The ordinance also states that! the sales tax will be discontinued when the city’s bonded indebted- | ness has been paid off. The bonded indebtedness of the| ecity at present amounts to §956,000, including school, streets, and sewer | bond issues, but not including the| city’s share of the recently ap-| proved $750,000 school district bond ! issue. When asked what income could be expected from such a one per- cent sales tax, Mayor Hendrickson said the income in Juneau from the Veteran Sales Tax amounted to| $140,000 per year. | He said that at present about $55,000 per year of the city’s in- come goes toward paying on its bonded indebtedness, $20,000 of that amount to pay the interest. “You know that it is more econ- omical to pay off debts” he said. “The sooner the bonds are retired, | the less interest must be paid.” The sales tax ordinance must be approved by 55 percent of the city's voters before it becomes law. URGES TOLLEFSON WASHINGTON, June 15 — ® — Rep. Tollefson (R-Wash) says that unless Congress extends the law permitting charter of war-built vessels to private operators 11 cargo vessels serving Alaska must be re- | turned to the government in 16 days. The special law under which the; Maritime Commission chartered | vessels to operators of Alaska ship- | ping lines expires June 30. i Tollefson urged the House Mer- chant Marine Committee to approve | legislation to extend the law. | “I'm supporting this extension of authority to charter vessels operat- ing in the Alaska trade because I realize there is a shortage of this| type of cargo ship used between the| United States and the Territory,”; Tollefson told the committee. “I firmly believe that regular service between continental United States and Alaska is absolutely essential in the interest of our na- tional security. “If these ships are withdrawn' from service on June 30 it will im- | pose a hardship upon the residents | of the Territory and will stop the! flow of supplies to canneries in| Alaska.” i FROM BREMERTON | Mrs. Frank Bart Barber of Brem- | erton, Wash,, is a guest at the Baranof Hotel.
