EVENING STAR. Govensevr Monets, of Morrisannia, a gen- tleman of birth. education, and the most lofty bearing. on being asked for his definition ef “A Gendeman,” replied by repeating the psalm: “Tis he whose every thought and deed ~ a rule of virtue moves; Vhose generous to} disdains to The thing his heart dligrowes, we “ Who never did a slander forge, His neighbor’s fame te wound ; Nor learken to false By malice whispered round. “« Who vice, in all its pomp ai er, Can treat with just bors igs pay And pi-ty, though clothed in rags, Keligiously respect. “ Who to his p'ighted word and trath Has ever fi-mly stood ; And though te promise to his loss, Ue makes his promise good. “ Whose soul in usury distains His treasures to employ Whom so rewards can ever bribe Th. guiltless to desucy.” Tt isstated that thia psalm wes copied by Thoreas Jeffareon, in the emaliest hand and peatest manner.into a Common-place Book, which be wasin the habit of frequently con- sulting. eee eee A Faexcn Woman.—The French wo- man’s characteristics are generally that she is unexeeptionably shod; that she wears inimitable gloves; that she has a toilet of two colors; only with a distract- ing way of wearing it; that her manners are bewitching—full of small grades and delicately shaped coquetries, and never wanting in the nicest jation of ex- ternal proprieties, to which her flirtations are always subordinate—that she has a as facility of walking clean rbrough the dirty streets of Paris, and : lious a knack of holding up her dress with one-hand over the left hip; that she has a bewitching habit of mis- taking her friend's husband for her own. These are popular characteristics, and few people aliow her any other; but those who know her know that other thoughts besides dress and flirting work beneath those smooth bands of glossy hair, which look as though they had taken a life time to bring them to their present high condition of polish and mtricate arrange- met.t, and that the hands in their close fitting gloves cau do something better than make up caps and crotchet purpos- es; that che is not only an agreabie wo- man of scciety but sisoa careful house- keeper, an allectionate mother and 2 sub- missive wife. A erench woman is always noticeable for her clean linen—cuffs ‘and collars al- ways white and fre pat then she works them herself, and thus procures another large feminine luxury at smg'l cost. A Porratte Bart —An_ ingenious Frenchman, a resident of San Francisco, has conceived & novel expedient for carn- ing a livelihood. He ridcs around through the outer streets of the city upon a spe- cies of water cart, to which are attached several zine bathing tubs—the whole be- ing drawn by four stylish looking horses. He knocks a: the door of every respecta- ble house, and inquires if any of the in- mates wishto bathe. When he receives su aflirmative answer, he detaches onc or more of thetubs, carries them into the house, and fills them with water from his eart. He then waits until the bathis over, aud, having received his pay, re-ad- justs the tubs and starts again upon his route. Jackson, Philadelphis—Dear Sir: i have been a subject of Dyspepsia, in its worst form, for the jast five years, Such was my condition for iwelve months that the physicians and all who saw me eaid [ must die. While in this condition, I was carried to the watering places in Virg: Tennes- see and North Carolina, but was net benefited by any water to which I was taken. While on my way home,i stopped a week at Rutherforton, a sma} village in North Carolina, to try the effect of some Chalybeate water in that place. About the iast of the week, I went intoa drug store to get some medicine for my child and myseif. There were several of the village physicians in the store, and one of them seemed to take some interest in my case, and, after asking me —, einen, _ he had been a dyspe and been greatly bene- fitted by the ure of Dr. Hoofand’s German Bit ters,” prepared by yu, and he insisted that I would try the Bittera le also called the next day at my room, and insisted so much that I would try them that fasked him to get me one bottle. He did it, and f commenced taking it as directed, and { do say { was more beventted by it than all the water and medicine I had ever taken. After reaching home one of my neighbors came to me for a prescription and medi¢ine, (he a dyxpep- tic,) and i gave him neariy ai! the Bitters I left, which effected much good in his case. He has often called on me for more of the same kind of medi- cine, saying he was more benefitted by it than any other he bad taken, but I have not been abie to get aay more for him or myseif 8 » there ore, please ship me a dezen or more az soon ax pos- zble, Respectfully yours, W.
