The young couple are Mr. Mrs. Ted Bank, Jr. He is tl of the former University of Idaho football cocach who is now President of the Athletic Institute of America at Evanston, IIL | His wife is the former Janet Fow- Fowler, of St. Joseph, Mich. Both attended the University of Michi- gan. They spent the last 20 months hopping from Aleutian island island. Bank is a bkotanical anthro- pologist from the University of Michigan, and was field director of a Na sponsored scientific tearh which explored most of the major islands of the chain the past sum- mer. Not Stepping Stones “Greyer heads than mine will adad up the evidence,” the 26-year-old scientist said cautiously on arrive?, “but I think our material, when coupled with all that collected earl- ier, will show pretty conclusively |that the Aleutians never were man's stepping stones from Asia to North America. “Instead, it seems more likely that the Asian migration came across Strait, drifted down the ceoast, and part of it moved back westward along the Aleutians.” He reported discovery of an an- cient wcoden mask typical of south- ast Alaska Indians, but never re- ported before in the Aleutians. He unearthed it while exploring a cave on Kagamil in the Island of the Hour Meuntains group. “It at least indicates some cou- nection between the Aleutians and mainland people, but we'll have to wait until we find more of them to ke positive of its place in history,” he said. He s id indications that early moved from the Alaska mainland out, along the Aleutians. Ancient village sites now Leing unearthed are buried much deeper on the eastern end of the chain than on the western islands. This would indicate they were cov- | cred by succeeding villages before the western groups. there were Married Here his wife d a Navy re- secarch team, flew over the entire chain, discovering at least 15 an- cient village sites from the air. They | were marked by different vegeta- | |ticn patterns and colors. The Banks were married in Ju- neau in September, 1948.
