PAINTING, WIRING IN PROGRESS ON DOUGLAS BRIDGE| Rejuvenation of the Juneau-Doug- las bridge is well under way, al- though recent rain and wind delayed progress in rewiring and re- painting. Jerry McKinley's three-man crew has been busy since the middle ci the month on the wiring job, ex- pecting to be through now in a week, weather permitting. The McKinley Electric Company | was awarded the Bureau of Public Roads contract on its low bid of $3.- | 1021.25. The only other bid was sub; mitted by the Alaska Electric Light 'and Power Company, which esti- | mated $3,244.25. | According to Chris Wyller, BPR | district engineer, replacement wir- ing for navigation and obstacle | lights has been urgently needed for some time. No other illumination i being wired. The wiring project is primarily to bring the bridge up to Coast Guard and air safety requirements. Due to short circuits, the marker lights have been out from time to time for several years, and com- plaints have been registered by both the Civil Aeronautics Administra- tion and the Coast Guard. This is the first rewiring since the bridge was built by the Al Road Commission in 1934, It was} transferred to the Bureau of Public Roads in 1943 | A foreman and six men of the An- | derson and Runnels Company, Seat- tle, started work Wednesday on the contract fcr repainting the bridge.
