Hamm Breiving Co., St. Paul, Minn. . THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE—JUNEAU, ALASKA FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 1951 * Trio of Sunday DriversTop Americans ; By the Associated Press Talk about traffic jams. | American League standings is jambled mess of Sunday drivers | with everybody horking the horn | to go by. Only one game separates | the speeding Yanks, Red Sox and Indians with eight weeks to go. The the fifth time in 12 days the top three are only one game apart. Boston won two, Cleveland won one and the leading New York Yankees were shut out by Detroit, 6-0. Even Chicago picked up ground and now trails the Yanks by six games in fourth place. It's just the opposite in the Na- tiorals, where Brooklyn opened up a 10-game gap on New York by bomb- ing Pittsburgh, 10-5, while the | Giants took it on the chin at Chi- cago, 6-3. The Phillies in third place, 15': games out, edged Cincin- nati, 7-5, and Boston and St. Louis played one of those ‘suspended games,” called to let the Braves catch a train to Chicago, with Bos- ton leading 7-3 in the last of the ninth. They’ll complete it Sept. 13. Probably the top thrill of a° busy day was Bob Cain’s remark- able relief job for Detroit at Yan- kee Stadium. The curve-balling lefty saved Al White’s shutout— and first win—with a brilliant performance. Here's the picture: Detroit led 2-0 in the seventh. The Yanks had three men on, nobody out and the count was two-balls-no-strikes on pinch hitter Johnny :Hopp. Then Cain replaced White. Three Curves Cain’s first pitch was a ball. He followed with three curves to nip Hopp on a called third strike. Then Billy Martin and Gene Woodling fanned on sweeping hooks to re- tire the side. The slim lefty also blew down the next six men in order in the eighth and ninth, striking out two more. Heartened by Cain's job, the Tigers tore into Spec Shea for four- in the eighth, three of them ' unearned because of errors by shortstop Martin. Art Schallock, the $50,000 purchase from Holly- wood of the Pacific Coast League, | ‘was the starter and loser, White | and Cain allowed only three hits. Pinch Homer Boston popped up with a new a pinch homer with the bases full assuring the Red Sox of; their sec- ond game sweep over St. Louis, 11-6. They manhandled the Brownies in the opener, 12-1, behind Ray Scarborough’s effective eight- hit pitching.’ Johnny Pesky hit a homer in that rout. Maxwell, a rookie recently recalled from the Louisville farm, had hit two pinch homers before yesterday. But this was the big one, coming off Satchel Paige in the seventh to change a slim 7-6 lead into a solid five-run margin. Larry Doby hit the longest homer seen at Washington since Babe Ruth hit one some 50 feet back of the centerfield fence and into a tree in 1923. Doby’s cleared the 35-foot wall, 408 feet from the plate in dead center in the fifth inning with Dale Mitchell on base to help mail down a 5-2 It happened again yesterday. For | slugger in Charlie Maxy@l. + He hit | triumph. Fleet Jimmy Busby hit a 10th inning homer for Chicago’s 4-3 vic- tory over Philadelphia. Big Gus Zernial smashed his 24th for the A's. Litfle-known Gelfer Leads Pro - Chicago Tourney CHICAGO, Aug. 3 — (#— Little- known John Barnum, with a back- nine Tam O'Shanter score of 29, led a well-jumbled field into the second round of the $15000 All- American pro golf tourney today. Barnum, 39-year-old 220-pounder, swiped the All-American spotlight from police-guarded Lloyd Man- grum yesterday with a sizzling 35-29—64 round, eight under par, for a three-strike lead in the quest for a $2,250 top prize.
