they not, though? Who knows that these foreigners, under some vile command of the Pope, have not laid mines and pitfalls in our public streets, or placed springs or infernal machines in our public buildings, with which they in- tend one day to destroy the lives of the native American citizens of Washington. I have weited in vain to gee these Dutchmen and | Irishmen turned oat, and Amerioans appointed in their stead. I am disgusted with the bad faith of the Know Nothing party; I have left a3 it were by the acolama- tion of the commanity, will bid me “Go in Repextancs. Jonuw 14, 1855. Many persons in our community do not seem to be aware of the fact that the laws reg- ulativg the Post Office Department require the postage on all letters tobe paid when mailed, otherwise they will not leave the office where mailed, until sent to the dead letter of- fice in Waehington.
