SPIRIT OF THR MORAINES PRES? The Intelligencer to-day is loud in its Praises of the capital scheme cf Mr. Senator Johnson, of Arkansas, forthe erection of three United Statess Territories out of the three most civilized nations of American Indiaus, the Cherokees, Choctaws and Creeks, which bas ained at length repeatedly in the editor regrets that Mr. J. did mot move somewhat earlier in the matter, as had he done 60, it is hia (the editor’s) impres sion that his bill might have superceded that (to him) bili of abominations, the Nebraska Bill. The Union entertains the impression that victories gained only by a harmony of ha- treds alone, cannot profit the victors for an instant, even; and insists that the Demos racy must bury all their discussions if they would triumph at all in the future. The Union declares, by the by, on the authority of the Boston Post, that many colored men in New York voted the Know Nothing ticket, if but by way of showing contempt for the abo- litionists. The Sentinel argues strongly against the system of emitting paper money on deposits cf stock. which the editor regards ag but an edi- torial eviien indebtedness. PRRs AL. Rev. XZWS ARD GOSSIP. Conscience.—The recent political canvass in New York has demonstrated past peradven- ture, the real value of that “conscience” which our cotemporaries of the New York Tribune have been vaunting for years past, as fit to be put far above the Constitution and laws, in the respect and obedience that should be accorded to it. Itis, in truth, the most “unconscionable’’ exactor of disreputable and disgraceful shifts from men with pretence to perconal character, ever permitted to have influence in public affairs in a free country. Thus, in its service, in the two weeks prior to the..election, the T'rijune was made to tell most infamously villainous falsehoods against tiany of the gentlemen, personally, who were candidates for high places in opposition to those instanced by that journal. Messrs, Seymour, Wood, Barker, Ullman, and a dozen others, were accused by the Tridune boldly and with detailed statements of time, place and circum- stance, of most henious crimes. Indeed, the stranger, on reading that paper, would draw the conclusion that in this country men were universally selected~ as candidates for high office in the people’s gift, for the possession of Personal characteristics which in any other civilized land would surely consign them to prison as malefactors. We need hardly say that these accusations were false—we may add willfully false; as no sane man could read them, one and all, without concluding that they were deliberat2- ly concocted only to serve a partisan political end. We saw it stated in a New York paper, that the conductor of the Tribune, on being appealed to to publish a refutation of one ot these stories of his journal, admitted that the refutation in question embraced the truth, but bolded added that the truth was just what he did not want to publish until after the election! It is not wonderful, therefore, that honest persons turn away in disgust-at the pretence that conscience is the guiding inducement for politicians of the Tribune school, to justify notorious and willful violations of the Consti- tution and laws. However, the people of New York have rebuked this so-called ‘‘conscience”’ in this election, in a maaner which bids fair to check i's insolence and demagogism here- after, as well as to rescue the Whig party of the North from the deep gulf of isms in which its temporary leaders have been plunging it deeper and deeper in each succeeding canvass for the last five or six years This New York election shows that ‘‘conscience,” after the fashion of the Tribune’s, faiis to pay. So its mercenary pretended devotees will, of course, abandon it, like rats deserting a sinking ship. A large wing of its honest followers, it seems to us, must now realjse that in ts service they are but doing the work of and relying on the “Father of Lies’’ himself, if they are not so deeply plunged into the most disgusting polit- ical Jesuitism ever resorted to to effect a rep- rehensible politicalend. Otherwise they will surely understand that that cause must be a bad one, indeed, which is only to be sustained by such wholesale and barefaced lying, and mendacity in insisting upon lying statements for the truth, as has disgraced the columns of the Tribune in the last two weeks. The Fourth of July Dinner in London.—We have, up to this time, refrained from com- ment'ng upon the recently published corres- pondence between Messrs. Sickles and Pea- body, relative to their almost-a-fracas over the dinner given b7 the latter to the Americans in London upon the last anniversary of our na- tional independence. Our purpose has been te obtain isformation concerning the unwrit- ten facts involved, so that in what we may publish on the subject, we may do exact jus- tice in the premises. We have obtained it, and we do noi find, we must candid!y confess, thatit reflects credit on George Peavody, Eq. The Americans in London had arranged to have their annual Fourth of July dinner, mak- ing it. as usual, wholly an American affair. Mr. Peabody, an Armericaa by birth, of great wealth, but notcriously Anglicised in atl his interests and sympathies, desired, himself, to give the entertainment, and by agreeing that it should be in all respects an American pub- lie dinner in honor of the anniversary of our national independence, he prevailed on the gentlemen connected with our Legation in Loudon, who were, of course, active in ar- ranging for the usual public celebration of the occasion, to give that up, and adopt his in its stead. ‘To that end, before consenting to do 80, they stipulated that seats should be pro- vided fur all respectable Americans in Lon- don, whether acquaintances of Mr. Peabody cr not. That the President of the United States should be toasted befure the Queen, and that the “Star Spangled Banner’ should be sung without mutilation. ‘hat is, without omitting the third verse, that might be offensive tu Englishmen who were expected to be present. The acts of Mr. Peabody, in agreeing to these requirements and substituting the entertain- ment at bis expense for that contemplated at the expense of the Americans generally, who were in London, made his dinner easevitially a public one. As such, it was becoming that its main features should be wholly American. Mr P. was under every obligation that should govern a gentleman in euch a case, not vy any act of his to divert the entertainment fromthe express end the Americans present had, in assembling atit. He, however, chose to act differently. He had the Queen toasted before the President of the United States; had our national anthem mutilated fortear its so dear- ly-cherished historical reminiscences might offend the ears of the Englishmen around the table, and made his speeeh a mere occasion for toadying the Queen, the royal family, Britain, her interests and prejudices. Mr. Sickles, our Secretary of Legation, re- garded these acts ot Mr. Peabody as a breach of good faith on the latter’s part, and as in- volving a deliberate insult to the Americans present and the glorious occasion that had called them together ; and, accordingly, in- digrantly expressed himself to that effect He subsequently wrote these facts to the Boston Post, which drew from Mr. Peabody a reply in attempt to justify himself; in which reply he denied sume of the allegations of the Secre- tary of Legation. This led to a cor:espond- ence between them, in which it is made mani- fest that the allegations of Mr. Sickles were true to the letter, and that Mr. Peabody es- sayed to escape their force by the silly expe- dient of playing highfalutin. We (the senior editor of the Star) confess to no particular admiration for Mr. S. Yet in this controversy he seems to us to have borne himself not only with dignity and propriety as a map, but ag all true hearted Americans would desire one in his position to act under such circumstances He may feel assured that the sentiment of his countrymen is with him with great unanimity indeed in this matter, despite the invidious efforts of those to ridi- cule him, whose sentiment of hatred to all connected directly or indirectly with the pres- ent administration is so intense, as that they are willing to decry their own nationality in ODD FELLOWS’ HALL.
