What do they represent? What have they done? What do they have to offer us?” | Well, briefly, T am one of the candi- | dates- for Commissioner of Labor: |RAY BEACH, of Juneau; 43 years of age; a 12 vear resident of Alaska; married, the father of four children; a retired enlisted man from the U. S. Navy, in which I served over 22 { years, including all of World War (I. I am a member of the Alaska Territorial Employees’ Local Union No. 1279, of the American Federa- tion of State, County gnd Muricipal Employees, which is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor. I have filed for the oiiice of Commissioner of Labor because I am interested in good government, because I was formerly connected with the Territorial Department of Labor, in which I worked for nearly two years, becoming quite familiar with the normal functions of that | Department in matters pertaining to | labor relations, the protection of our workers, and particularly of our women and children, in industry; ithe enforcement of our wage pay- ment laws; benefits for injured workmen under our Alaska Work- men’s Compensation Act; the train- i ing of our youth under apprentice- ship programs which will enable them to obtain gainful and con- | structive employment in Alaskan | industries and businesses, and lhel compilation of statistics relative m| cost of living and wages and other | matters which are of invaluable assistance to employers, labor or zanizations, governmental a;,enclc;; and other professionals and private | citizens interested in the develop- | ment of our economy. Numerous em- | ployers and labor organization of- | ficials, and hundreds of workers can | testify to the fact that the cor- | respondence files of the Department of Labor are replete with testimon- ials to my interest and participation | in these matters, and especially to ; my efforts and efficiency in the set- tlement of labor disputes between unions and employe:s, and of wage disputes between employees and em- 1 ployers. ¥ ‘ ible pri- i ber of the Republican Party, I.felt com- pelled to file for the D(fm which I seek—that of Territorial Commis- | sioner of Labor. I feel,:in fact I, gnow, that I can give you a more | diligent, a more intelligent, a more efficient, a more effectiv; and yet of the Department of Labor than nas pre- | vsailed in the past. I believe that i administration such as I ofler‘ My friends, as a res] {you is absolutely necessary in an axpanding and fruitful Alaskan eco- | aomy because the affairs of this Department, particularly in the field 5f labor relations, in tHe.mainte- nance of industrial harmony, are inextricably interwoven With that sconomy. In this connection, I in- vite your attention to the labor| planks suggested by me to the re- cent Caucus of the Republican Par- ty at Juneau; which planks were | adopted by the unanimous consent of that convention for mcurporauoh, in the 1950 Platform for the Re-, publican Party of Alaska: “Mainte- nance of a full-time, intelligent and effective administration of our labor laws for the benefit of both labor and industry in order that industrial neace may constantly prevail. The support of preferential employment for resident Alaskan workers in both private indusiry and governmental service.” Ladies and gentlemen: If you vot- ers of Alaska see fit to return me victorious at the ‘polls in the Prl- mary Election on April 25th, and in! | ployess, or between unions, I shall | the General Election of Odtober 2nd, ' you may rest assured that as your - Commissioner of Labor: (1) I shall employ competent and efficient pesonnel in order that the functions BOAT_“LASSIE", 46ft x 13 ft, of your Department of Labor may founf’ SRR A8S R, ‘Cieneral be carried out strictly in accordance | Motors Diesel, 40-watt Fisher with the laws governing. this Depart- | ment; (2) I shall do my utmost £ | fairly and impartially preserve the | industrial peace, and in the event of disputes between unions and em- Phone, iron mike, galley on deck, halibut winch and roller, com- plete troll gear, would make good seiner, 3 years old.
