———S” EVENING STAR. liyy; [POR THE STAR. THE LOVED ONE OVER THE SEA. eary of waiting—of waiting , "Vor loving tones spoken to me ; And my spirit is piaing—still pining For love lit eyes o’er the blue sea. ‘There are music strains on the air thrilling, And hauntingly sweet though they be— Far sweeter to me is the trilling, Of a loved abscat voice O’er the sea. I am weary of listening—of listening For bounding steps coming te me ; And tears— I tears, will be falling, While they tarry eo long o’er the sea, There are sot, gentle steps lingering near me, Steps light as the morning to me ; But L list for the sound that can cheer me— A firm, springing step o’er the sea. Tam weary of weeping — of weeping OPer hopes withered by ma dened: Of a fate that has cruelly banished A war, loving heurt o’er the sea. Then hoW can my brow be unshaded ? ‘The world is all sadness to me; Por a brave, tried, and true beart is drooping Par over the blue, sunny sea! Bat I am not weary of praying— Of praying, beloved one, for thee ; For i know thou «rt with ime in thought, love, 1 know thou art weeping with me. And ic I ne’er gaze on that form, love, Nor hail thee from over the sea; °Tili death stilis this true heart’s last throb, lev, Ite prayer shali be offered for thee. Jessie. Wasnixeton, D G 1856. — Josep Heme. — This distinguished man, the tidings of whose death were brought to us by the steamer Pacific, was born at Montrose, Scotland, in the year 1777. Ie was educated to the pro- fession of a surgeon, and in about the year 1798 entered into the service of the East India Company. By dint of un- wearing application, he uired a tho- rough knowledge of the Indian dialects, and amassed a fortune. In 1808 he re- turned to England, se _ ere tour of Europe and Egypt. In e was elected to Patient; and he has held a seat every year since. He was remarkable for his energy and persever- ance, and has always been noted as a reformer of abuses, an enemy of monop- oly, and a friend to the extension of polit- ical franchises. In financial ability” he was surpassed by few. At his death he numbered 738 years. {> Bulwer leads a bachelor’s life in Paris, and many singular stories are told of his eccentricities. He is at the age of fifty, the same dandy he was when he wrote ‘‘ Pelham,” and really makes up exceedingly well. His fortune is very large, and he performs many acts of ua- ostentatious charity. He is a fatalist, and believes firmly in certain periods being hazardous to his destiny. One day, full of gloomy foreboding, he was seated at his solitary breakfast table, when the new housekeeper, who hap pened to bear a striking resemblance to his wife, entered,— Sr,” said she, “I shall do every thing to give you satisfac- tion.” «* Will you, madam ?” cried the Baronet, and ringing the bell, he ordered the valet to pay the housekeeper a year’s wages, and her passage to the most dis tant place she would consent to go. The lady happened to have a daughter mar- ried to a New Zealand Chief, at Loorako, Bay Islands, and hither she was dis- patched at Balwer’s expense.
