Taz Orestxe Nicur at res Propez's Tus aTee.—There was a very satisfactory as well as eatisfict audience at jfe~ Hall on Satur- dav evening last, to witness the representation of th ious Family, and Raising the Wind, by the company, as arranged for a permanent fummer’s season in Washington. 2 Serious Family was very fairly represented indeed, with Wanuaagie exception. Mr. Weaver's Aminidsd struck us as an entire misappre- hension of the et As — and de- signed, the par: is tbat of « whining demure bypoerite, sof: and Sad in bis looks and ac- tions. As played on this cecasion, it was in too many passages that of a boisterous buffson. Mr Weaver wore mvs‘acbios, too, and in that way entirely destroyed the effect of the tesily capital maoner in which be otherwise dressed the Wo thas epeak plainly of bis abort eomings, to warn him against spoiling wha’ jises to be a very sueces:fal season at that ouse, by a failure o2 his part to recollect that there is no othercity in the Union wherein the audierce in the theatre is so invariably composed of persons of good taste—of those who have been accustomed to refined society, and therefore nauseate ail vulgarisms or 8 want of attention to the thousand trivial things on the stage, which, taken together, early determine the ques‘ion whether a stock company is to be popular, or simply to be en- dured for the sake of witnessing the perform gare Ploying, baer: them. ljoward aud Tyson are young, agree- able. and hardsome, and in Mrs. Delmaine and Mrs Charles Torrens they evidently made very favorabie impressions upon the awlierce, one andall. They strove to please, and suc- eoeded. as yourg and handsome women never fail t© do in Washington, whotry. There was adegree of modesty pervading the acting of both these young ladies, cminently lady-like, and therefore agreeabie. They have a com mon fault, however—that of nearly all young actors and actresses—that is, in indulging in stage pronunciation and intowation. Their aim should be to read their parts precisely as they would deliver them in animated conversation in potite society. Oa the whole, however, :hey made most favorable impressions, and strike us az likely to become permanent favorites in this city. Mr. Walco't’s Murphy MeGuire was a capital impersona ion of the gay, agree- able, accomplished. and chivalri: [rish gen- tleman—worthy, iodeei, of the sehool in which he graduateé; of Burtou’s Theatre, in New York, where genteol and light comedy is inva riably better put upon the stage than any where else in Aworica, except in a single other House. The after piece, Raising the Wind, was as well played as ever before in this country, we care not where We have seen it represented a hundre! times, ia ‘wenty or thirty cf the leading theatres of the country, and we never before saw playing tegether sojzood a Jeremy, Sam,and Plaiowsy ihe restgof the charac. ters of the piece were fairly repdered. Mr. Norton’s Saw would procure him an engage ment toplay “ Yo: kehire’’ any where, whiie Mr. Newton’s Plsinway was a: ood a render- ing of the unsophisticated aud somewhat eras- cible old gentleman, as we ever saw any whe: These two performars. a: iLas Mr Wajeott, are destined to be great favarites in Wash- idgton; imacmuch as they are evidently versa tile, aud are also exceedingly careful ia ail the business of the staze. We have to say to the managor, that if he will insist oa faultiess dressing on his st even oa the part of the men sent on to handie chairs and table-, and that every one appear- ing upon it shall oe perfect, and atcend strict- ly to the little things in “the business” bo is« ned to have a very profitable season at Tron Hall; for his troupe contaius the nucleus of une cf the best genteel and light comedy companies now playing together, this country, To-nigh: they perform of “Ured Up,” with Mr W tt as Sir Charles Coldstream The cast for the entire pi very fine effsctually. ‘Lhe afterpiece is « The Prac ieal Man.” a mst laughable hi: at tho extrava- gsccies of the times. New York, March 19 —The Northern Light, from San Juan, with later California dates, now cUiming up the bay, brings intelligence of several failures. She brings $92,000 iv specie. No Senator has yet been elected, and there is no present prospect of a successful ballot. {SECOND DisPatcs } The Northern Light rea:hed her dock a little after 10 o’olock this morning. San Franciec> dates of the 26th were brought brought by the Northern Light, and 260 pas- sengers. Business was entirely prostrated by the eu- Pension of five heavy banking houses. The Bws of the suspension cf the St Louis house of Page & Bacon reached San Francisco on the I7th, and caused a great run on the Culi- fornia firm. ‘he house met the ran, and paid out half a million. A meeting of merchants and bankers was held which declared the house soand, This restorcd confidence, and affairs seemed to wear a better aspect ; but on the 22d, however, Page, Bacon & Co. sus pended, and were followed on the 23d by Adams & Co., Wells, Fargo & Co, Robinson & Co., and Wright's Miner.’ Dopocit The exeitement was interse. Adams & Co. closed all their branches, without paying a dollar, except in San Francisco, where, on the 221, they stood a rua of $200,000, Wells, Fargo & Co. closed in San Francisoo; but the:r country brauches paid as long as their ccin lasted, and were still paying out as fast as coin could be obtained in exchange for dus! and bars. The house had announced that they would resume in San Franciszo on the 20ch. It is feared that Adams & Co could not resume under sixty days, if at all. Page, Bacon & Co. will probably resume in a few days, depositors having granted time on 3100000. The aesets of this house are large. These failures caused the detention of the steamer until the 26h. It is rumored that there are also heavy failures amongst theme - chants in San Francisco, but of these there are no confirmition. Owing to the great scarcity of water but little gold hes been taken from the mineg; but heavy rains eommenced on the 25th, and etill continued when the steamer left. There has been no election of United States Senator. ‘The joint convention adjourned sine ce on the lith. The laat vote stood 63 to 44; those voting in the minority were principally the friends of Dr. Gwin.
