Our confidence in the honesty and purity of American citizens in the exercise of the elec- tive franchise, would, on ordinary cceasions, induce us to deprecate any exhibition of dis- trust; but when itis Known that the Know Nethings have secret caths and pledges at war with the freedom of the elective franchise, and that the purposed atrangement excluding all inepectors not Know Nothings, was deliberate- ly made, we must be excused for saying that we prefer an opportunity t> detect fraud if attempted. Tt always tells the Truth—(i/ide the Vir- Stnia Blection.)—Our talented, amiable, cour- ‘cous, entertaining, enthusiastic, agreeable and truthful neighbor has its manufactory of “eccks acd bull.” in full operation just now, the election being so nearathand. Three or four of the most expert and ambitious workmen in the roorback line are evidently at it in its ‘astory with sleeves rol’ed up and perspiration Tolling down. We beseech them to do nothing which may possibly lead to a sarrender of the great advantage which taeir conduct gives them, when compared wih thas of the portion of their opponents kept by the eotorie of our talented and irath- ings of Washington. [i has its origin wacily in the conviction rest- ing on the minds of cur talented, chivalric and truthful ne!ghbor’s cc‘erio, that the ont- ‘ages perpetrated upon tho rights of their opponents by their agents in the councila and tweit band of ruflisos and rowdics in the streets, aze sufficicat to justify a resort to aby tacans for self defence. Foréign Paupors.—Our ialented and truth- ful neighbor yesterday published an article complaining tha! at this time the streets of Washington are more crowded with foreign paupers than ever before. Tae writer of it or more tbean doublo, as there never Was a ‘ime when thers was iess street begging in our cily than at present. Butif his essertion iz true, it merely amounts toa strong censurs of the Know Nothing aathori ties of Washington, whose duty it is to clear the streets of any such personas. Land Cffice.—Tho following is the amount of work done in the Gencral Land Office during the foar weeks ending May 26, 1855: Number of letters examined and enjered upen registers, 2,291; letters written, 2,242; pages of revord covered therewith, 1.591; patents— engrosged 5.922, rczorded 4792, transmitted 9,269, examined 42,740; entries posted in tract bocks, 24,621; acres of iorip iseued, 10,316. Stay at the Pol's!—It is to ba hoped that on Monday next, as many respected and re- spectable citizens of both’ parties as possible will remain at the polls. Oar talented and truthful neighbor, by ‘its footie! stories about depositories of arms and ordétin g out of the miitary, is doing its Lest fo generate riots at the election. The best way to prevent them ig for many respected aud respectable citi- “ it by every means left them, it is only | zens to remain constantly und the polis. ‘Their presence will, deabineshpecste to pre- serve the peace. The Subterfuge.—Great (mock) indignation seems to be excited by the attempt made by the Board of Aldermen to seoure the presence of an anti-Know Nothing in the room during the ting of the votes ni x? Mondhy evening. tee 1 in rate here and every- where allo’ parties to be repre- sonted among the commissioners of elections, that the Board of Aldermen were ashamed te alicw them to be composed entirely of Kaow Nothings. These immaculate commissioners consider the attempt to have any others than Know Nothings present as a slur upon their integrity—as an intimation that they, per- haps, would count and report the votes more fairly in the preserce of their opponents than in secret conclaye. They have guessed right the first t'me. As the move wes first made in the Board by a Know Nothing Alderman and supported by Know Nothing votes to some extent, it must be presumed that the motion and yote arose from mere considerations of common decency, and a respect for the Know Nothing party. But the community have other reasons for such amove. They know that that the only eect of the presence of an Anti Know Nothing Would be to detect fraud if attempted, and that no one of common-sense would object to his prosence. except for the purpose of securing the opporturity of commitiing & fraud with impunity.. We bave it upon excel- lent authority that, when “ mon seek darkness rather than licht’’ it is‘ because their deods are evil.’’ Men do not seek to conceal their virtuous and magnanimons actions—2onceal- ment is for quite another purpose. Lt is useless to talk, and be iadignant about the integrity of men, with such premonitory indicationsupon them. They will not betrusied and do not deserve confidence, and the open ticket will be resorted to to guard cgainst tho ivauds which ee2m to be deliberately in- tended. The driveling about the administra- tion seeking to control the votes of clerks, and the ranting about the integrity of the com- missionerz, will net prevent the citizens of Washington from looking after their rights. Men who intend to act honestly in public matters, have no cbject'on that the public shall inspect their doings. Know Nothingism vz. Principles —A Pro- tostant clergyman sends us the following: “When we get p ion of the Fedoral Government im 1556, assuredly wo will, there will not be loft in office ore man outsids of our order "—Lztract from an argument of Ino.
