Biological warfare is the proper name for “germ warfare.” Scien- tists divide this type of warfare into three parts. They are: attacks with “living agents,’ attacks with special kinds of poisons called “toxins,” and attacks with special kinds of chemicals known as ar- tificial harmones. The first type uses bacteria and viruses, while toxins come from bacteria. The third type can be called “growth regulators,” Germs have played a part in all major wars. So far, no one has used biological warfare on a large scale but small-scale attacks have been tried. Although disease can spread . quickly, most: outbreaks move quite slowly. Today the United States has a nation-wide system set up to prevent and control dis- ease outbreaks of all kinds. ‘There is proof that our system is effective, according to the booklet. Diseases which caused wholesale epidemics only 50 years ago are now very rare in this country. The big danger from biological warfare lies in new methods of spreading old diseases. Germs can be spread in artifical mists called aerosols. Although aerosols may never be used, defenses must be prepared against them. Other attacks in this type of war- fare can be made by using special bombs carrying biological warfare agents and saboteurs could pollute food and water supplies. Different germs may be used for different |purpuses depending on whether an Thor Sundberg is stopping at thel | NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL AND [¢ PERSONAL PROPERTY .
