Todos se expresaron con palabras de sincera condo- lencia por la muerte del torero, al que algunos consideraron a- migo. Orson Welles dijo una vez de “Manolete”: “Viendo torear a ese famoso torero, que los ame- ricanos llamamos erróneameríte “luchador de toros”, se da uno cuenta de que, aparte opinio- nes de gusto, el toreo es arte, arte en toda su expresión, ya que tiene mucho de ballet y mucho más de hombría.” Orson Welles se encuentra en Inglate- rra, y seguramente habrá sen- tido la muerte de su amigo, con el que pasó buenos ratos, vién- dolo torear y conversando con él sobre varios aspectos de los toros y del arte. Lana Turner, que en México conoció a Manolete tuvo unas palabras de recuerdo para el hombre que según élla: “supo jugarse la vida con valor y la perdió en la más alta tradición de la torería”. En Mesa, Arizona, el equipo de la High School de allí, quie- nes defienden el campeonato del Estado que ganaron en la temporada de 1946, añadieronse otro triunfo ganándole a la Bo- wie High School de El Paso, Texas. 14 para 0. Ayer jueves por la noche, se efectuó un encuentro entre los “Caballeros” de la Santa María y los Conejos de Mesa, quienes defienden el campeonato del Estado, derrotando a. los “Ca- balleros” 12 a 6. Este encuentro fue muy reñi- do, siendo que los “Caballeros” llevaban la delantera hasta en el último período cuando Mesa hizo sus 2 touchdowns. LA Sonia Henie Vuelve Al Cine A Colores HOLLYWOOD— Los ejecuti- vos de U-I están tratando de! convencer a Sonia Henie de q' acepte un contrato para filmar “La Condesa de Montecrista” en blanco y negro. Aunque la es- trella ha aceptado la filmación de esta película, insiste en que| para llevarla a la práctica debe ' hacerse a colores. En caso de q' no se acepte su petición, Sonia no llevará adelante su compro- miso verbal con U-I, que mar- ca su regreso al cine en varios años. > graciosa, me decía por teléfono “Siento mucho la muerte de “Manolete”. Pero me había prometido verlo en la pri mera ocasión que se me presen- tase.” Jack Cummings, el productor de MGM que actualmente está en México, también habrá sen- tido la muerte de “Manolete”, puesto que su espíritu america- no aprendió a conocer a los to- reros, como artistas geniales y deportistas valerosas. Olga San Juan, Lauren Bacall y Humphrey Bogart y otros va- rios artistas, manifestaron su sentimiento por la muerte del torero, de la que se hablaba en forma sorprendente, como si se tratase de un artista famoso de Hollywood. Era tán famoso el torero, que en más de una oca- sión se me había dicho si, co- mo hispano, no me daba ver- guenza no contarme entre los que ahora podrán decir, para justificar sus conocimientos del arte de Cúchares: “yo ví a “Ma- nolete”.
