The Clippers %have been flying the Alaskan skyways for v - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1949 "INTERIM AGREEMENT" OF ALASKA STEAMSHIP IS GIVEN EXPLANATION WiTH CHART BY NET VOYAGE PROFIT ( NACTIVE VESSEL EXPENSES, a7 BROKERAGE AND OTHER VOYAGE EXPENSES — .3 The Alaska Steamship Company recently released cost figures on the “Interim Agreement” operation together with detailed information concerning the elements of the agreement in a report to its agents. Henry Green, lccal company agent commenting on the release said, “Admiral F. A. Zeusler, our executive assistant to the President, clearly presented the reasoning be- hind this release when he said, ‘The problem of Alaska shipping is one of the most frequently discussed su-jects in the Territory. The sub- ject itself is highly complex in na- ture and as a consequence the fact: are often misunderstcod or dis: torted. The result is that Alaskans sometimes find themselves con fused in a maze of various charges = and rumors concerning this prob- | lem which is very close to their| daily life’.” To clarify the profit picture for the period of the Interim Agree- ent the above chart was pre- pared, showing disbursements of the total Interim operating revenue of $13,254,8217, realized from May 1, 1947 through December 31, 1948, The months following the termination date of the Interim Agreement, June 3, 1948, are included those vessel voyages begun before that date, but because of the long- . shore strike, not completed until the end of December. Referring to the report, Green i for ; AGENT HENRY GREEN VESSEL EXPENSES CARGO EXPENSES _ 21.4 Sievedoring, erc.) !said, “Althougn 10 percent profit,| | before taxes, was authorized under| the agreement, we earned but 6.3! | percent.” | “Another point that is not gen-| |erally realized,” he continued, “is |that the Alaska Line is not re- 'ceiving any help from the govern- | ment whatsoever at this time and, hasn't been since the termination of the last voyage under the In-! | terim Agreement. The fact that the | ;Congress passed legislation permit- ting the extension of the agreement (has confused many into thinking| | that it was extended. Actually, the Maritime Commission did not choose to extend the plan, so it s terminated June 30, 1948.” ! “Since that time the Alaska hip Company has not only ed on a strictly ‘private basis,” reen pointed out, “ut has added two aunits to its privately owned fleet—the MS Terminal Knot and | the SS Chief Washakie. Now we | have seven of our own vessels and | cleven chartered vessels serving| Alaska. “With 50 years experience meet- |ing the shipping needs of all the 'Terntury with complete transpor- | tation service—passenger, freight, ; mail, express, refrigeration and | avy equipment-handling facilities | —we lock forward to years of even | greater service to the expanding | needs of a prosperous, pmgressing!‘ Alaska.” 1 SEE MADSEN’S | RADIO LOG K1INY Alaska Broadcasting Co.
