EVENING STAR. Local Intelligence. Tax Do Noraixcs.—A convention of the members of the Independent Order of Do Nothings was held last night, at the Park Hotel, in accordance with previous notice. The ‘er | was large and enthusiastic, with a fall attendance of delega The procesd- ings were private, not -ecret; but in order that Ro misrepreeentations might by a our special tter was provided with accommo- dations, for which As returns hia thanks to those who conferred the favor upon him for the benefit of the readers of the Star. There was a brisk and animated contest for the office of president, and, after at least twenty ballotings, the young zentleman who had, at an early bour in the afternoon, treated without stint a large number of his friends to the liquid and solid luxuries of the season, was elected, and acknowledged the compli- ment in a strain of eloquence pesuliarly his own. Vice presidents encugh to fill the seats of the Georgetown and W arhington line of omni- buses, and two seorotaries, were elected, bat. for ressons sufficient for the convention, we are denied the privilege of spreading their names before the public. Occupying an elevated seat, on the platform, we hed a fine view of the delegates assembled. ‘There was the elegant gentleman, dressed in the height of fazhion; wearing, too, “the looks’ calculated, bis own opinion, to * kill” many a susceptiblo lass! He rested his chin on the ivory bead of bis cane, and supported a dignity that adraitted of no supr. riority. Beside him sat a youth, with a cigar is his mouth, pale and emaciated, seeming to take no interest in the proceedings, but care lessly enj ying the fumes of his tobaceo, which he architectural'y emitted in spiral columns In the same neighborhood, were a dozen or more chewers of the Indian weed—men who certainly “made their mark” (on the ficor ) Anu old bead appoared hero ard there in the crowd, but it was not‘ acrown of glory” to the possessor, for the reason that it was not “found in the way of rigteousnezs.”” Youths of sixteen, cled in the best brosdcloth, with jong golden watch-chains, were as mannish as those who had numbered twice ag many eummers; in fact they could swear as loudly and as offensively as any of their seniors; the latter oftentimes checking the juvenile preco- city in this respect. White kids were plenti- fal; and we noticed amorg those who wore them, several double-barreled revolvers, such as are made uss cf to stare ladies out of coun- tenance at the o-pe-rah. Doubtless many an “anxious mother,’’ at that very moment, wag aware of the absence of ber tender offspring. for whom ‘“-home” hae no charms, excep! when the exchesuer needs replenishing from the maternal coffers. Aod there, likewise, was the lad, verging on man- hood, whose noge described a curve, owing to his continually turning i: up in contempt of honest manual toil! ‘ibe sweat of labor never bathed his face, nor were his ficgers ever soil- ed by a vulgar contact with the implements of mechanic skill. Priding himself on his shell, his mere external—an upstart, presumptuous and conceited—he had probably neglected to improve his mind and store away solid learn ing te anzwer the valuable purposes of life. ‘There were married 23 well as single men in the motley convention; & strange assembly, representing all the shades of Do Nothingiem, while crowds of ragzed boys vainly attempted to thrust their heads in at the window! But to the business of the convention, or, rather, the movements with thet intention. Eeveral propositions were offsred, looking toa platform of principles, but these were, after debate. in which the fre-eaters and fire- drinkers indulged, defented. 1% waz con- tended, on the one part, that to do something would militate against the Do Nothing policy This was the view entertained by the majority. And so the meeting broke up in diserder, and the human fragments of the contention re galed themselves atthe bar, and indulged in various little private sports, peculiar to them- d that the “ Beau’ came limping along in time to witnogs the breaking up. but nct too late to ring in fer a drink and a cigar. asnineton City Biste Society —The following are the names of the cflicera recent ly elected, to rerva during the ensuing year : President —Jobn P Ingle, E=q. Secondly, the Allies made rapid advances, and seized and retained the Russian liues on the Tohernaya, without mach loss—the Russians retreating to the hills. Thirdly, the Allied secret expedition has ob- tained easy possezsion of Kortech, where they Row command the sea of Azof, in which are now fourteen allied steamers.
